He'd been looking for the right Pokemon for weeks, now.

It was a frustrating search that had so far turned up no answers, and as a man who prided himself on his ability to get results, Gavin was growing increasingly impatient.

He brings no Pokemon for training, this time. There is only himself and his two best, the Crobat circling high above as the Lucario prowled the shadows nearby. No one around. Excellent.

"You know the drill."

Crobat shrieks. Lucario barks. The hunt is on.

Poor Spinda has the misfortune to wander into the wrong place at the right time.

Crobat pulls into a dive, four wings flaring out at the last second to catch itself before collision. It bites the normal-type's neck and drains its blood, and Gavin lights a cigarette.

"Easy, now."

He takes a long drag of his smoke and exhales as the Crobat reluctantly pulls away from the fainted Pokemon. They're ruthless creatures. Had he not said anything, he's sure the blood-sucking bat would have drained its victim dry.

"No need to kill it. Lucario. Get rid of it."

As the bat takes to the skies, Lucario drags the unconscious Pokemon into the nearby brush to hide it from predators. Flicking ash from the end of his cigarette, Gavin scans the area.

Mandibuzz poses a far greater challenge to Crobat than had the Spinda. Where Crobat had preyed upon the unsuspecting normal-type, Mandibuzz sought out the bat Pokemon in return.

A dark pulse of energy was barely visible against the night sky, blotting out the stars in its path before colliding with the four-winged terror. Crobat shrieks, a horrible sound that astonishes the Mandibuzz and causes it to flap back a few paces from its intended prey.

But Crobat would not let such an offense go unpunished.

Gavin watches his Pokemon with a rare fondness as it latches onto the bird's neck, leeching life from it with poisonous fangs. Mandibuzz struggled against the Crobat's unexpected strength, shrieking and retaliating with an air slash that served only to further incense the vampiric bat.

This time, Gavin doesn't order his Pokemon to stop. Mandibuzz plummets from the sky as Crobat releases it, and the scientist sighs as the bird thuds at his feet. It had sealed its own fate with its aerial assault.

"Don't get lazy now that you've fed," Gavin orders the Crobat, stubbing the cigarette out on a nearby rock. "Keep looking for our target."

Spiritomb appears, and Gavin sighs as he watches his Crobat begin to plummet from the skies. The hypnosis from the ghost-type had been silent and efficient.

Crobat is swallowed by a beam of red light before it can hit the ground.

"We've lost our aerial advantage," he says to Lucario, the edge of ire in his tone. Most of Aurus' attacks would be ineffective thanks to Spritomb's typing, so Gavin is forced to step in and offer more direction than he normally would. "End it. Metal Sound, Dragon Pulse."

Gavin has the sense to cover his ears, protection from the harsh metal sound that catches Spiritomb off-guard. From there, two quick blasts of draconic energy are enough to drive it off, the dual-type letting out an eerie wail as it drifted back into the darkness.

"Let's go."
