The shift in gravity catches her off guard and she shrieks as she tips off his back, tumbling into the surf. Her eyes squeez shut and she sucks in a breath just before she hits the water.[break][break]
Cal pops back up, wet, pale hair hanging in her face as she blinks up at him. Her mouth falls open in a scoff. “You’re terrible!” she sputters as he laughs and laughs.[break][break]
Never mind that the sound makes her heart feel warm and fluttery.[break][break]
In the next moment she’s rolling back up, and surging forward to tackle him. Though at her size, there’s no real guarantee she’ll be able to trip him up. “Ha!”

“Ah, okay,” she fumbles to climb up onto his back, awkwardly so with a bad ankle. Her heart thumps in her chest as her ninetails flanks them, turning back to assist Uriah’s mega machamp though she has no additional strength of her own. Her paws stamp the grassy earth as SHEER COLD emanates from her body—flowing outward and dropping the temperature of the territorial pokemon as frost licks up the jungle foliage.[break][break]
She doesn’t realize that the tiny kartana has hopped up onto her shoulder until they are well away from the onslaught. She catches a glance of it out of the corner of her. “Oh, cute.”[break][break]
Her finger draws across on of its little papery arms before her arm secures around Uriah’s neck again. “Note for future reference: we should really stop picking these places for new and exciting dates.”[break][break]
Despite her earlier irritability, Calla can’t help but laugh as the imminent threat of danger finally passes.[break][break]
But it’s also kind of thrilling, isn’t it?

Wow. Uh. Was he really going to look straight through her and keep going?[break][break]
Luckily, Calla has never been a shy sort of person in situations like this.[break][break]
Maybe, though, it was a lucky stroke that he didn’t seem to recognize her—even if her personnel files likely would have passed through his hands at some point when she’d first been hired at Akura.[break][break]
Because, yeah, maybe she’s not shy, but it’s not like she dates a lot. She doesn’t know how to go about talking with a parent of said partner. Let alone one she has…opinions on. But then again, this probably means that URIAH BLACK hasn’t talked about her. Doesn’t it? Her lips press into a thin line.[break][break]
“Mr. Black,” she isn’t meek or timid or questioning. Like some scared little buneary wondering if she got his name right.[break][break]
She was startled initially, yes. But not because it was him.[break][break]
“It’s strange to see you out of office.” But obviously she wouldn’t see him in-office anymore, either. Since, well, she doesn’t work there anymore. Obviously.

Her arm does slide around his shoulder and she relents her stubborn need to act alright as he hoists her up. Despite the snap of her temper, if there’s anyone apart from her brother that she trusts with her vulnerability, it’s Uriah.[break][break]
Calla’s good foot, though, barely touches the ground once he’s upright again. It’s sort of laughable, really. Would that she could be taller.[break][break]
“Agreed.” Wariness flares in her as Chad appears to play guard. With a tap of one of her own pokeballs, a much smaller mienfoo bursts free to cover their backs.[break][break]
The little ones are curious, that much is obvious. They crowd the strange humans wandering their jungles. Calla’s mood swings to the opposite end of the pendulum, and a laugh slips out.[break][break]
“They must be,” she agrees, “They’re pretty cute when they’re tiny like this.” The kartana in particular. They’re itty bitty.[break][break]
One flits up to land in her open palm, pulling another laugh from her.[break][break]
It’s a short lived intrigue—a warning cry rips through the air toward them. Followed by the slashing bursts of a sharp, gusty AIR CUTTER.

Why is it so easy to forget that they’re not really all that old at all? She’d be inclined to think they were tired thirty-somethings with their little work schedules and agendas, and not on the lower half of their twenties.[break][break]
But this serves as a reminder. Fun. She’s actual capable of it. She can breathe easier—just a girl, not one haunted by the Kanto she left behind. Not one hunched by the chip on her shoulder, or the drive to succeed she carries herself forward with.[break][break]
Her face twists up in distaste. Playful distaste, but still. Please?[break][break]
“Why should I have to beg?” she shoots back, incredulous laughter still clinging to her words. Her fingers cling as best they can—which is not a great hold against bare shoulders as opposed to the grip she’d have on shirt fabric.[break][break]
“What about the…” her words are broken apart by a defiant screech at his deliberating and salt water sloshes up to lick at her kicking ankles. “What about the goodness in your heart??”

