It's not often he ventures from his lab.

Gavin blinks the sun from his eyes and scowls at the seemingly empty expanse of Route 102. Rural as the area was in comparison to somewhere like Slateport or Lilycove, he knew there was still a strong possibility that his hunt would be interrupted by errant wanderers.

He was prepared, just in case.

Lucario is released from its spherical prison in a flash of light and a three-point landing, the bipedal canine straightening and turning to its trainer with a questioning look.

"Is there anyone around?" Aurus cocks his head, ears twitching. He nods, and Gavin gives him an appraising look. "Well done. Keep an ear out for Pokemon, as well. We'll start over here."

Something like a chill crept up Monty's spine, clawing its way up. Like a cold heat rising. It was his Chandelure, using ghostly small wiles and ways to warn him that they were no longer alone. It wasn't as if she could sense auras or the like, but being able to suck away life forces does give her type of Pokemon a sort of heads up when dinner might've arrived.[break][break]

"We'll be okay." Monty tried to tell, maybe just himself, as he continued forward. "I'm sure they won't mind a little company-- or perhaps we should ask if they want the route to themselves." They were, after all, just passing through.[break][break]

Coming from around a gathering of trees, Monty lifted a hand in a friendly wave. "Don't be startled, but you aren't alone." His dual fire/ghost type came bobbing behind him. "But don't mind us, we're just looking for new types of Pokémon."[break][break]

He'd heard rumors the region was going to have some released into the environments. His theory? They'd already been released and they were laying low until they got comfortable with their new home.

looking for first-stage evolutions. (figure we can mod req after your next post, or you can req now! just wanted to interact/respond first!)

Aurus taps him on the shoulder and points silently toward a nearby copse of trees. Gavin understands the meaning without having to ask.

He turns to the duo and cants his head. A Chandelure. Fascinating. His eyes linger on the Pokemon with undisguised interest before they flick back to the trainer. "From Galar?" he guesses. "They are of my interest as well, but you're welcome to first pick." He waves a dismissive hand. "We won't intrude."

He gestures to his Lucario, who's wandered off to scout the area as previously directed, then to the skies above. A dark, distant shape circles their location on four wings. "One of mine."

"Yes, Galarians." They honestly sounded like a type of alien, but, who was he to judge. @monty, that's who. Just call him Captain Judgmental.[break][break]

The shadow overhead did catch his attention, causing him to raise his head up and watch as the Crobat glided about. The blonde's words had Monty feeling a bit safer. He appreciated the heads up and said as much with a smile and an introduction.[break][break]

"A beautiful Crobat. I'm Monty, this is Gala." He pointed toward his Chandelure, who gave a light chime of a hum toward the individual as if to say hello.

His lip twitches. Yes, Chiro was a fantastic specimen. He'd raised him from a tiny, near-useless Zubat into the powerful force he was today. His first Pokemon, his favourite.

He nods to Gala. "Patrick," he lies, easily; it's the name he uses when he's not among his Rocket cohorts. Monty could well be a Rocket, but Gavin would sooner be safe than sorry.

His attention is drawn away from the duo by a pair of Pokemon that interrupt the conversation. A timeless duo, predator and prey, the impressive bunch of the Persian's muscles a sight to behold. He watches impassively and considers an intervention, but decides against it.

Not what he was looking for.

The duo in the brush is definitely a timeless one indeed. Monty didn't notice that fact, though. He's too shallow to notice something like that. Instead, he immediately frowns at the ugly sights before him. That Persian wasn't the sleek Kanto native, it was the disgusting Alolan form and it mad Monty shiver just thinking about looking at that inflated head any longer, regardless of the sapphire on its forehead.[break][break]

Don't even get him started on the fugly bird.[break][break]

In an effort to stop his negative thoughts, he looks to his newest interest-- Patrick, was it?[break][break]

"Not a fan of ugly or fugly either?" While his words might have seemed vulgar, his tone set off the vulgarity by sounding a bit sweeter than one would when calling things disgusting. He was very good at delivering his verbal blows as gracefully as possible-- when he deemed it necessary.

