today is a day like any other. trainers congregate at the battle hut, all eager to show off their mettle, to grasp victory by the jaw and flaunt it over the others that wish to do the same. the only difference is that fernando is among them, fraternizing with the commoners. luckily, there's no sinister purpose behind his venture into the battle hut. no, he's surprisingly ordinary. no different than those around him. he's here for one thing: to battle.

the bell rings as another match comes to an all too familiar conclusion. an exchange of hands are done and a stage wide commentary calls for the next combatants to take the stage. fernando is on one end, unworried, indifferent to the results. he's not here to win. he's here to practice. the last few weeks have been eventful to say the least. his party's doubled in size and he's yet to dedicate any time to polishing his troops. where better than here to try them out. six pokeballs line his belt and he's ready to begin.

"whenever you're ready."

he allows the opponent to call upon their first pokemon. he wants an idea of what he's facing before he chooses. sometimes a disadvantage provides an ample chance to learn the limits of one's powers.

"THE STAGE IS SET AND THE COMBATANTS ARE READY, STANDARD RULES APPLY HERE; BOTH ARE ALLOWED TO BRING SIX POKEMONS BUT ONLY BRING THREE OUT FOR BATTLE ONE AT A TIME. AS WE ALL KNOW, THE TRAINER TO HAVE THE LAST POKEMON STANDING WINS!"

With the commentators now finished with whatever they were saying, Lucas got out of his area and approached the battlefield. He stood on one end of the rectangular arena, calm and unfazed despite knowing the fact that he's about to fight the famed Silph heir. Nothing mischievous was planned for today, Lucas didn't enter the battle hut as a member of Rocket, no, he came in as a regular trainer wanting to prepare for what's about to come.

As he was seemingly given the opportunity to start as per his opponent's cue, Lucas plucked one of his shrunken pokeballs off of his belt and held it tight in his grasp as it expanded in size. A flash of red light sprang out of the ball as his charmander appeared before him.

"Smokescreen." Lucas tersely commanded as his charmander opened its mouth, releasing a fog of thick black smoke that filled the stage.

"Setting up the mood."

"interesting."

fernando feigns interest as a sign of courtesy. frankly, he couldn't care less. but, for someone of his reputation, appearances mean everything. even when he lets out his riolu, who lands onto the stage with a silent plop, he has to follow up with direct orders. how sluggish.

"FORESIGHT."

riolu's aptitude for aura allows it to discern the charmander's location despite the fogginess of its previous SMOKESCREEN. there's little that can put a hamper on the pokemon's accuracy, as charmander is about to find out.

"QUICK ATTACK into FORCE PALM."

having to call out a command for every attack really cramps his style. it makes him want to puke at the normalcy that the rest of them maintain. how can this be called battling? this is nothing more than a farce, a prettied up sport for the tactically disabled.

regardless, riolu charges forward. swiftly. valiantly. all this to lunge at the charmander with an extended paw. make no mistake, even if the attack doesn't connect physically, the burst of aura that comes with it proves just as harmful.

The foggy arena made it difficult for everyone outside to discern which figure's which, though Lucas was pretty sure that his charmander was the one being sent across the field after his opponent's attack, the smog was cut in a crosswise direction, following the path that charmander took. Fang was evidently bruised.

"You better man up. Make a three-sixty and do flamethrower." He commanded. The charmander started to spew out flames as it spun in place, creating one big ring of fire around it whilst clearing most of the fog that covered the area.

His charmander was never meant to win, no. It was to train it at the very least and to potentially set up things for his next pokemon. He'd make the most out of it and try to weaken the opponent before the next round. "Go at it, slash." He commanded as the charmander rushed towards the Rilou with his claws drawn out.

hearing the opponent call out his command allows fernando the chance to anticipate it. the lag time between the command being given and executed allows him to interject. "jump," is all that needs to be said. the riolu musters all the strength it can to launch itself into the air, avoiding the FLAMETHROWER for the most of it. the fact that the pokemon twirls is a waste of a movement, spewing flames in an entire differently direction than rioiu's position.

when gravity calls and the pokemon is brought back down, charmander is given an opportune moment to rake its claws against flesh with a devestating SLASH. it comes as no surprise when riolu retaliates with a punishing COUNTER, thrusting another FORCE PALM out the moment it sees a chance to attack.

fernando observes, making note of the riolu's grit. it's still wild, feral enough to repay any attack with one of its own.

