Chaos had spread. The assailant had let the Drapion's tail catch and hold onto her as she fell down, avoiding both the incoming vines and the ground collapsing beneath her. She could see that Violet had rescued herself and that Fiamma had been lucky enough to not get caught in the line of fire.

The lights had turned right back on as all parties landed upon the ground.

Elaine had, for the first time, been able to get a good look at the situation. A Bombirdier and a Drapion. For someone that had been working to stealthily murder another, those were effective choices for one aspect but clearly not the other.

Though perhaps stealth was never something she needed. Just the right timing.

The bird was flying high above the sky and the target...no, the targets had yet to evacuate. The bird began its descent, covering itself in a deep blue aura. But it didn't charge towards the targets at all. Instead, it had charged towards the one who had made her escape to the same altitude.

Her policy had changed from stealth to scorched earth and she would not allow either witness or target to live any further.

The Brave Bird charged towards the suspended grass Pokemon.

But that wasn't all. With the unnamed assasasin in tow, the Drapion charged forth towards the targets, it's front two hands glowing a corrosive purple.

Without a moment's hesitation, Elaine ran towards its path. As soon as it got low enough, she cried out.

"Titania! Intercept and Sucker Punch it!"

Before it could get to the two targets, the Mawile intercepted the jab with its own fist.

Elaine could not help but find herself laughing at Shalin's story. But that laughter had all come to a close with the strenge sensation she had felt on her neck. "It felt like something brushed by my neck. But I see nothing and..."

She didn't want to dismiss the event, but there was nothing she could do at this point. "It's probably fine."

Elaine sighed before looking down into the depths they were about to traverse. It was a space beyond the reach of the lights from the world around them--a crevice of pure darkness.

"I'll be relying on you, Tiamat."

1st Expedition

As her expedition partner intiated an earthquake with her Seismitoad, Elaine had taken her position back atop Tiamat. She was honestly surprised just how much milage she had gotten from both of these expeditions from riding atop its back as it levitated.

Unlike Shalin, she did not have the luxury of wearing a Sygna Suit. Nor did she have the luxury of bringing the spacesuit she had used before on this exploration mission too. For better or for worse, she was stuck exposed to the elements with what she had--a black, hooded jacket, a pair of black pants, and a ponytail. That meant that her neck and face were exposed, so she unfortunately had to make do with the current situation.

"No, that makes sense. The desert was a crazy enough place already, but I can't imagine what it's like in a place like this." After all, it was this weird state of environment that seemed to not know whether it wanted to be underwater or above ground. It felt like it was a world trying to be two things at once.

"That's a bit unfortunate." Elaine had remembered Shalin's own talk about that dream but reality was often one to throw things for a loop and clearly that was no different for Shalin. Elaine was not too familiar with Unovan legends, so it was hard to say much about Keldeo beyond that. "So, did that dream of yours change ever so slightly?"

As she said that, though, she felt an odd sensation on the back of her neck. She had been atop her Flygon's back, so she should not have been surprised when something had stroked across what she had left exposed. Clearly, there were Pokemon floating around.

But the soft, fleshy, almost tenetacle like sensation across the back of her neck seemed to have no source. As she looked behind herself, she could not even see a Pokemon remotely similar to the sensation she had felt. Though, had she looked a bit differently, she may have noticed a jellyfish-like silhouette and some odd markings.

"Well, that was weird." She placed her hand to the back of her neck, but whatever liquid she had felt left behind had seemingly already evaporated. There was nothing there.

Duplicitous Masquerade VIP Room

Had it just been left as Seiichi Yukimura's fall incident, Elaine would have been happy to just leave it as is. In fact, she was about ready to. She had taken her seat once again, only to be met with objection from her next-seat neighbor.

"You would be surprised how many mysteries start like this." Elaine gave a gentle smile. "It's not staggeringly common, but it does happen. After all, the cover of dark makes it easy for that kind of thing to happen. But to belablor that point here would be a bit crass."

