they're waiting for them on the pitch. the last time she'd seen him in lilycove, she'd been drinking ambrosia from his palm. when her cards matched them up, she had expected to feel...something. but instead there was blankness, a giant question mark where her anger used to be.

she still thinks about his red face, burning under the water.

lyune snorts when he spies him, forked tongue slinking out past his scarred maw.

"good to see you out and about, councilman," she says. the both of them had gone through the ringer, but time heals all wounds.

he greets her with a familiar warmth - absent and vapid - and his demeanor means to make her feel unbearable. she keeps on smiling, shifting her gaze from him to the glalie that helped cripple their adversary so that they might turn the tides in their favor.

this isn't like before. she's already proven herself against him. that brief flicker of surprise, the cocking of his brow, is burned into her memory forever. she hoards it like gold.

but that doesn't mean she and lyune won't try to win.

the dragon steps forward and opens up their battle with a blisteringly hot flamethrower.

“BATTLE ROUTINE—”

he barely gets to call out a command before the FLAMETHROWER roasts his words into a bitter crisp. to no surprise, a PROTECT has already manifested, sheltering the pokemon from the attack’s full intensity. early flames lick at their surface but that’s a small price to pay when thrust into spontaneous battle.

“set!”

furrowed eyebrows tear away from the battle to stare at the lump on his sleeve. with a moment of hesitance, he debates giving in but ultimately relents.

“execute!”

with a sleight of hand, he rolls up the sheath to his MEGA STONE. just as his GLALIE fires a short pulse of ICE SHARDS.

flames lick at the edge of the glalie's barrier. steam billows outward and away from the cold-hearted pokemon, but lyune anticipates that. he's already on the move, wings spread and claws scraping the earth in an ascent.

fernando's recovery is quick; ice shards plunge against the salamence's armored belly. frost crawls up to his neck.

she thumbs the tera orb at her hip, but does not call yet. it's won for her in the past, but fernando has no doubt compensated for it and expects her to use it as her ace.

and besides, without so much on the line, she wants to pit their raw power together. so lyune's own mega stone sparks to life. he manages to shake off the frozen shards hindering the worst of his movement as his bones shift. draconic fire cleaves through the pitch, racing towards the ball of ice.

the MEGA EVOLUTION is timed in anticipation of retaliation. it makes them a sitting duck, in most sense, but the transformation helps numb the pain. whatever damage it deals can’t be worse than the contortion of having one’s jaw torn off.

“shinka!”

the white glow of its transformation clashes against the color of the SALAMENCE’s flames. when it dissipates, dragon fire is still smoldering against the white lines of frost across its rocky surface. the GLALIE screams, but whether its in defiance or pain remains to be seen.

from the pits of it’s abyss-like throat, comes a full-fledged BLIZZARD.

they've weathered the frozen over hellscape of kyurem's realm. anything fernando's glalie can throw at them has nothing on what they've endured. and besides, when the transformation comes upon him, lyune tucks his legs into his pauldrons and mimics the move fernando has mastered.

he's always loved his metas, this one.

the glass dome surrounding him shatters and waves of ice still bombard him. he summons another torrent of flames to wash over the pokemon.

AN EXCHANGE OF SWORDS AND SHIELDS draw the battle long. even exchanges like these are suitable for those who’ve deployed to the field. for wars are fought over time and through attrition. ones where external factors such as troops and reinforcements dictate more than what one trainer ever could.

this time, the pokemon does not stay its hand to attack at a distance. the fact its opponent wields fire puts them at a distinct disadvantage. therefore, they must push to decide it in a decisive maneuver. who can better execute their win condition.

it lunges forward, mouth agape, ready to CRUNCH.

they have to get near to bring the worst of the heat and so the glalie's unhinged jaw, swallowing embers as it goes, manages to grab onto lyune's foreleg. he bellows as pain lances down his side, ice crawling up his veins, and he ducks his wings in.

bright green flames lick at his sides. while the glalie holds on like a rabid dog, he flares his wings back open and soars upward with dragon ascent.

PROXIMITY ALONE IS ENOUGH to burn the GLALIE in draconic energies. but that does not stop the pokemon from going all in. sharp teeth latch into place as it starts to flash freeze itself with SHEER COLD. a slow and meticulous technique, but one that excels in close, constant quarters.

the glalie's teeth sink in without mercy. no matter how intense the fire that burns away from him, he cannot shake the tenacious creature loose. the screech of pain, followed by his desperate careen back to the earth, makes freya rip his pokeball back from her choker.

but she does not withdraw him. she would not do that disservice to him.

more angry, sputtering flames fan his descent, blistering against the pitch as he slams his side - and the glalie - onto the battlefield. his sides heave and he winces at the ice in his veins, limbs seizing.

dark eyes stare daggers at the trainer responsible for felling him as he's frozen solid.

the rest of her losses, she had handled with dignity, but this one makes her blood curdle. she withdraws him with a snap of her wrist and her patient, congratulatory tone is forced.

"match to you, councilman."
