Her eyes widen at the scrawl that the simisear unveils. “This is like…totally crazy, right?” Cal asks as she pulls herself up and wanders closer to the wall. “I think it's telling some kind of story. What do you think?” She glances back over her shoulder at him.[break][break]
Shrouded in shadows in the dark space, her foot nudges against something previously unnoticed on the ground. Frowning, Calla looks down.[break][break]
And promptly lets out a shrill shriek.[break][break]

19 encounter the haunting corpses of megalopolans that have been completely overtaken by black crystal or metal. it seems like the megalopolan's flesh has been completely overtaken by the material.

Her face crumples in distaste at the unpleasant, burnt flavor. But she watches him as she chews and swallows. Then she sticks her tongue out to prove she succeeded with a prolonged, “Ahhhh!”[break][break]
“What do you mean ‘not the same’? The point was the bad taste!” Her outcry was quickly swallowed up by the little kiss–traded out for a giddier smile.[break][break]
Calla’s eyes lit upon the new s’more with obvious interest. She takes the offered half–normally stern expression lighting up in obvious delight. “Oohh, that’s so good!” she blurts, voice muffled by the treat, and her cheeks ballooned like a skwovet’s.

“Are you surprised? It’s me.” It’s just a joke, but she laughs at herself. She’s better at doing that now, since she met him. It’s a little bit true, after all, those words.[break][break]
Always the heavy hitter.[break][break]
She only asks because she cares, and she’s sure he knows that. So she doesn’t backtrack or give him an out to not answer. A tiny smile settles on her mouth, content with his response.[break][break]
“Good, I just want you to be happy.” Another quiet laugh follows, “Please, I didn’t do that much. Just nagged you incessantly about deadlines, and rushed you to meetings.”[break][break]
Her eyes fall shut as leans against him, “I miss that, though.” Her nose wrinkles “You sound so mature and old going on about stability.”[break][break]
She likes that about him, though. But then, he’s always managed to make her feel steady and secure.[break][break]
When her eyes open again, she notices something they’d missed before. Scrawl across the old walls, barely noticeable in the dark. “Hey… do you see that?”

“Guess I can still do that,” she considers, humming. “A tent isn’t a great medical facility though.” The gentleness in her own look mirrors his, the flutter of her heart in chest stirring up whenever he looks at her this way.[break][break]
“I think there are worse people I could be stuck with.”[break][break]
The twist of his smile brings back the memory of her s’more in the making. Or what should have been. “Oh, shoot!” she fumbles, letting go of his face to snatch the skewer up again.[break][break]
The smoking remnants are the most unappealing thing she’s ever laid eyes on. A whine creeps up the back of her throat, and her bottom lip puffs out miserably as she turns wide, violet eyes on him.[break][break]
But—[break][break]
She’s too competitive to back away from a challenge. Holding the marshmallow up, she blows on it to cool it faster. “See? Way more tolerable.”[break][break]
But tastier? Doubtful. With a grimace, she plops the marshmallow in her mouth, expression immediately twisting in distaste at the over-burned flavor.

“Yeah, so you can count on me too,” she says definitively, curling her arm into a determined flex.[break][break]
“Does Akura feel like you, then?” She plops down next to him when she asks, leaning sideways to bump him with her shoulder.[break][break]
Sometimes she wonders if he tilted the opposite way. No longer trying to piss his father off, but rather please him to the point of letting go of his own wants. A small scoff chases his remark about his father not caring too much.[break][break]
“Yeah well…who needs’im..” A moody little grumble.[break][break]
Not that she thinks he’s bad at what he does—quite the opposite. Calla just wants to ensure that he is happy. The same way he supported her move to League HQ despite the fact that it meant not working together.[break][break]
Something she’s sorely missed recently, when she slows down to think about it.

Calla does not have the same tolerance for spice, so whatever the context, hot sounds miserable to her. “That was practically still on fire..” she continues to grumble, though it was more like smoking by the time he popped the marshmallow in his mouth.[break][break]
Her face droops with a frown, and she doesn’t relinquish the hold of her hands against his cheeks.[break][break]
“Then what I gotta play nurse for?”[break][break]
Sure enough, though, he seems just fine. She tuts, tongue clicking in an affectionate chide. “You’re a nut.” But of course, she already knew that. She leans forward and swiftly kisses the tip of his nose.

“I gotta applaud our sense of direction,” she remarks as they roll out mats for the night. Calla was sure that she had been about to fall over a few times on the way there from the sheer size of their camping packs. “I thought it would take us longer to find our way back.”[break][break]
Not that it had been a cake walk–the abandoned city is still creepy as heck.[break][break]
“Oh yeah? Well then you’re already a seasoned pro. Can keep me nice and safe,” she smiles brightly before pausing to hum, “Though I’ve got late night aptitude downpat as well.”[break][break]
All that experience from working on projects late into the evening, making sure every agenda is planned and set down to the last letter.[break][break]
“Why didn’t you stick with it? The military training.”[break][break]
She asks to fill up the quiet of the space around them, because she figures the answer probably has something to do with his father.[break][break]
But it feels too quiet to not find some way to prolong their chatter.

Cal’s eyes go wide as he pops the whole thing in his mouth. “Wai–” But it is too late. Her face morphs into a look that silently says ew..[break][break]
“I meant after it wasn’t scalding,” she squawks, her own skewer balanced in her lap as both of her hands lift to squish his face.[break][break]
“Did you burn your tongue, dummy? Lemme see.”

Calla's eyes roll as he parrots her words back, but even then, she smiles. The back and forth comes easily. And unlike her harsh formality with others, it's playful with Uriah. "Yeah, yeah, okay s'more chef supreme." She scoffs, sarcastic.[break][break]
Chin cradled in her hands, she watches him - following the movement of his hands with rapt interest. Then she takes the offering, twirling the metal rod between her fingers.[break][break]
"Kay..." she waits, though, until he tries first. The smell of burning sugar fills the air and her face scrunches when he presents the totally burnt marshmallow. "Oh yeah?" she replies skeptically. "Eat it, then."[break][break]
A dare, lowstakes. Obviously.

His cautionary words cause her brows to pinch together. He sorted of sounded like her. Did they do a brain switch, or something? "Maybe...the rush is kind of what makes it fun, though."[break][break]
There are a lot of things that can be dangerous. But Calla doesn't want to live in a cushy, padded bubble of safety. It's stifling, she's come to understand. "Maybe we should train more?"[break][break]
The bop on her nose makes it wrinkle. Eyes cross slightly as she follows the path of his finger. Then her laughter joins his.[break][break]
"And that's why you're actually good at this stuff." she teases, taking the offered map to mark their spot. "Probably enough for today, though, huh? Let's get outta here before the cyclone thingy comes back."

Her head tilts, arms folding. “Why is that bad to admit?” she challenges, curious as to why he shies from it. “If we’re in agreement… it just means we can get better at all this, y’know?”[break][break]
It’s an opportunity to grow. At least she thinks so anyway. Calla wouldn’t have originally considered adventuring and exploring to be her thing. But maybe she’s been wrong this whole time.[break][break]
When he moves closer, Cal leans into his side and lets out another relieved sigh. For a moment, they can catch their breath.[break][break]
“Agreed. Do you have it handy? I can help.” Fishing in her pocket, she finds a red sharpie–holding it up to wiggle in front of his nose.