But, she would not have to belabor the point further. A shrill cry as well as one of the maids bursting in, crying out that the chef was dead. Not collapsed. Not exhausted. Dead. The fact that she screamed dead alone meant that it was probably obvious at first glance.

Elaine did not hesitate for a moment. She stood back up, swung an arm around and pointed her bare palm to the maid and others in the staff.

"Close--"

But she had found her attempt to issue commands being cut midway as the lady who was at the head of this party quickly lied through her teeth. Elaine had been ready to bark out orders to call the police, close the perimeter, and keep anyone away from the body but that would have to wait.

Was this actually a mystery game or was it the hosts' attempts to keep everyone calm in an exceptional circumstance? Given Seiichi's reaction, the latter was more likely true. No, almost guaranteed. He seemed the type who was not quick enough to adapt undercover, so the improv theory was most likely.

She took a breath before walking towards the door. "Guess the first place to look at is the corpse."

But before she did, she walked by Maki. Rather than stopping by her, she walked past her and glanced to her side as she said one thing. "Make sure the police are called. The faster they arrive, the faster we can prevent evidence tampering."

As she walked towards the door, she had spoken up (even though the one in a helmet had already left). "Everyone else needs to focus on places other than where the body is located. The faster we lock down their current states, the better we can catch evidence before the 'culprit' gets to it." She had tried to use airquotes to play along with the game for now, but she wondered how many of the others would be taken in by the improvisation.

Afterwards, she began to walk off towards the pantry where the corpse was hidden. There was a chance that the culprit had moved the body and that by focusing on the body first, they would be able to remove evidence elsewhere. But she needed to make for the body first regardless. Dead men may tell no tales, but their remnants left behind much that words could not simply encompass.

And hopefully, the others would secure the other locations.

After walking into the kitchen and walked to the pantry to find the body. She had passed by the helmeted champion, but paid him no heed for now as he investigated elsewhere.

She donned a pair of black gloves that she had kept hidden and got to work looking at the body, feeling around the body, and smelling around it for any odd odors.

Elaine could not help but find herself shocked when Gram had ended up using the shield for the first time. Sure, it was continuing its aggression, albeit with a new weapon in hand, but it was a new tactic nonetheless. Especially since it had discarded that blade at the very beginning. Was it swallowing its pride and using every disposable option possible?

In other words, it was now fighting at its fullest capability.

The shield had deflected the Shadow Claw. It had thrown Jeanne off balance for just a moment before it started. But that was fine. They could still fight.

Gram was taking its shield and slamming straight into Jeanne. Keeping a defensive stance while maintaining on offense. It was an interesting tactic, but that didn't mean it was over.

"Bitter Blade with the other sword!"

Only one sword was used for its Shadow Claw. That still left the other sword open. With the other blade glowing a hot purple, Jeanne stood her ground as she blocked the incoming blow with the blade heated by resentment. With that moment, she tried to lock Gram into place with Bitter Blade before slamming with her other sword.

Imprisoned Investigator--Despairing Detainee

Time passes on as it ever does. Seconds to minutes. Minutes to hours. Hours to days. The march of time was inexorable and the erosion of will that came with it was inevitable. No matter how much time passed and no matter how much she hardened her heart, it was inevitable that it would be worn down.

Time passed.

Torture continued.

Investigations answered.

Wills eroded.

If resolve was akin to a flame, the embers were barely still lit. Yet, in that final day, for the first time, she felt those flames rekindling. It was not like it was billowing again. In fact, it was still a struggle to keep them from being snuffed, but it was once again a tried and true flame in her soul.

GET TO THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PRISON.

That was the message that had rung out through everyone's dreams and that was the goal that everyone's surges in willpower had directed to. When the time came, there was no need for further words. She immediately ran forward.

Her legs felt lighter than they ever had. The pain from the beatings almost felt like a mere aches at this point as adrenaline washed over her. They were not enough to stop her. Not when she had gotten the momentum rolling.