Gavin huffs in amusement at the comment. "They're simply not what I'm looking for. Persian's potential has been met and that... thing," he says dispassionately, sparing the Vullaby a withering glance, "is prey."

He's not looking for prey. He needs Pokemon with potential, with promise; he wants something he can raise to be as powerful as the Lucario that leaps from the shadows with EXTREME SPEED to dispatch the offending bird.

"Hm. This, on the other hand..." He eyes the Turtwig thoughtfully, then whistles for Chiro. The Crobat makes another loop overhead before diving toward toward the indicated target, four wings pressed tight against its form. They flare out just before it reaches the ground, and Chiro sinks POISONOUS FANGS into the turtle's exposed neck. The poor thing didn't stand a chance. It tries to recover from the assault with SYNTHESIS, but the GIGA DRAIN it follows with has almost no effect on Gavin's dual-type.

Gavin pulls out a Pokeball and taps the turtle's shell with it, watching as it disappeared into the red light. The ball shakes in his grip.

"... this has potential."

Monty can understand the need for something with potential. Something to be strong from the get-go, not weak. It's not as if Monty is against the work. He had a Litwick for crying out loud, and Gala turned into a powerful Chandelure that he wouldn't change for the world. But he did understand that certain Pokemon were simply just bred for greatness. And Patrick seemed to have his eye out for them.[break][break]

The Carnivine was promptly ignored like it didn't even exist. It's hovering form lurking about in the woods. Well, Monty decided it could stay there, and it seemed Gala wanted to make sure the Carnivine knew he was serious, seeing as how she positioned herself between Monty and the wild Pokemon. It seemed to have no interest in being burned alive and turned away to lurk int he shadows.[break][break]

"I can understand that. I never once thought I would have a Claydol by my side, until that Baltoy proved itself. Even nicknamed it after that." That took effort for Monty. He didn't much like naming things unless he thought the names that they were given were dumb. Like, turtwig, for instance.

Gavin casts Monty an appraising look, the corner of his mouth twisting into a smile. It's an odd look on the rather severe man, and it doesn't reach his eyes.

"They earn their names," he says, nodding as he watches Chiro take flight once more. The Pokeball in his hand shakes once more, then stills. He glances down at it, then clips it to his belt. "Once their potential has been met."

He has never been cruel to his Pokemon. That he has managed to raise a Crobat and Lucario, species notorious for requiring loyalty to their trainer in order to reach their evolutionary potential, spoke volumes. But it took a long time for them to earn his respect. Turtwig would get there, one day... or it wouldn't, and Gavin would find another place for it. Time would tell.

He gives an impassive glance to the two Pokemon that had approached in the aftermath of action, then looks away.

The way that Patrick seemed to dismiss the new pokemon that made themselves known surprised Monty. Steenee was a decent Pokemon, and they weren't an eyesore. It seemed as if they were curious. Curious enough to battle. Steenee took a stance against Gala, letting off an aromatic mist, raising her special defense knowingly. She could feel the haunting heat coming from the Chandelure.[break][break]

"Challenge accepted." Monty knew it wouldn't be much of a challenge, though. "Make quick work." His words bubbled out, a bit giddy, as he began rummaging in his overly sized backpack for a pokeball that would match the beautiful creature. Though it had little green, he felt the heal ball might do the trick. Though when it evolved into a Tsareena, there was a considerable amount of green. Hm. Yes, a Nest Ball would do much better.[break][break]

As Monty decided on which pokeball to use, Gala got to work doing as she was told. The flames of her candelabras began growing, and suddenly an inferno of fire burned toward the Steenee. She waited for the fire to hit her, barely having breath and trying to ignore the burns on her as she barely managed herself an attack, magical leaf.[break][break]

Steenee was weak enough, so Monty tossed out the nest ball and watched as the ball hit the ground, the circle going from red to white as the moment of truth passed.[break][break]
