After concealing a bunch of weapons, he was ready to go.

Well, almost.

He still needed to make sure he had everything in his pack. Anything that could help in a place as dangerous as Area Zero.

Everything he needed was in his bag, including his mask in case they had to deal with any leaguers. One could never be too sure when they had to deal with leaguers. In his book, it was better to be safe than sorry. For now, though, the mask would stay off.

After strapping his swords and his backpack to his back, he was ready to go. Now all there was to do was meet up with his partner for the excursion.

Leaving the base behind, he would head to the start of the Silent Icelands, which was the scheduled meeting point, on the back of his Charizard.

"Ready to head out?" he would ask once he saw his partner.

[attr="class","kazu2"]The biting winds drew a shiver down Kazuya’s spine. A hand lifted to adjust his designer scarf, his Emolga tucking herself beneath the excess fabric. Though he’d been out of the region for some time, his subtropical blood never adapted to the cold. Even with the boots and thick jacket, it was impossible not to beleaguer the chill.

A solemn nod greeted Ryker on his arrival. The Bewear behind Kazuya—wearing a similar scarf—flashed a subdued, toothy smile. “Yes.” In response to the order, Kazuya started forward. “Let's go.” The device at his side chirped, a strange mixture of robotic and human. Though lacking a flying type Pokemon—few could hold someone of his size—the grunt did not seem too perturbed by the run across the icy wasteland. However, deep inside, he wished for a hot chocolate.

Shivering like a leaf, Misa buried herself in his hair—it smelled like flowers and berries. The Bewear, meanwhile, lopped along a dozen or so yards behind. His awkward, shuffling walk was more gawky than intimidating.

As they approached the chasm, the Kindler paused at its edge. Beneath his scarf, his lips pressed into a thoughtful expression. Echoing through the chasm’s entrance, sounds of battle could be heard. “Be ready.”[break][break]

Having lived in a desert environment where the weather could fluctuate from hot during the day to cold at night for a good part of his life, the cold didn't really bother him. Even the wind that seemed to go right through him didn't bother him. He was dressed considerably less prepared for the cold than the older male, simply wearing a down jacket over a pair of jeans and boots.

Upon arrival, his gaze would immediately scan the area for potential threats before he gave a curt nod of his own, ready to start when he heard that the older male was ready.
[break][break]
Hearing the comment, he turned his head towards the white-haired man. "I'm prepared for anything," he said in response before they started descending into the chasm. Luckily, with Apollo still out of his pokeball, they still had a bit of light as they ventured through the chasm. However even with Apollo light the way it was a bit hard to see which was why he failed to notice the Spinarak until it ended up on him. Feeling something crawling around on him he batted it off knocking the Spinarak onto the ground where it immediately began to scurry away. Seeing Apollo about ready to go after it he head up a hand to halt the Charizard. “Leave it, it’s not causing any harm,” he told the fire pokemon watching as the Spinarak scurried out of sight.

After that silence lapsed between them again and the only sound to be heard was their footsteps. Eventually, though, they would reach the research station.[break] Kazuya Yoshida

[attr="class","kazu2"]The older man flashed a nostalgic smile. Not that long ago, he would have said the same. But he hadn’t been. Not by a long shot. “That is a lofty assertion,” Kazuya’s voice modulator cautioned the younger man. But he did not offer any other form of correction. Some lessons were best learned through pain. Content to follow, the mercenary trailed a yard or two behind Ryker. His Bewear, meanwhile, took point—occasionally circling back to hop excitedly in front of them. [break][break]

At the Spnarak’s intrusion, Kazuya couldn’t stop a snort. Though amused, he did stiffen as the Charizard turned its ire upon the bug. Muscular hands curled into fists as the dragon shifted, Dancing ahead—seemingly unbothered by the dim lighting—Natsu did not notice the tension. Fortunately, Ryker’s call to stand down was heeded. “Mm.” The mercenary’s steps stalled as he lifted his eyes to ensure the arachnid made it safely into the canopy above.[break][break]

As they pushed through the final hurdle, Kazuya found himself boxed in on all sides. Two stone walls squeezed him tight as he tried to will his frame through the small tunnel. Rough rock scraped muscular arms as his mask was pushed up his nose. Normally calm breaths turned frantic as the world turned black. Suddenly, this was not a chasm but a cell--one where he could never fully stand or stretch out. “Nngh!” With a gasp, a plate-sized hand managed to find the edge of the tunnel.[break][break]

With a heave, the mercenary pulled himself from his claustrophobic nightmare. As he caught his breath, Kazuya locked his eyes on the research station. His face ran with fear and sweat. His mask was still twisted off to one side, as if someone had snapped the neck of the Shiftry it portrayed. Gold eyes flicked up to the station before them. “It’s quiet.” Kazuya finally managed to gasp between clenched teeth.. Too quiet. [break]

Was it really? He didn't really see it that way. To him, it was just the fact of the matter. Unless he was talking about something else. Though whatever that could be, he had no idea.