As she did, the first thing to get in her way was one of the Megalopolan guards. In that one moment, her eyes fixated on a single point on the guard's neck. Without another word, she got into a half stance before driving her elbow towards that point. She had not fully learned the martial arts she had been taught, but for that moment, the strike almost felt natural. Even as her arms moved, she saw arcs of electricity flying out from her limb.

In that moment, she grinned. The situation was still far from ideal. It was still desparate, but they now had a means to fight back. It wasn't just her. In the next moment, she found herself shielded by Kyrenai Black 's chains.

"Good to finally be working together like this, Kyr."

The Green Beast of the Loyal Three stood before them. As she saw it, she looked it dead in the eyes.

"I refuse to falter here. Not to you."

Her eyes focused on a single point on the enemy's body as she said that. Pokemon or not, she could still strike it.

"None of us will. We'll go beyond simple weakness right here!"

In that moment, she aimed to strike once again with her palm and elbow--this time at the warden that had tormented them for a week. As sparks flew from her arms and legs, she had hoped to strike and use the impulse from the contact to throw herself back towards the platform.

And we'll crush you all.

Elaine had no idea what to expect from the area she was set to go on an expedition in. Suffice to say that going on an expedition in a place classified as a "deep sea" made her question whether she needed to bring some form of protective gear. She could have probably gotten ahold of the suit she had used for the meteorite option if need be.

The last time, she had been exploring a vast desert, so she had expected something different, but this was an entirely different beast.

It was bizarre and surreal.

But, here she was, standing on ground at this bizarre locus.

"At least it's not sweltering, this time."

Elaine adjusted her collar as she looked to her current partner for this expedition, a young woman she had once met on a beach at a large event before.

"So, you've had a bit of a lay of the land before, right?"

Duplicitous Masquerade VIP Room

Elaine was not sure what to say when she had found out she had been one of the winners in the scavenger hunt. But, at the end of it all, she was being led towards that very VIP Room that was the reward for the winners. Being a detective meant that the networking opportunities would be incredible here.

She had ended up opting to wear a very familiar red dress. Last time she had used it, she had still been recovering from the injury she had on the meteorite, but this time was different. The gaudy red dress which gradiented to black lace as it reached her chest was not contrasted by the awkward tan of bandage wraps. The red shawl with its golden clasp along with the four black straps from the dress lay perfectly symmetrical atop her shoulders this time.

Unlike last time, the dress and steel mask just felt right.

Steel yourself, Elaine. You've got this.

She had dressed herself of the occasion. She had prepared herself. So, she pumped herself up as she was let in through the doors of the VIP room.

"Thank you for having me." Elaine held her dress with both hands in a curtsy as she greeted the hosts of the event. After letting go of the dress and standing up straight, she looked to each of the other guests who had been invited.

Not a single person that I've met before, huh? That's a shame.

A quick scan of the others brought forth the fact that one of them had chosen a very similar color scheme to her own.

"It's a pleasure to meet each and every one of you."

With that single blanket greeting, she took her seat much like the rest. She was almost ready to get up to help the maid who had unfortunately spilled the first appetizer. But, the staff was quick to sort things out before any assistance was required. The disadvantage of being far enough from the scene was that she could not reach out to help fast enough but that meant that none of the food had splattered onto her dress.

Truly the silver lining.

It was just a shame that the replacement appetizer had been a bit of a disappointment. Sure, it was servicable, but it seemed kinda lacking. Elaine never had a discerning taste but there was definitely something off about it. Perhaps that was the downside of having to re-prepare the appetizer so quickly.

On the other hand, if it were intentional, it was a brilliant way to let the main dishes shine even more. Everyone had their own, but hers was a dish with two separate dishes placed onto one plate. On one side, a set of stir-fried noodles with fried tofu and multiple different types of peppers. On the other half was a mapo tofu glistening as red as lava, the peppercorns calling to her tongue.