“Huh?” She twists toward him, confusion evident on her face. She probably should’ve expected to be scooped up, but she shrieks all the same when she’s tossed up over his shoulder.[break][break]
The startled sound warps with laughter. Giggles wobbling the huffed “Uriah!” that tumbles free. Hands swat at his back, entirely harmless and playful, as he hustles to the water.[break][break]
“You better not throw me,” she warms from over his shoulder, trying to turn back to look at the red shock of his hair with a pointed look that he can’t see.[break][break]
Calla is better with him. Someone kinder and more lighthearted, only with him. The chip on her shoulder always just a little less heavy and embedded.

“I’m fine, I’m fine.” She insists stubbornly as she takes his offered hand and allows him to haul her up.[break][break]
Irritation lingers, but she tries to swallow it down as she looks up at him. There’s something sullen in her eyes that goes unvoiced, because really, she knows he didn’t mean to. And she doesn’t really know why her reaction was so pronounced.[break][break]
It doesn’t make any sense.[break][break]
And she’s definitely not thinking it has anything to do with the wide, ominous moon that rises in the distance.[break][break]
When she tries to take a step, though, she winces. “It got me good.” Another wince as she lifts her weight off the tender ankle.[break][break]
A flicker of pale white movement catches her eye as she tries to juggle balance by holding his arm. With one hand she tries to point. “Look over there. A little one?” A kartana, maybe?

“Yeah,” she huffs out a laugh. “Why did you choose this place for a picnic?”[break][break]
She’s not too bothered by it, though. Surely it can’t be as bad as their first trip out there. That one was more stressful by leagues. Her head tilts at the explanation. “What happened in Mossdeep?”[break][break]
She doesn’t register the similar entrapment of her own ankles. Not until he steps away, and tries to tug her with him. When her feet don’t budge, Calla frowns. “Uriah, wai—“[break][break]
It’s a beat too late.[break][break]
Resistance makes her balance topple and her hand slips from his as she goes down front first to the ground, kicking at the vine that managed a tighter hold at her smaller ankles.[break][break]
Calla winces. “Would it kill ya to slow up?” she snaps, only to immediately frown at her own clipped words. The irritation that bubbles up is unexpected, and somewhat unnatural. As if spurred out of nowhere for no reason.[break][break]
“Sorry,” she grumbles, confused at how reluctant the apology sounds. “The fall just hurt.”[break][break]

The indignant response is expected, and it draws a giggle from her, conspiratorial and mysterious. “Can’t tell you, it’s…a secret!”[break][break]
Of course it isn’t. She just enjoys getting a rise out of him.[break][break]
“Mmmm yeah, okay,” she agrees with little protest, allowing him to help pull her up. Hee grookey stays behind, flopping on her abandoned towel for a nap in the late afternoon sun.[break][break]
Her hand remains in his, and it’s sort of funny now that she thinks about it. Wasn’t it a almost a year ago they were here, doing exactly this with little idea of how things would change?[break][break]
“Hope you can still swim if you’re a grubbin,” she teases, bumping him with the sideways jut of her hip.

An abandoned range of bunkers greets them as they trek through the expanse of the ultra crater. She swears, the place just grows stranger with each passing visit.[break][break]

“Good question..” Calla murmurs in response, expression furrowed in a look of puzzled scrutiny. Stepping toward one, her hand rests on the frame of an open doorway as she peers into the gloom. She squints, but she can’t see much of interest.[break][break]

If they had the time to inspect each one, she might have.[break][break]

“I wonder if there’s anything of use here.”[break][break]

For now, though, she gives up and wanders back toward Uriah, glance drifting beyond him to the field only barely visible. The celesteela looming throughout, though, are clear as day.[break][break]

“Maybe that?” she points.

Maybe there was a small part of her that had been worried he’d think she was only saying this to distract him from her news, or because she was leaving Akura. But the way he beams at her softens her edges and quells her anxieties. Almost instantly, easily.[break][break]
Calla sighs, making a show of reluctantly acquiescing. “I guess I can agree with that.”[break][break]
It’s completely obvious from her tone that she’s more than open with the compromise. [break][break]
When she looks at him, her face is brighter and far more cheerful than her normally serious complexion.[break][break]
Her hands slip up to wind around his. “I think that’s perfectly good.”

The grookey tumbles away and falls in the space between them, chattering in play. Calla laughs at the sight, at the fact that Uriah humors the tiny monkey’s attack.[break]break]
Her mouth falls open and she scoffs in amused disbelief.[break][break]

There’s an edge of sarcasm that laces her words, “I mean, you would be a worm, though, soooo…”[break][break]
