Callan slipped through the double sliding doors into the Top Champion’s battle chambers. The design was minimal, a simple battlefield, a screen, a throne on the other side with an accompaniment of various arcade games lining the trim of the stadium.

The screen flashes, registering the entrance of the former Elite Four trainer. A portrait of grey locks and red eyes, accompanied by his team of choice lines underneath his ghostly complexion.

“Kyle, hi.” Callan begins, his voice cleaner than its previous smoke infested rasp. “I feel like perhaps the changes we’ve made to the system might have unintentionally made your workload.”

"i was wondering when you'll take your turn," kyle greets in a more carefree tone. "matias and melody already got their turn."

he gets up from his seat, lighting up a screen overhead with their pokemon of choice. callan may not use normal-types exclusively, but it is what he was grown to be known for during his stay as a gym leader.

kyle decides to use it as his theme for this match.

"i was never the best when it came to ruled matches anyways, so i guess the changes just made sure i kept the seat." he wasn't married to the title, but some things were better if he was not to leave it. "but i have to say that things somehow got more lenient thanks to it."

he sighs. it's a consequence that escaped him during the planning phases, but whether that was a good thing or not was left up to interpretation. kyle was supposed to be the lenient one, and he isn't sure how to feel about the entire operation slowly fitting to his preferences.

the top champion then releases two pokemon: a dunsparce and an oranguru.

"anyways, let's get started."

Callan pauses as Kyle mentions that he may have missed the lenience having increased. "I don't know," Callan begins, "If it motivates people to foster a desire for Pokemon Battling, I don't think it can be considered a consequence. Though... maybe it can be on your end."

His eyes watch as Kyle's screen shows his Pokemon team. Callan had not anticipated that Kyle would have used a thematic change for his own Pokemon. "Lets go."

As Lyselle is summoned onto the stage, a Psychic Terrain is set, enveloping the blank canvas of the stage in an eerie aura. "SWORDS DANCE, CALM MIND." Swords flicker, encircling the Cinderace, as its typing swaps to the Normal Type, whereas Lyselle seemingly appears unchanged, though her power would increase.

"I regret not having enough time to talk with you in the past." Callan states, as they begin the initial stages of their battle. "Can I ask about your opinion on the League, and AQUA, as a whole?"

Trainer Callan wants to battle.

the initial move from his opening would be expected, but decisions sway him from the optimal to what would give the best show.

"rock slide, dunsparce. instruct, oranguru."

rock fall from the dunsparce's serene grace. the oranguru makes sure that the dunsparce works twice, further covering both of the opposing party with more rocks.

callan's question comes up as a surprise, though kyle wouldn't say it was out of character for the challenger. he just didn't expect for him to be on the receiving end of an impromptu interrogation.

"i'm employed by the league. don't you think that would skew my answer a bit?"

unlike most people, he wasn't enticed by his own sense of justice or vainglory. he was here through a series of promotions that promised him security in his future, like what most people's jobs do.