Deciding not to think too much about it, he just shrugged, his expression remaining impassive, making it unclear what he really thought. Or how he felt, not that he ever really felt anything.

While the others' Pokémon didn't seem to notice his reaction, Ryker did. Having trained to be observant, he noticed the little things. So he noticed him tensing as Apollo reacted negatively to the Spinarak's presence. A tension that dissipated after Apollo stood down after being told to do that.

"Apollo is really protective of me and sometimes goes overboard with seeing stuff as a threat," he told the older male.

Not really expecting much of a response, he continued on. Unfortunately, the path ahead narrowed, making it hard to get through. With his frame, he wasn't exactly made for getting through tight spaces.

From behind him, he heard the older male's breathing quicken, and he was reminded of the excursion he had done with Dorian, who had seemed to have a similar reaction when down here.

Unlike last time, he didn't bring attention to it though. Instead, he continued walking as the path opened back up.

"Keep your guard up," was his only response as his amber gaze scanned their surroundings for the lookout of any threat.

It was while he was doing this that he caught the sound of a cry. The same cry he had heard when down here with Dorian.[break] Kazuya Yoshida

He knows he is the same with his daughters. “It means he cares.” The device at his side broadcasts as the white-haired man smiles to himself. Though inconvenient, such behavior could be harnessed in a way that made it useful. That urge to protect was far more motivating than blows and stones to many. Feeling a bit left out by the conversation—wondering if hs lack of reaction means he doesn’t care—Natsu turns to give the Joltik a parting glare.

Kazuya shakes his head and laughs. Or, at least, his mouth opens as if to do so. The bear’s youth and inexperience are charming in many ways. Though the same cannot be said of battle. This moment of levity makes his crossing a modicum easier. A reminder that light still existed in tight, dark places such as these. As he catches his breath, golden eyes lift to meet Ryker’s gaze. His hands still shake like leaves in a storm.

This young man had a stick up his as, and it’s not the fun kind. The soft smile he tosses Ryker’s way is humoring. One punctuated by a failed attempt to lick his lips. That is an easy to conclusion to reach. “I plan to.” The sound of a distant cry draws up a brow. But any wondering ends as his Bewear stiffens beside him. “Natsu?” A few pebbles skitter from somewhere above, shards of crystals brushing the ground.

“Move!” Kazuya shouts as he shoves Ryker out of the way just as somethign far bigger and darker than a Joltik drops on them from above.

He wasn't really sure what to say to something like that. Having someone care about him was just strange. Sure, there had been his old mentor who had taken him under his wing. But the older male had always told him it was just business, and outside of training, he had mostly left him to his own devices.

Not knowing what to say, he simply nodded. It was unclear what he thought on the matter, which was unsurprising considering his default expression could be considered impassive.

Unsure what to make of his next reaction, he decided to just not acknowledge it. They had a job to do anyway. It was probably best they got done with their task sooner rather than later.

Silence lapsed between them for a while. Well, not really silence, but there was no talking between them. Surprisingly, it would be Ryker who spoke up, choosing to only give some advice, if it can even be called that.

As the older male promised he would stay on guard, he simply nodded, not bothering with a response since he was busy keeping an eye on their surroundings. A noise from above made him tense, but before he could react, the other male shoved into him.

Being a few inches shorter than the other meant he wasn't moved much, but it did give him the initiative to jump further out of the way to avoid what was dropping down from the ceiling. His hand immediately went to the hilt of one of the knives that he always kept on his person when it came to doing stuff like this.[break] Kazuya Yoshida

[attr="class","kazu2"]The silence is comfortable. It is not like the maddening, bone-crushing void of solitary. Around him there is life. A Zubat flitting between crystal formations above. The steady breathing of the assassin beside him. And, of course, the antics of Natsu as he stumbles through the cavern. His thoughts are mostly taken up by the alien landscape around him.

Fortunately, the group scattered before the thing could crush them beneath its feet. As the dust cleared, the air around them crackled with ozone. It glimmered silver—gold accents standing out in this land of crystals. The Metagross’s arms were disconnected from its main body. These floating appendages provided it a swarm with which to hold its position. In the distance, you could make out the research camp beyond it. Intelligent eyes stared down the assortment of people before it.

“Hold.” A device on it buzzed. The Metagross’s mouth closed with an annoyed snap. It didn’t trust these interlopers. They did not wear insignia, and they smelt of sweat and dirt, not the camp behind him. Though the people before it were masked, the trainer knew many on their side were the same. Beyond it, one could see the boundaries of a camp. The man behind the speaker spoke again, obviously reluctant to attack unprovoked. “State your business.” The tension could be cut with a knife. Kazuya swept an arm back toward Natsu.

The bear was ready to pounce. But, when asked, he drew up short. Would Ryker do the same?

