So his Ranger friend had tipped him off about something, and all the local sheep farmers were suddenly taking in an influx of this white-fluffy thing called a ‘Wooloo’, effectively wiping out and replacing all the Mareep he knew that they used to herd.[break][break]

He could only guess as to why this was the case. Mareep wool, while obviously resistant to electricity, left a tingly sensation when worn for too long. No wonder they were almost driven out and replaced in droves by Wooloo. The moment he’d seen the picture that said Ranger contact had sent him…[break][break]

…the reason was obvious.[break][break]

They were so fluffy, so perfectly round, so adorable… he wanted one. Badly. Like right now.[break][break]

Thankfully the influx of Wooloo had also meant… an influx of work. Unscrupulous characters suddenly rising in numbers and activity, all out to get their hands on this prized thing from the outside, a faraway region known as “Galar”. Even further than Unova, apparently.[break][break]

So here he was, all the way in one of the backwards little farms surrounding Littleroot, ready to fend off any attackers that would even dare come and try attack. Of course, they said he wasn’t going to be alone, so where was his companion for the day?[break][break]

Little did he know he was going to run into a familiar face…

There was a whole lot of excitement surrounding the introduction of the new Galarian species and variants into Hoenn, and even a newcomer to the region such as Florian would have to have been blind and deaf to miss it.

As a professor, he was interested in any new species; as a fairy-type expert, he was especially excited to hear of additions to his favourite type.
[break]
[break]

The job comes to him in the form of a notice board calling for rangers and eager trainers alike to help defend these new arrivals from potential threats. He's never fancied himself as much of a trainer, more of an explorer, but the thought of any Pokemon coming to harm upsets the Kalosian enough that he decides to volunteer. It couldn't hurt!

He arrives to the farm with his own Pokemon in tow — Joli prancing at Florian's side, Jonquille painstakingly threading her newest flower, Abeille flitting around the Comfey.

[break]

They spot a familiar face, and Florian's features split into a broad grin as he lifts his hand in greeting. "'Allo!"
Abeille abandons the Comfey to go buzz around Alexei in greeting, the Cutiefly remembering the man responsible for her rescue. "They told me that I would have company, but I did not think it would be you! It is good to see you again, Alexei!"

It doesn’t take too long for the tiniest of feather-light touches to make a beeline right for his nose as he risks getting cross-eyed to see that another Cutiefly had taken up residence on the exact same spot where Carina had previously.[break][break]

“I had to see them. The Wooloo. Look at them!” he began excitedly, gesturing to the fields behind him.[break][break]

“Mareep wool has a perpetual case of static electricity, no wonder they were replaced with Wooloo. Look at them! They’re so fluffy,” Alexei continued to gush.[break][break]

Oh, boy. He knew that if his Lucario were around, the dual-type would do his best impression of a face palm gesture in Alexei’s direction.[break][break]

“Are you here for the Wooloo, too?” he asked Florian a few moments later. Arceus, Alexei was acting like a big kid.[break][break]

But it couldn’t be helped because of the sight of the grazing Wooloo!

Florian spreads his arms wide. "I am here to help, whatever that may entail!" He is cheerful, in much higher spirits than when they had originally met. His cheeks are flushed from the chill wind in spite of the scarf that's looped around his neck. "Should that entail protecting these little darlings from any harm, I am indeed here for the Wooloo."[break][break]

Wooloo. Even their name was cute![break][break]

He's grinning as he looks at Alexei, gesturing with a nod toward the fields. "Let us get closer, then!"[break][break]

Joli bounds ahead as Florian hops over the pasture fence and starts toward the grazing herd. "Careful not to scare them, Joli!" The Sylveon crouches like an excited puppy and wriggles his behind, teasing his trainer before slowing his pace as he grew closer to the sheep. And... oh, Arceus, they really were fluffy, weren't they? Like little clouds dotting the fields. Florian wants to gather one up and squish it, but he settles for offering his hand to one of the braver members of the flock. "I can't believe anyone could bear to bring them to harm."[break][break]

There's no one here but the two of them, their Pokemon, and an adorable mass of fluff, but he thinks that might change if what the farmers are saying is true.

“They’re just so squishable, don’t you think?” he enthused. He was itching to just practically jump over the barrier and squish the living daylights out of the nearest Wooloo, but he had to control himself.[break][break]

But they were just so damned fluffy! What was wrong with that?![break][break]

“Apparently they roll away when they meet people they don’t like. Which I think is extremely hilarious. It’s like they can tell from a distance if the person’s trustworthy or not,” he adds a few moments later, eyeing a second Wooloo who had come to join the first one that Florian was attempting to pat on the head.[break][break]

“You think… am I crazy if I told you that I want as many Wooloo as I can get my hands on?” he asked Florian a few moments later, turning to face him.[break][break]

“They’re just. Like. You get this urge to protect them from all the nasties in the world, and you can’t stand it if they get hurt. That kind of feeling…”[break][break]

He was pretty sure his Pokémon would riot if they found out they were being replaced by this fluff ball in front of him right now. Pretty certain. Who knew that majority of his fliers had petty tempers?!

