A new challenger rises up to the challenge! As Balder had issued the dates for their challenges, the man was honestly surprised to see the name of this man on the list. Thomas Benoit. Another gym leader, although he had only met him once and that was when they fought against a berserk Ursaring that had grew to an unexpected size. Needless to say, his first impression of the gym leader at the time wasn't excellent.[break][break]

Yet, the conditions also excused his actions. They had been necessary at the time. If no one had taken the leader position, it's highly possible that things would've grown more chaotic and they would've been unable to resolve this battle without any casualties. In the end, Balder could respect the choices made by the man. He didn't like how it was brought to that, but he agreed with the idea.[break][break]

Now, the dark gym leader wanted to face him in battle. Was it to see how the new gym leader fared? Or because he himself wanted to rise up and reach the throne of the champion? Or maybe it was simply for fun and experience? Seated on his throne made of stone, the "Kahuna" couldn't help but ponder on all those questions as he awaited the challenger at the top of the Silver Spire, inside the dome he had remodeled to become a fighting arena able to handle any kind of battles. As the challenger would arrive, one of the Alolan ladies would guide him to this circular dome located deep into the castle.

When Thomas had heard that the Sootopolis Gym had changed hands yet again, with Olivia's ascension to Council, Thomas couldn't help but want to check it out. More specifically, the name of the new Gym Leader, Balder Schwartz, had gained his attention. He had met the man back when they were dealing with a gigantic Ursaring around Oldale Town. Though the two butted heads, they still managed to get the job done, taking down the beast, and securing the safety of the area in the process.

As Thomas was being escorted through the castle, he couldn't help but silently take in the architecture. The footsteps produced by his boots would no doubt echo through the area. The Dark Gym Leader personally wanted to test the man's meddle, to see how he handled a Gym Battle. If anything, he could say the setting for the battle was interesting in of itself.

Finally, the two would arrive at the throne, where Thomas looked up to see a familiar face sitting upon it. "Balder, it's been a while.", Thomas greeted him. Both men knew why he was there, so he didn't feel the need to explain that part to him. On his person, he brought three Pokeballs, each containing his champions. He would wait to see what Balder had in mind, but he was looking forward to the battle.

"Indeed it has, Thomas." The Kahuna stood up from his throne, approaching the challenger. Doing so, the throne retracted into the ground and a platform replaced it, making it as if the seat had never existed before. Balder started stretching his arms and upper body as he kept looking at Thomas.[break][break]

"I've been meaning to ask ever since that day. Why did you decide to take the lead as you did, against that Ursaring? Why didn't you ask beforehand if everyone was fine with you leading the squad, or simply see how things unfold before grabbing our shabby teamwork while in a dire situation?" He had finally asked. The one thing that was bugging him.[break][break]

"I know the situation was really not ideal, and choices had to be made, but I'll be honest here: I disliked how it happened. So I'm really hoping your answer will make me forget this ever happened." As he said those words, the man placed a hand on the pokeballs that hung on his side. He was ready to start the battle, but he wanted to settle this dispute that had stood unanswered since then.

Thomas watched as Balder rose from his throne. He would notice that the throne would sink back into the ground, as the Gym Leader stepped towards him. Thomas silently listened as the man questioned him on why he acted as he did the day they took on the Giant Ursaring. Thomas' expression didn't falter as Balder expressed himself on how the situation unfolded.

"The short version: I didn't want another repeat of the rescue of the Commissioner.", Thomas would tell him. "To elaborate, during that fateful night, nobody had taken command. We were all waiting for the other person to take charge. The result was three dead Rockets, one dead Agent, several of our Pokemon dead, and a total media circus in the aftermath of it all.", he would explain. "I failed to take charge, as me and my team were there to assist, and I didn't want to step on the toes of the more established League personnel. This was a grave mistake, one that cost all those lives.", he would continue.

"I took command as I did to avoid things spiraling out of control as they did. Considering that if such a beast were to find its way into Littleroot or Oldale, several innocent lives would've been in danger. In all honesty, I don't like to take command in such a way, but I believe I did what was necessary to prevent an ugly situation from becoming uglier.", he would conclude. Whether Balder would appreciate the explanation, or he would come to despise Thomas didn't matter. Thomas felt he did what was necessary, and that's all that mattered.

So that was the reason... Avoiding another tragedy, another killing. What the man stated about what would happen if the Ursaring had not been stopped was true: The cities nearby would've been in danger, possibly even devastated. And the events of the rescue of Dahlia... Balder had heard about it a bit when he arrived in Hoenn, but never tried to learn more about it. Now that explained a lot.[break][break]

Silent, the man walked towards Thomas, passing beside him. Gently, he dropped a hand on his shoulder and nodded before continuing. After a few steps, the man stopped and raised his head towards the ceiling, taking a deep breath. "God I feel like an idiot for acting like that now." The Gym Leader lowered his head and took a pokeball from his belt.[break][break]

He then proceeded to call Keigo, his Blaziken, on the field. "You're an honorable man, Thomas. I misjudged you. Thought you were the kind of guy that felt superior to others, acted like a dictator and did everything for himself. Seems like I was wrong. So I'm gonna give you the first strike for free. Let's get this show on the road."