Mentally cursing himself for allowing someone to catch him off guard, he waited for the dust to settle. Once it did, he found himself face to face with a Metagross, its arms being the obstacle he had to avoid. Not that it mattered. An enemy was still an enemy.

Before he could react to the near miss, a voice calling out to them drew their attention. His focus immediately shifted from the Metagross to what lay beyond it. Just their luck, it was a research camp and everyone was on high alert. The possibility of this escalating into a major fight was high, even if the opposing side seemed hesitant to initiate anything.

Seeing his partner stand down, he motioned for Apollo to do the same. It seemed like they were playing the long game. He could work with that, although he wasn't sure how long it would last.
[break][break]
"We're researchers conducting a study on the Giant Chasm and possibly Area Zero in the future," he said, keeping his tone completely neutral. It wasn't difficult for him to do so, as he didn't fully grasp emotions. Another advantage was that it made him an exceptionally skilled liar, although he hadn't necessarily lied; he had simply omitted some details, such as their affiliations.

To these people, they could easily pass as fellow leaguers who were intrigued by the concept of Area Zero and its surrounding areas.[break] Kazuya Yoshida

A deep breath returns the mercenary to his center. For once, Ryker is the first to speak. His words are neutral without any hint of malice. We do not look like scientists. The Metagross seems unconvinced. Its golden eyes narrow as it lets loose a noise of frustration.

Keep talking, friend. A hand reaches up to the scarf around his neck. He lowers it slightly, revealing a nasty scar. Though he doesn’t call attention to it, the opposing trainer catches it. Though Kazuya can’t read minds, the cannon fodder likely assumes where it came from.

Some nasty terrorist who tried to slit his throat. Heh. If only he knew.

He was well aware of the fact that they didn't look like scientists. And it just wasn't because they weren't scientists either. For Ryker, some might say he looked too much like a bodyguard or something like that. But one should always go into a situation with the mindset that looks could be misleading. That was one of the lessons his mentor had gone over on multiple occasions.

Though he sensed movement behind him, he didn't take his eyes off the people in front of him. Especially not the Metagross that seemed the most suspicious of them. He had had it drilled into him to never turn his back on a potential enemy.

Whatever the other person did seemed to work as the person questioning them hung back and motioned for the Metagross to stand down. His unblinking gaze remained fixed on the Metagross as it stepped down until the guy from before brought his attention back to him with his question.

Nodding, he took out some papers. While not what one would call book smart, he was smart about stuff like this. While usually he killed and was done with it, sometimes a job took more effort than that. Sometimes a job required him to get close to the target to get to know the kind of person they were before inevitably killing them.

Such jobs required him to pass as someone else. So he always had papers on hand that would help him pass as someone else if he needed to. And when it came to such things, he was thorough. After turning another two pages, he handed it back to Ryker. It was pretty obvious he didn’t know what to look for. “Thanks, Mister Swallow. Everything seems to be in order.” The gloved hands reached out to Kazuya. Like his companion, he had false documentation.[break][break]

That didn’t stop him from holding his breath. To him, this stuff was as convincing as a fake ID. After another faux check, the young man set those back in the grunt’s hands. Kazuya grunted his thanks. “You two sould be all set. Let me call ahead.” Then, the young man made the mistake of turning around. Like a viper, Kazuya struck. He grabbed the Pokeball at his belt to return the Metagross (the guy had been nice enough to label it). [break][break]

An arm then wrapped around his throat until the kid lost consciousness. The young man’s fighting didn’t have much effect. Kazuya was more wall than man. After a few kicks, he felt the man go limp. He’d wake up fine later. But there wasn’t much point in accompanying him to HQ.

Gently lowering him to the ground, Kazuya nodded up the path. “Let’s go.”

As the guy looked through his paperwork, he kept an eye on him. Having grown up the way he had, trust didn't come easily to him. But unless someone really knew him, they wouldn't know it. His inability to truly feel emotions made sure of that.

As the other handed his papers back to him, he simply inclined his head but otherwise didn't say anything. Instead, he chose to watch in silence as the guy looked through his partner's documents.

From the way he looked through both, it was clear he didn't know what to look for. Something that was good for them but not good for the opposing side. It didn't help that the guy didn't seem overly bright. Seriously, labeling your pokeballs? He was just asking Rocket to steal them.

"It probably won't be too much further," he said as he resumed walking, his gaze scanning the area around them. Occasionally, Kazuya throws a glance back over his shoulder to Ryker. It is unnerving that the guy’s face never changes. It’s like a statue. “Looks that way.” Then, the path ends. Below the League officials look like ants.

The center of the camp seems to be drawing their attention. Rising above the tent is a multi-colored rock. It looked like everything else he’d seen down here, but he’d guess it was pretty special. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have wrapped it in a fence.

Natsu pops his claws into place. His needle-sharp teeth drop into place as he prepares to drop down on the unsuspecting trainers. It reminds him of his daughter’s recent obsession with Drop Komalas. A hand lifts to his belt, ready to pull another ball. “Ready when you are.”