She was struggling to hold back her saliva as she gazed upon the tantalizing mess of red on her dish. Luckily for her, she had also been provided with a pair of chopsticks--ones that looked well-made. Without a moment of hesitation, as the others had all begun to dig in, she did as well. One poke and twist of the chopsticks would hit the stir-fry. The next would hit the mapo tofu. Alternating, with each bite, she gladly felt the burn and bounce of the spices on her tongue--a flavor that could bring even the most hardened to tears.

"This is absolutely delicious!" She held her hand to her cheek with an almost childish smile as she spoke between bites.

Fortunately, the amount of food she had before her was going to be far beyond what she could finish in one sitting. Which meant it would sustain her for at least two more meals. Leftovers were truly a wonderful thing.

As she placed the chopsticks back down and wiped down her hands, the lights suddenly cut out. Next came the thud. Then, the lack of response after the first call of Seiichi's name. While it sounded like he had simply slipped on something, Elaine knew this kind of pattern all too well.

Immediately, she stood up from her seat and walked towards the sound only to find herself stopping halfway when she heard Seiichi's awkward laugh. As the lights returned and as the victim in question stood back up, Elaine sighed from her position and placed her hand on her chest. She looked at the area where he had probably been when he slipped, wondering if there was still remnants of the spilled soup there.

"That came dangerously close to the setup of a murder at a party, Mr. Yukimura. I hope you're alright."

Restrained Rendezvous

It was clear that he was having a hard time even comprehending the idea of having hope. In fact, he was clearly having a hard time with the idea of being open. His tendencies veered towards keeping himself closed.

Based on his mannerisms, that was clear. Even if she couldn't see his face, she was completely aware of that. Everyone had something that they would rather keep safe and hidden from the world, especially from strangers. They were strangers to each other at the end of the day.

"Ever..." Elaine sighed as she walked closer to Ever and sat down next to him.

"I know we're merely nothing but cellmates here." She hated the fact that she was behind a mask. The fact that she couldn't communicate completely was nothing short of frustrating. But she had to deal with it.

"But if you ever want to talk about anything, we're together for now. So don't hesitate." She scratched at her head for a bit. "I won't ask you to tell me anything. There's no way I can do that without trampling over your dignity. So I'll wait. Until you are ever ready to do so."

Humans had many skeletons in their closets. As a detective, what she was saying ran counter to her instincts, but human dignity was still something precious. Something worth maintaining.

You did it, Violet!

The chandelier was falling. Despite the change in the set-up, the assassin had responded and found a way to try to still maintain the same plan with adjustments. But that was the thing with impromptu adjustments. Even the slightest change can throw them off course.

But it was still enough of a danger. The wrong direction meant that there would be collateral damage.

"TITANIA! IRON HEAD!"

The Mawile she had released at that moment glowed a bright silver before charging headfirst to the falling piece of furniture and slamming into it, throwing it off to a distant wall. The entire building quaked a bit for that one moment.

The air went quiet for a quick moment. Not a single person had dared to speak. Had the panic just not yet set in? Elaine was hardly sure, but the lights had not resumed.

"Everyone evacuate!" Elaine cried out. "Head to the main exit! That includes you, Ms Cora. Mr. Anzai!"

As she quickly directed everything out, two things happened at once. The lights returned. But something more pressing ran through her ears. And as she turned her head she saw it happen.

"Unfortunately, desperate times call for desperate measures. You forced a plan C."

In that moment, the sound of the chandelier being knocked away reached the ears of everyone upstairs.

"I'm sure you understand how easy it is to remain hidden when you've been seen if what you show isn't real, right? It makes it real easy to use these kinds of flashy methods without abandon." The woman poked at the side of her face a couple times before releasing a Pokeball from her other hand.

"I would have much preferred to get all of this done in one fell swoop and escape but I guess we're forcing a plan D here."

From this point, she must have found no need in being subtle. The Drapion she released landed behind her. "So let's let the party begin."

With a single snap, the Drapion slammed its arms and legs on the ground--shattering the ground beneath the two of them with a single Earthquake. In that moment the lights came back on and everyone fell down to the ballroom below.

