Orion thinks of the Safari Zone as sort of like taking a vacation. It's beautiful here, and quite peaceful, and there's something to be said about spending time with his first partner without any of the others around. Even Delphi had been left at home to rest, still exhausted after one of the more harrowing route-runs.

He shivers in the autumn breeze.

"It's quiet so far," he muses, half to himself and half to the Absol padding at his side. "Nice, though. Even if we don't find anything, it'll be worth the—" He cuts himself off as Katas suddenly halts, cocking his head. He looks more ponderous than alarmed, and Orion lets out the breath he'd sucked in. "You hear something?"

Katas points with his horn, and Orion chuckles as he starts off in the indicated direction. Well, they had a purpose now, at least!

Following his Absol deeper into the safari, Orion's boots begin to squelch in ever-deepening mud, and he has to stop at one point to dislodge his left foot from the jaws of its suction. It's a miserable trek, but he trusts that Katas knows what he's doing. The Absol appears to be having far less trouble than the Ranger, his paws leaving mere indents in the mud where Orion left a trail of boot-shaped holes behind him.

When Katas stops, Orion follows the point of his horn, and understands immediately why his partner had led him here.

"Ohh," he breathes, voice soft with awe. "I've always wanted one..."

For its part, the Mudkip doesn't appear to have noticed the pair. He appears — and Orion notices this with amusement — to be attempting to skip rocks across a muddy pond. He's not very good at it, but the ranger can't fault the little guy for trying. He watches the amphibious Pokemon with a quiet, vested interest, then startles as the tiny thing lets out an impressive HYDRO PUMP toward an offending rock.

He laughs, and the sound startles the Mudkip.

"Oh, no, wait—"

He's too late. It dives into the water with significant speed and swims away before Orion can react, quickly disappearing further into the swampy terrain. When he makes to follow, he finds that his boots have sunk deep into the mud from all the standing around, and he has to take a moment to free himself from the environment.

"Better luck next time, I guess..."

He's still struggling to free his left foot from the mud when the Druddigon appears with a roar terrifying enough to shake even Orion's steely composure. He looks up with widened eyes to see the creature diving toward him on jagged wings.

"Shit — Katas!"

The Absol snarls and leaps between predator and prey with a DETECT, the Druddigon's jaws closing around the Absol's horn instead of the arm that Orion had thrown up to protect himself. It responds with a snarl and a swipe of its claws, which Katas dodges with QUICK ATTACK.

Orion, heart pounding, finally manages to free his boot and stumble back onto the path.

"Don't fight it!" he orders. "Just run!"

He doesn't know what those things can do, and he doesn't want to find out. Trainer and Pokemon dash into a thick copse of trees, weaving around trunks and hoping to lose the dragon-type. At very least, it wouldn't be able to comfortably fly in here, which would give them an edge.

SHINY. GET.

He's not sure how long they've been running when he stumbles to a halt, leaning against the trunk of the nearest tree for support and panting heavily. His heart is fluttering like a caged bird and his hair is plastered to his forehead with sweat, but he's safe.

"I don't," he gasps between ragged breaths, "hear it any more, Katas. I think... we're good."

As he regains his composure, Orion kneels next to his Absol and checks him over for any sign of injury. Katas grumbles his annoyance — he hates being fussed over like this — but submits to his trainer's mothering when it's clear he won't let up. While the Absol's breathing has quickened from the run, he appears to have escaped the encounter with the Druddigon unscathed, and Orion straightens up with a relieved sigh.

And then yelps in surprise, because there's a Zubat hanging upside down mere inches from his face. And it's green.

He's not sure if it's sick or if this is one of those rare-coloured Pokemon, but he's quick to fumble a Safari Ball in its direction whatever the case. If it was sick, he'd take care of it, and if not—

—if not, he was lucky. Imagine that!

Orion's still riding the high from his successful capture when he hears rustling in the undergrowth, turning to see a Scraggy picking its way through the brush. Katas seems unsettled by its presence, claws flexing in the mud, but Orion is unperturbed.

"Hey little guy," he says cheerfully enough. "Don't mind us, we're just — woah!"

Upon making eye contact with the Pokemon, it suddenly rushes toward him. Orion rears back in surprise, but not in time to avoid getting a ZEN HEADBUTT straight to the shin. It hurts, and stars dance before his eyes as he stumbles into a crouch and clutches at his shin. He can hear Katas growling, thinks he might be fighting the other Pokemon or else telling it where to shove it's attitude, but he's got his eyes closed as he waits for the blinding pain to fade.

"Jeez," he breathes, rubbing at the sore spot on his leg. He opens his eyes to see Katas watching him carefully and no sign of the Scraggy. "Little guy had attitude problems, huh?"

capture attempt on sentret!

"... is there something in the water, here? The air? Are we going to start changing colours, soon?"

Orion fields this mostly rhetorical question toward his Absol — he's still black-and-white and looking perfectly normal — before turning his attention back to the Sentret he'd begun to watch. It was a cute little thing with berries stuffed in its cheeks and paws coated in Oran juice. It's also an odd colour, a little lighter than any Sentret he'd seen before. He's pretty sure they're supposed to be brown, and this one is... blonde, he supposes?

He makes a soft clucking noise to get its attention, smiles at it when it goes stiff with alarm and drops the berry it had clutched in its paws.

"Aw, don't worry," he soothes. "We're no threat, little guy. Girl? I guess you can't tell me, huh." He pulls a berry out of his bag and holds it out. He can tell the Sentret is intrigued, and holds his hand steady as he waits. "There's more where that came from."

When he's pretty sure the Sentret is content, sitting at his feet and growing fat on Orion's supply of snacks, he plucks one of the Safari balls he'd been given from his pocket and taps the little Pokemon on the head.

Orion wrinkles his nose as a sudden stench begins to fill the air. It's bad enough that he's got to pull his shirt up over his nose, eyes watering. Had one of those berries he'd pulled out been rotten, and he just hadn't noticed? Hopefully he hadn't given any bad ones to the poor Sentret he'd just captured, if that were the case. It would never trust him!

It's when he's looking around for rotten berries that he spots the real culprit: a Trubbish. He might have mistaken it for someone's litter they'd tossed if not for the fact that it was moving.

And, god, he was willing to give any Pokemon a chance to prove its worth, but he only had one Safari Ball left and that smell was really starting to get to him. Not wanting to offend the Pokemon by making a verbal exclamation, the ranger taps his Absol and gestures with his head toward a new direction. Katas doesn't need to be told twice — his enhanced sense of smell must really be struggling — and it's not long before the duo are clear of the forest and out in the open air.

Orion's just happy to breathe again.
