orion has never liked cities. the bigger the city, the more people it housed, and he was constantly telling himself that he did not want to be around people. that he likes to be alone. so he sticks to the outskirts of slateport like he's some kind of criminal slinking in the shadows, the absol at his side not helping the image. people didn't trust them, and they didn't trust him.

it's getting late, skies dark and stars bright. it's peaceful, like this. he's almost at ease.

"we'll head home soon, he promises the absol as orion himself shivers against the night's chill. he hadn't intended to stay out so long. "i just want to see if anything might be out here, first."

The smell hits him before he sees it. It's thick and cloying, choking, and Orion brings a hand up to shield his nose from the worst of it as he squints in the pale moonlight. "Absol, do you see—?"

He breaks off as a gout of flame erupts from somewhere in the darkness, half-blinding Orion in the sudden burst of light and singing the Absol who had just lifted his nose to sniff at the air. Absol makes a noise that might be pain or irritation, bracing itself against the Poison-type's FLAMETHROWER.

Orion blinks, stunned, then moves into action.

There it is! A Skuntank, of all things — that explained the smell, at least — and it's advancing upon the duo with clear intent. Orion's always wanted one of these. "Absol, PSYCHO CUT!" True to the command, the Absol shakes itself off in spite of singed fur and launches toward the Skuntank. Purple energy glows around its claws as it makes contact with the Pokemon and Ori winces, wondering if it might faint, wondering if he'd made the wrong call —

— but Skuntank endures the hit, snarling.

"Right." A pokeball in his hand grows in size as he retrieves it from his pocket, and he chucks it underhanded toward the Pokemon.
