The chill of autumn had settled over Hoenn. Leaves began to discolor and fall from the trees. As this was going on, Thomas was working with Flying-type Pokemon, gathering the leaves towards a compost pile with controlled uses of Gust.

As the disgraced nobleman coordinated these efforts, an Arcanine ran laps around the perimeter of the property. On his back was a pair of Audino. The pink and cream-colored healers cheered as the massive canine raced around the Ranch.

Another Audino, with a longer and fluffier coat of fur than usual, would be the first to hear the sounds of footsteps. Pulse would rush over to the source of the footsteps, intent on making a new friend.

Accompanied by her Zorua, Sierra strolled along the path leading to the approaching ranch. A cloud of uncertainty and anxiety surrounded her, questioning the appropriateness of this impromptu visit to her cousin, Thomas. The last time she had laid eyes on him was during their childhood, and since then, her father had been the conduit for most of the updates on Thomas's life. The situation was intricate, and Sierra harbored disappointment over the decision to ostracize him.[break][break]
Amidst the apparent hustle and bustle, a lone, amiable Audino caught Sierra's attention. Bending down, she greeted the adorable pink Pokémon with a gentle pat and a warm smile, breaking her usual cool expression. "Well, hello there. You wouldn't happen to know Thomas, would you?" Considering the surroundings and the Audino's friendliness, Sierra speculated that this might be one of the Pokémon cared for by Thomas on his ranch.[break][break]

Pulse stared up at the blonde with his innocent blue eyes. As she knelt down to give him a pat on the head, Pulse would cry out happily, hugging her with his stubby little arms. As she asked about Thomas, the Audino nodded, offering to lead the way.

Upon noticing the Zorua, who looked similar to the Zoroark he met while Thomas was hosting the summer camp, the Audino approached the fox. He offered to hug the fluffy creature, and carry them in his arms, while he lead them to his master.

Whether or not the Zorua accepted his offer, Pulse would escort them to Thomas.

When she would catch a glimpse of the man, it was clear a lot had changed. The brown hair she knew from her childhood had been dyed black. Despite this, the lack of cosmetic contact lenses left no mistake of the piercing green eyes he possessed. The once meek boy had grown to be a tall, rugged figure, with a vertical scar going down the left side of his face.

Though she hadn't seen him in years, Thomas had seen her news broadcasts.

"Sierra, that you?", Thomas asked her. Years spent outside of the Kalos Region had diluted his accent. Thomas would offer Pulse a hug, thanking him for escorting the blonde to him.

Upon inquiring about Thomas, Sierra received an affirmative nod from Pulse, who volunteered to lead the way, and gleefully welcomed her pat on the head, replying with a joyful cry and a snug hug. [break][break]

Initially hesitant, Zorua shied away from the Audino, displaying uncertainty and meekness. However, Sierra's reassuring smile and nod encouraged the small fox Pokemon to approach Pulse willingly. As Pulse cradled his small frame, Zorua appeared to relax and started to relish the attention and care bestowed upon him.[break][break]

Sierra's heart skipped a beat as her eyes met Thomas's. The young boy she remembered had transformed into a man before her, unrecognizable yet undeniably him. A mixture of emotions surged within her, and she took a tentative step forward, a desire to embrace him evident in her eyes. However, a wave of uncertainty restrained her, and she found herself squeezing the side of her arm, questioning if he even recalled her as vividly as she remembered him. Would he be upset she was here after all this time? She was here unannounced, after all. There was a haze of anxiety plaguing her in that split second.[break][break]

When Thomas spoke her name, relief and joy flooded her, breaking into a smile. "You were a lot shorter the last time I saw you, Thomas," she teased, prompting Zorua to leap beside Pulse, anticipating a proper hug from Thomas. The ghostly fox, feigning indifference, acted as though they weren't eagerly awaiting their turn for attention.[break][break]
"It's genuinely great to see you doing well." Relief resonated in her words. Over the years, all updates about Thomas had been second-hand, comprising a mix of good and concerning news. Witnessing him thriving in person lifted a weight off her mind.

Though he was ready to accept the shy fox's rejection, the Zorua's trainer's encouragement gave him the chance to hold the fluffy-looking creature. It would be clear that the Audino was delighted by this. The Audino took the time to pet the Hisuian Zorua in his arms, as he escorted Sierra to his master. When the Zorua hopped out of his arms, the Audino gladly took his master's hug, letting out a sweet little cry as he hugged him back.

Thomas could see it in her eyes, despite her hesitation. After offering the Zorua a pet, he'd turn his attention back to his younger cousin. The man would answer her question, opening his arms to embrace her. The smile on his scarred face, the look in his eyes, would tell her that he was happy to see her.

"I'm glad to see you too, Sierra.", he'd tell the journalist.

"Truthfully, it's a mixed bag. But that's life.", he'd tell her. "How have you been?", Thomas asked her.

A Zoroark took notice to the Hisuian Zorua, and went over to investigate. Upon arriving, the head of a Zorua popped out from her long mane, before hopping out to greet his Hisuian counterpart.