Aurum Badge Challenge

It had been enough. The tactic had worked and it had done severe damage. The Aegislash had been knocked pretty far away. Jeanne took the moment it had hit to regroup back into a stance. It may have worked, but it was not over.

The scars left on the ground from the attack that had hit it were proof enough that their opponent was hardly a slouch.

The battle would only ramp up from here. Moreover, a surprise attack with Phantom Force would probably not work again. They had locked out that option by revealing their hand.

So what?

From the very start, Elaine had known that she could not stretch a hit and run strategy with an opponent like this. Doing that would be pure folly. From the moment that blades clashed, she had been feeling something in her soul lighting up. Each spark from the colliding blades lit it until it was a blaze stronger than anything she had felt in a while.

"You really need to lighten up a bit."

Those words were directed towards Gram. The enemy who they had hit had been nothing but a true menace. Its aggression was pure and raw. But that was no fun. When two Pokemon fought with all their hearts, Elaine felt like she could come to understand a bit more about the Pokemon and the trainer that she had fought against. Maybe it was her profession speaking, but she happened to like learning more about her opponent like this.

But this felt like butting heads with a brick wall with no heart.

Perhaps that was why Elaine was smiling in that moment. It was a raw and feral smile that she had rarely shown. It was hers.

So, she wanted to break through. Just a bit more.

"Get in there. So close that your souls touch! Let's claw in there and bring them down!"

Abandon hit and run for now. Hit them with pure infighting. Let swords clash and sparks fly until one of them fell.

Understanding her trainer's words, the flames atop Jeanne's heard billowed. One of her blades glowed a deep purple, releasing unfiltered miasma. Without hesitation, she charged to once again slide the shadow claw across its body and then slam it back down into the ground.

Two Swords vs One sword. She would make damn sure the numbers advantage didn't go to waste.

It almost felt like time stopped as she received an embrace from behind. The winds had calmed to stillness. The lights dancing in the sky felt as if they froze in place. The sounds from the dream world around them filtered into mere nothingness.

Despite all of the bodies flying and all of the hard labor, this was probably the first time since she had been captured in this prison that she had felt the simple comfort of contact with another person.

“If anything, it’s no coincidence that this one is at the core of something that allows us to replenish our minds and willpower, as cold and distant it might seem.”

"Or perhaps the being sealed away is meant to do the opposite to us."

If their Pokemon, or at least dream versions of their Pokemon, were here, then it stood to reason that what lay before them was the real Azelf...or at least its dream self.

"The chains manipulate our will and have taken away the Megalopolans'. I wonder..."

Was the act of sealing away Azelf crucial to how the Toxic Chains worked?

“I know you don’t trust yourself completely these days. But you can believe in me. And I know you won’t break. Because you are here. Because this place exists. Because I am here for you. As are the others here close to your heart. And I am not just saying that. I have faith in you.”

"Heh..."

She stood there in silence.

She replayed those words in her head again.

Without another delay, she pivoted while in Violet's arms and wrapped her arms around in an embrace.

"Thanks, Violet."

Elaine should have known that. Almost everything Violet had said, Elaine should have known from the start. So, she didn't cry. She had no need for tears.

After all, she remembered why she had to become strong.

It was painful, angonizing, and draining. But she would not let those threads snap.

She was someone who could fight for something smaller. Those few lives she could hold in her hands.

But for now, she'd let the warmth from the one she held right now linger. Just for a little longer.

"So, let's get a little investigation done." The embers had been lit. The detective may have been toyed with in reality, but the dream was a different story.

She had full freedom here. She had none of the pain from reality here.

With nothing restricting her, Elaine could investigate to her heart's content.

"So, you." To one of the Megalopolans roaming nearby, she spoke up and interrupted them. She had no notebook to write everything on, but she had the next best storage--her brain. She pointed up to the central tower behind them. "So what's Azelf doing here? Was it always here?"

She would interrogate everyone she could. She would investigate the tower as well. Perhaps, there was something noticably different to it compared to the day cares their Pokmeon were kept.

And thus, the week of investigation would come to pass.