The charmander braced itself for the counter-attack, despite its efforts to lessen the effect of the strike, it still left the small lizard fazed, further bruising it. Another force palm, much like before. This time, Lucas was prepared. "You know what to do. Hold on tight and don't let go." Fang deliberately took the force palm to its gut, causing it to spit a spray of blood and saliva due to the sheer force of the attack. However, unlike before, charmander wasn't sent flying this time.

The small lizard hung on to rilou's arm with its dear life. While it's true that charmander now only needed a slight push before it inevitably faints, it won't fall down without a good hit. With Fang's last few bouts of strength, it then hugged its opponent's arm as tight as it possibly could with its tail wrapped around the arm just as tight, perhaps even tighter.

"Torch this shit's face. Flamethrower, point blank."

Fang's throat began to emanate a bright orange hue as it then sprayed a continous stream of fire out of its mouth, aiming directly towards rilou's face which was only a few inches away, all while keeping a tight hug on its opponent's arm.

oh? finally, some semblance of strategy. fernando's not impressed but the shift in the battle's tempo is a welcomed one. he's almost tempted to let the rest of it play out, to see what riolu can do on its own. the result? a face full of ash, the result of being subjected to a continuous stream of FLAMETHROWER. any longer and it may just end up cooked. fernando recalls it without so much as a smidget of concern. for him, it's simply onto the next one.

"meowstic."

this time charmander is faced with something with a little more range. with what stamina it has left, fernando has no need to take control of the situation. he does anyway, just because he can. "CHARGE BEAM." and, just like that, the air crackles as a jolt of electricity tears across the field. the concentration that comes with turning psychic energy into an electrical current proves effective, leaving the pokemon a little stronger than before. but charmander won't have to worry about it. its priorities should be elsewhere, like the instantaneous flux of light that threatens to take it out.

"Uncalled for." Lucas hissed as his charmander took the blow, leaving the poor lizard unconscious after a loud crackle as meowstic's charge beam hit it. It was still weak, understandable yet inexcusable. With his first pokemon down, he had two left to go. He recalled the unconscious charmander back to its pokeball and pinned it back to his belt.

"Houndoom" He spat as he sent out the hound which then appeared before him which then wasted no time and rushed the cat with a lunge.

"Firefang and don't let go if you do." Lucas commanded, wanting to let his houndoom to bite down at the meowstic. "Follow up with Flamethrower regardless." He aimed for another point-blank fire attack with the use of flamethrower whilst having the meowstic bit, however, if all else fails and houndoom's firefang were to miss, he aimed for a distanced flamethrower regardless.

The houndoom complied, now charging the meowstic with its fangs ablaze, snarling as it raced towards the cat.

"I'll torch it all." He nonchalantly stated as he glared his hazel orbs towards Silph.

how dramatic. there's no room for emotions during a battle. fernando knows this and shows no reaction at the malice that comes with his opponent's words. instead, his mind is on the battle, somewhat unsure of how to use his meowistic to the fullest of its potential. the thought never has the time to settle. his opponent yells out a series of conditional statements and fernando finds his chance.

"SUCKER PUNCH."

FIRE FANG never has the chance to connect. the moment it comes too close, meowistic finds an uncharacteristic burst of speed, driving its paw into a uppercut to the underside of houndoom's gaping maw. the LIGHT SCREEN that comes after is of the pokemon's own violation. an extended time under fernando's thumb teaching it to react on instinct. the order for "CHARGE BEAM" comes again and it rips right through the FLAMETHROWER that's held back from the previous LIGHT SCREEN.

Lucas gave one hefty release of air through his nose, his discontent was evident. He lacked experience but he's more than determined to learn. He held back with his orders, observing how Silph handled his pokemon. The mewstic's sucker punch forcefully shut the houndoom's mouth, causing its head to shoot upwards, rattling the hound. Fazed, the houndoom was unable to properly react against the meowstic's charge beam, causing for a direct hit. The houndoom staggered backwards, falling on its behind, however it only took a few seconds before it stood once more whilst shaking its head to recover from the concussion.

"Burn it." A short, yet action packed command, houndoom's eyes glistened with the intent to make charcoal out of its opponent. Houndoom began to spew a much wider stream of fire than the usual flamethrower, now aimed at the ground, causing the surrounding area near the meowstic to erupt in flames, as if the hound's mere intent caused these flames to erupt, engulfing the entire area around the cat with inferno.

As the fire around the area continued to grow, houndoom started to spew another stream of more concentrated fire with another attempt at flamethrower as it advanced further towards the cat, hoping to actually cook the meowstic.

