The ground beneath Gavin's feet rumbles. Sand begins a battle with the snowstorm for dominance, the sandstorm heralding the arrival of his Steelix moments before she erupts from the earth with a cry like grating rock and metal.

"You've grown strong," he murmurs. She towers over him, casting shadow over the footprints he'd left in the snow. They fill with the sand that batters his cheeks and settles in his hair, but the scientist is not annoyed. "Good. Lucario and Crobat could not find what I'm looking for."

They aren't with him today. A flash of light reveals the other Pokemon that accompanied him, a Sandslash with a shell of steel-and-ice that growls at the prescence of the sandstorm.

"Perhaps the two of you can."

"What the hell is that?"

He stares at the strange-colored Linoone with a frown. He's heard of the rarely-occurring chances for a Pokemon to possess unnatural coloring, but this was... something else. Linoone were not this strange, and he was sure he'd never seen one with its tongue perpetually lolling from its mouth.

It could be rabid, for all he knew.

"Steelix, take care of it."

The massive steel snake slowly coils around the much smaller Pokemon, the sandstorm continuing to rage. Linoone's attempt to take down the beast was as pathetic as it was ineffective, and Steelix merely brings her iron tail down upon the rodent with a resounding thud and a quaking of the earth. When she lifts it, the creature is unresponsive.

Overkill, but effective, he supposes.

Gavin knows what a Lickitung is, but the face he makes is similarly disgusted when the creature waddles toward him, long pink tongue lolling out of its mouth like a fifth appendage.

Gross.

"Sandslash. Hail, Swords Dance, Icicle Crash."

He recalls his Steelix as the sandstorm subsides, replaced by the hail that pelts Gavin's exposed forearms and causes him to grimace. It's worth it for the speed boost that it awards his Sandslash as slush rush takes effect, giving the dual-type enough time to get off a swords dance before Lickitung can attack.

The hideous creature curls into a ball and rolls out toward Sandslash, making contact with the steel-type's hardened body and seemingly doing little to phase it. In retaliation, Sandslash's empowered icicle crash hits hard, and though the Lickitung disables its use after the first attack, a series of icicle spears is enough to finish off the wild normal-type.

"Good work."

A noble roar interrupts the peaceful silence in the aftermath of their battle, and Gavin turns a withering gaze upon the offender.

It softens into something like consideration when he realises what had made the noise. A Pyroar, a proud leonine Pokemon that Gavin knew to be popular for its luxurious mane. If nothing else, he's sure he can fetch a price for it in the Black Market.

He recalls his Sandslash just in time; a flamethrower brightens the night and scorches the earth where his Sandslash had once stood. In its place, Gavin calls upon his Steelix: not the best match-up, but certainly better than the Sandslash would have fared against such a foe.

"Rock Slide."

The poor Pyroar doesn't stand a chance against the massive steel snake. It erupts from the the earth with a shower of rocks that nearly bury the lion in full, a low growl of pain alerting Gavin to the fact that the creature is, thankfully, still alive underneath the rock slide.

"I do hope you didn't damage it's mane," he muses, tossing a Pokeball at a leg he sees sticking out of the rubble.