Alexei seems utterly entranced by the Wooloo; Florian finds this incredibly endearing, hand over his mouth as he giggles. "They are very squishable," he agrees, patting the bravest of the flock between the two nubs of its horns. It's very soft. "That — that might be the cutest thing I've ever heard. You're not rolling away, are you, little one?" He's practically crooning over his newfound sheep-friend and he can't stop smiling at it. "You trust me?"[break][break]

It gives a little baa-aa in reply, and Florian thinks his heart may have melted. He exchanges a look with Alexei, one that clearly conveys: Arceus help me, I can't.[break][break]

"No," Florian decides, looking up from the Wooloo to offer a smile. "I don't think it's crazy at all. I would have a veritable army of butterflies if I could... though, really, one would be a good start." He chuckles. He hasn't gotten around to catching one yet, having focused on obtaining fairies during his years of schooling and study. "Perhaps a Vivillon, to remind me of home... although, I do love Butterfree, and Hoenn's Beautifly are... well, beautiful, aren't they? Ha!"[break][break]

He sighs, caught up in a daydream of his own.[break][break]

Joli is the one to snap him out of it, the Sylveon's normally musical cry sounding sharp with alarm. Florian startles and nearly cricks his neck as he turns to see a pair of Mightyena creeping up toward the field. Joli — tiny, ribboned thing that he is — faces them with all the bravado of a creature ten times his size, snarling.[break][break]

"I'll take one, you take the other?" Florian doesn't look to Alexei for confirmation before he springs into action, flustered thoughts culminating into directions for his Pokemon to follow. "Ah, merde — Moonblast, Joli!"

Thankfully, Florian doesn’t think he’s out of his mind.[break][break]

Slowly, very slowly he reached over to pat the second Wooloo atop its head, and Arceus he wanted to die.[break][break]

Soft.[break][break]

The Wooloo’s fur was incredibly soft and fluffy! Not like Mareep wool that left a bit of a lingering shock when messed with for long.[break][break]

Purple eyes meet blue and they also answer in the same wordless stare: ‘Too fluffy, send help quick, adorable!’ before he gives the Wooloo he’s minding a bit of an ear scratch. Hearing a really content bleating answer, he continues to give the fluffy Wooloo an ear scratching, at least until he suddenly feels the wool pull away.[break][break]

“Aw, come on, am I not that—” he began to wail, before he spotted a pair of Mightyena. No, they didn’t look to be Kyle’s, because if they were the League’s self-proclaimed ‘Dog Boy’ wouldn’t be too far behind. So these were wild Mightyena.[break][break]

And he had just the Pokémon perfect for this.[break][break]

Fumbling around in his jacket, he pulls out a battered-looking Level Ball and throws it in the direction of the oncoming Dark-types, watching as his Lucario unfurled from the beam of red light that materialized.[break][break]

“Vince, keep it away from here! Aura Sphere!” he calls out, looking back nervously to where the Wooloo had now rolled away, and one could hear the low whine in his throat before the dual-type concentrated and fired off a sphere of auric energy, catching one of the two Mightyena right in the face just as it bared its fangs for a Crunch attack.

Florian watches on with concern as Joli faces down the duo of dark-type dogs, fearing for his partner in spite of knowing the Sylveon was as capable as he was spirited. He needn't worry — though only the sun is visible in the mid-afternoon sky, Joli closes his eyes and gathers what lunar energy he can. It coalesces in the air as a ball of bright, pink energy that launches toward one of the Mightyena just as Alexei is sending out his Lucario to deal with the other.[break][break]

Mightyena disappears in a haze of pink, and Florian winces as he hears its whimpering cry. Battle is a necessity, but that doesn't mean he has to enjoy hearing Pokemon in pain.[break][break]

As the moonblast fades, Florian is surprised to see that the Mightyena has struggled back to its feet. Joli growls at it in warning, but the determined mutt refuses to back down. Its fangs begin to glow red-hot, and Florian's eyes grow wide.[break][break]

"Joli, watch out!" [break][break]

His partner is already trying to dodge the attack, but the Mightyena's fiery fangs catch in his hind leg. Joli yelps in pain, then quickly spins around in the hound's grasp to bare his own fangs. They latch onto the scruff of his attacker with a draining kiss, holding fast until the other Pokemon goes limp in their grasp. Mystical energy glows around Joli's wound, healing it and (Florian hopes) dulling the pain, and the Sylveon trots back to his trainer with only a slight fault in his step.[break][break]

"You are brave, darling, but terribly reckless." Florian picks him up, laughs when Joli licks his nose. He looks over to Alexei. "I guess they were not wrong to expect trouble."