"SHADOW BALL" is the only move he has left. in a traditional battle, fernando doesn't have the resources to handle the immersive flames. they clash against the LIGHT SCREEN and eventually engulf it entirely, leaving little to protect meowstic from houndoom's attack. the SHADOW BALL provides a counter current to the FLAMETHROWER that comes from the houndoom's INFERNO, but there's not much else that can be done.

"CHARGE BEAM."

the INFERNO begins to roast the meowstic alive and fernando can only allow it to suffer long enough to launch another attack before he recalls it. sure, it could take a little more punishment, but to do so would besmirch his name in front of the many spectators. they're here for sport, not victory.

now it's a time to pause. he waits for the flames to settle before thumbing over his next pokeball. he doesn't give it much thought before letting out his blastoise. the kanto starter finds no trouble stomping onto the field. the lingering heat from the previous attacks prove little more than an annoyance.

"HYDRO PUMP."

on command, the blastoise takes aim, launching a series of blasts at the houndoom. one after another, the pokemon doesn't stop, repeatedly firing as it were a mortar.

The final CHARGE BEAM sent out by the meowstic rendered houndoom fazed enough to halt its barrage of fire, cutting his flamethrower short. With that, Fernando recalled his pokemon, sending out his third combatant; A blastoise, stomping on the field with its huge, intimidating demeanor. Lucas knew for a fact that it's done.

The relentless barrage of HYDRO PUMP made a rather identical scenario, however this time it was water in place of flames. The non-stop barrage of water pinned the hound, it kept the hound on the ground no matter how hard it struggled to fight the current. Lucas knew for a fact that it won't stand a chance, most definitely not against a blastoise. As the houndoom could only take so much punishment, Lucas decided to recall it.

He had to choose his third fighter. "Vulpix." He took its pokeball, calling forth his vulpix. This vulpix was unlike any ordinary vulpix, it was a vulpix straight from Alola.

As soon as it was sent out, Lucas commanded. "ICY WIND." The vulpix complied as it then proceeded by exhaling a cold mist out of its mouth. With the arena wet, and most definitely the blastoise itself, Lucas hoped for a more potent result. As the cold mist spread across the damp arena, Lucas followed up.

"ICE BEAM."

The vulpix then spewed out a beam of cold energy, aiming directly towards the blastoise, freezing the moist ground that was directly below the path it took.

big mistake. while possibly the correct move, there's no chance to use fernando's strategy against him. he's spent too much time investing into the perfect set up to incapacitate someone much more powerful than the trainer before him. he knows the strategy's weakness, dismantling it proves simple enough.

"aerial RAPID SPIN."

the strain of blastoise's weight comes undone as it hunches over. with a bend of its knee, it launches upward, using the momentum to tuck into its shell and rotate at a high velocity. it's the same momentum innate to blastoise's ability to use SKULL BASH but retrained for a different purpose. up in the air, blastoise is able to shudder off most of its water, displacing it around it. even so, the sheer speed of its rotation makes it hard to lock up in one place. all vulpix really manages to do is change the terrain, turning the wet, rubber stage into one coated in slick ice.

all things that go up must come down. blastoise is no exception. the only difference is that something will beat it going down. the "FLASH CANNON" call causes the pokemon to resurface from it's shell, aiming a square blast directly to the vulpix's location. whether the attack lands, blastoise's huge frame is starting to come down. it may not know HEAVY SLAM but the weight of its body is not one to be ignored. such a small pokemon will be squashed flat should it remain.

The blastoise's RAPID SPIN was a rather surprising one, it took air and effectively dodged the ICE BEAM shot by his vulpix. The FLASH CANNON however, came as a bigger surprise. The vulpix took the blinding beam of light straight on, causing for it to stagger and scurry around. Eventually, the fat blastoise came to a fall.

Despite its sight only recently affected by the tortoise's FLASH CANNON, it wasn't that hard to spot the giant shadow casting down below. The blastoise came to a free-fall, through instinct, Lucas' vulpix hurried, making use of the slippery ice to slide away from the falling blastoise's area. Despite this evasive move, the vulpix was still caught with the shock of the blastoise's fall, causing it to topple over towards the direction it slid over.

As the blastoise fell, the ground beneath it cracked, causing the smooth ice that covered the ground below to shatter, creating sharp shards of ice which vulpix made good use of. "ICE SHARD" Lucas ordered as the vulpix gathered plenty of shattered ice towards itself, even adding some more as the ice beneath it also began to crumble. Shards of ice gathered over the vulpix's head as these were then shot towards the blastoise much like a machine gun would.
