It's fairly loud in the contest hall, the chatter and laughter of many potential couples mingling with the clink of glasses and the occasional Pokemon cries. Such big crowds intimidate the professor, but the presence of the Sylveon trotting at his heels is enough to ground him.

He's a little late, in truth, because his anxieties had delayed his entry for the first round of match-ups.

It hardly diminishes when he's given a table and approaches it only to see — is that who he thinks it is?

"Allo," he greets the man with a broad smile, Kalosian accent colouring the word. He ducks his head almost shyly before resolving himself to ask, "Forgive me if I am being too direct, but you are Monsieur Grandier, no?" He'd heard whispers of the name when he'd been working up the courage to join in on all the fun, but he hadn't considered the prospect of being paired with him. He finally remembers that he's supposed to sit down: his Sylveon jumps into his lap and settles, purring like a cat. "I am no coordinator myself, but I like to follow the competitions. Professor Florian Laurel. It is lovely to make your acquaintance."

figured it was a safe bet that cadis was acting as dawn for this! can change if need be!

"and you're the infamous fairy-type specialist, i'm familiar with your name and brand." a simple chuckle was given as a smile was worn, "the pleasure is all mine, professor. it's an honor to meet you." as a coordinator not many would expect some silly performer to have interest in the science side of it all, but dawn was genuinely ecstatic to meet the specialist. "i hope to see you as a judge someday in pokemon contests, you must have a lot of notes to give those who wield fairy-types." dawn would then ask right after, "what made you become a specialist in that area?"

"Imfamous?" Florian echoes, a light laugh punctuating the word. Blush colours his cheeks. "I did not realise my name was known outside of Kalos; you flatter me!"

He couldn't bear to look himself up to figure out how much exposure his research was getting outside of his home region. Such things made him far too nervous, like a movie star watching their own films.

"I would love to judge a competition," he confesses, grinning. "I have even though of participating with some of my own, but I've been unable to find the time — there is always so much work to be done." The work of a field researcher was never truly done, after all. "As for what made me specialize... ah, I have always had a love for the delicate nature of fairy-types, but this one certainly played his part." The Sylveon in his lap chirps as Florian indicates him, carding a hand through his soft fur. "You have fairies of your own: were you drawn to their beauty and grace, as I was? They are certainly naturals in the coordinating scene."

"haha, you could say i'm a collector. i don't exactly see beauty or ugliness, i just see pokemon with the power to create magic." facing professor florina, he'd add, "fairy-types are pretty magical, sadly i'm not the type to remain in one specialization. my curiosity leads me to tamper with one type after the other." lifhr laughter followed after his statement, "i'd like to enter a contest with something irregular. like a steelix or a klinklang." the professor then spoke of wanting to participate himself, "i think you should. coordinating doesn't have to be about winning or losing, sometimes you just want to wow a crowd with your art. after all, a pokemon's nature is said to exhibit their trainers personality. and from the looks of it professor you have a lot to give the world, haha!"

"Ah, see, this is why you are one of my favourites to follow!" There were plenty of coordinators who specialized in a single type, and Florian kept tabs on the progress of several fairy-type experts for obvious reasons, but Dawn was a true artist. "I think even a Steelix has beauty that it can show the world: potential, no?" They were terrifying, and absolutely massive, but that didn't necessarily make them unsuitable. "If you ever do decide to enter with one, I will most certainly watch."

He ducks his head at the compliment, flustered but appreciative. "Ah, I do not care for winning or losing, but I doubt I could say the same of my darlings. My Rapidash, especially!" The Galarian equine was incredibly self-centered: he can't imagine her affront if she were to lose. "My Joli just likes to show off," he adds of the Sylveon in his lap, "so I am sure he would enjoy it."

"i'd love your support, i'll be sure to get you a free ticket--if i'm not competing against you that is, haha!" a hearty laughter was shared with the professor. a fun conversation between the two, "honestly, professor florian, you have to tell me why someone with a busy schedule like yourself is here?" was he that interested in dating. it's no secret that the life of a scientists was a lonely one, was it too personal?

"It is because of my schedule that I am here!" A sheepish laugh is accompanied by the hand that rubs at the back of his neck. "I have only just come to Hoenn, and it can be so hard to meet new people when you spend the majority of your time in the wilds!"

Of course, he hadn't signed up for romantic pursuits... he'd hesitated over the checkbox before skipping right over it and marking 'platonic only'. He wonders if the very reason for such a distinction was also here tonight.

A bell rings, and Florian looks surprised. "Oh, do they really only give you such a small amount of time?" Yes, it was called speed dating, but he feels as if he's only just sat down! "Ah, I suppose we must move on — but it was lovely talking to you, Dawn! I wish you all the best luck during your next competition!