Alexei wasn’t expecting the other Mightyena to get hit full in the face with the Aura Sphere, but the moment the Fighting-type attack connected, the canine went down like a sack of dropped flour.[break][break]

“Huh, so that’s how you can handle Dark-types effectively…” he muttered, mostly to himself.[break][break]

Thankfully, Florian’s Sylveon is able to handle the other Mightyena without too many problems, and once the pair of canine Pokémon slink away to deal with their injuries, the Lucario squints… suspiciously at Alexei.[break][break]

“What, Vince? What’d I do this time?” he asked the dual-type, before hearing the Lucario let out a snort and shake his head. Boy, there was going to be a riot later in the day and the dual-type wanted absolutely no part in this at all.[break][break]

“Sometimes I don’t understand Pokémon…” Alexei said in Florian’s direction with a sigh. He then turned his gaze to the grazing Wooloo in the fenced area.[break][break]

Was the one he was giving an ear scratch to going to return?

Florian cants his head when Alexei's Lucario seems to put up some kind of a fuss. He can't read the Pokemon well, as it's not his own, but it's clear by the gym leader's reaction that something is amiss.[break][break]

This time? Florian can't help but wonder.[break][break]

"Is he often like this?" The fairy-type trainer gives his Sylveon a once-over to examine his injuries before setting him back on the ground. Joli immediately bounds off to play with the Wooloo, clearly not as injured as Florian had thought. His expression is sympathetic as he looks toward Alexei. "They can be difficult to read sometimes, no?"[break][break]

With the threat driven off, the bold members of the flock seem to venture away from the huddle they'd congregated into. Seeing them roll away from danger had been as hilarious as it was adorable, and watching them roll back was no less entertaining.[break][break]

"I wonder how it looks when their wool is shorn?" He giggles at the prospect. "I don't think I could bear to rob them of it!"

“Not today, no,” he began, wondering what was going through the Lucario’s head.[break][break]

“Most of the time he’s impassive, but…”[break][break]

The dual-type is loathe to express his exact emotions, but the moment one of the Wooloos rolls back and literally bumps into the fence, his eyebrows go up at the sight of his human companion getting all in a tizzy and worked up.[break][break]

“Whoa! Are… are you okay?!” he blurted out, vainly trying to reach for the Wooloo that had rolled itself into the fence. “Are you fine?!”[break][break]

It’s here the Lucario’s eyes twitch, ever so slightly. A gesture that Florian wouldn’t miss, but clearly there is a look of sheer exasperation on the dual-type’s face as he watches Alexei fuss over the Wooloo, being ever so bold as to pick the fluffer up for closer inspection.[break][break]

“I… wouldn’t want to know how they look shorn down. That would be terrifying, to say the least,” he replied in Florian’s direction with a shudder. After making sure that the Wooloo would be fine, no permanent injuries, he sets it back down before it makes a bleating noise in his direction and nibbles some grass.[break][break]

“You think we can take one of them home? After what happened today?” he asked the other with a hopeful tone. “You think they recognize the signs of gratitude?”

Florian is torn between amusement and pity as one of the more enthusiastic Wooloo rolls right into the fence. He can't help the laugh that escapes from behind his hand, brow furrowed in concern for the poor sheep pokemon. Alexei is already rushing up to check on the Wooloo, and Florian glances over at Vincent instead.[break][break]

He looks... annoyed? Exasperated? Both?[break][break]

Maybe he's jealous? Florian isn't sure, and he's not about to ask when the dual-type is standing right there. Instead, he switches focus to Alexei in time to see the Wooloo set safely on the ground.[break][break]

"Aw, I think they'd still be cute!" He thinks of the people that shave their Furfrou back home, how different the canines look when they've been all dolled up and styled. It would be a little different with these, of course. "Have you ever seen a hairless Meowth? I did, once. It was... very strange, but also very cute. Poor darling."[break][break]

Alexei, it would seem, has grown attached. Florian watches the Wooloo as they graze, nibbles his knuckle in thought. "Perhaps we could ask? Maybe as an alternative form of payment?" He shrugs. He wouldn't mind a Wooloo, he supposes, even if they weren't fairy-type. They were very sweet. Joli seemed to like them, too, trilling excitedly as one of the flock rolled after him.

The sentence alone is more than enough for him to look up in alarm. Of course, he hasn’t encountered any of these particular Pokémon yet, but the unbidden mental image that rises to the forefront of his mind makes him shudder.[break][break]

“How can that poor Pokémon survive without hair,” was all he could mumble next, before turning his attention back to the Lucario, silently judging him. At this, he rolls his eyes in Vincent’s direction.[break][break]

“They did nothing wrong. They’re just adorable.”[break][break]

With that comment, the Aura Pokémon does his best impression of a face palm gesture, shaking his head behind his paws and just being so done with his human companion’s whimsical desires.[break][break]

“The Wooloo did nothing wrong! And you helped protect them from harm. I’m sure you can’t hurt them. Can you?” he goes on, addressing the Lucario who was still in the middle of his face palm gesture and still shaking his head in disbelief at Alexei’s words.[break][break]

Turning to Florian, he mumbled, “I think he’s jealous of the Wooloo…” before his face split into a silly-looking grin. This wasn’t helping the Lucario’s case, who let out a huffy growl and backed away from the fence.
