Crobat's shrill shriek pierces the night air. It's a warning that comes too late; Gavin falters, but still his foot presses down upon the tail of a camouflaged Kecleon, startling both man and Pokemon.

"What the — get out of the way, then!""

He can't understand its squabbling, but he can guess by the aggression of it that the Pokemon is upset with him. What, is he supposed to test every step in case some idiot Kecleon is underfoot? He scoffs at it as it runs away, shaking his head.

"No need to pursue."

He sees the Crobat make for the chase, but stops it before it can close in. They're here for a purpose.

A sudden blast of psychic energy nearly knocks his Crobat out of the skies, and Gavin turns a cold gaze upon the offender.

It withers under the ice in his eyes, but he is without mercy.

"Compose yourself and finish it."

Four wings beat the air as the Crobat rights itself, then dives toward its attacker. Grumpig bounces up to meet the dual-type in the air, but this only gives Crobat the opening it needs: dodging the attack, it sinks its fangs deep to leech the life that had been stolen from it from its former assailant.

Once Crobat latches on, it does not let go until the Grumpig goes limp and plummets from the sky.

They move on.

Perhaps it's scientific curiosity that stays his hand when he spots another psychic-type so soon after the first. Perhaps it's simply how strange the creature looks, floating in some sort of transparent... sac?

The Pokedex informs him that it's called Duosion.

"Don't rough this one up too badly," he orders his Crobat, gesturing it forward. "Only enough to take the fight out of it."

Crobats poisonous fangs seem ineffective, further intriguing the scientist as he watches the Pokemon do battle. Duosion reflects some of Crobat's damage, retaliating with a psychic burst that elicits a pained screech from the winged creature. With its fangs finding purchase in the body somewhere beyond the barrier of gelatinous liquid, Crobat leeches life from the psychic-type to regain some of its vigor.

Duosion seems to possess the ability to recover quickly from the assault, but his Crobat persists. Astonishing his foe, he takes advantage of its shock to bite it hard.

As soon as Gavin sees it falter, he throws a ball.
