And whatever beast that was beginning to rise beneath the surface is left for King to handle. Emma doesn't even bother to gather up her chair.

But being alone and staying alone was all she's ever known. People left, people died, people were never there at all.

Life went on.

Was he not the same? A lonely man with nothing left to live for but the rage and hatred burning in his belly?

Why was he even here? Shouting at her with such ferocity, so desperate to reach her?

What did he want from her?

Her voice is even, kept under control- because control is all she knows. He, on the other hand, is a blistering heat, an unfathomable rage. At some point, she realizes that he isn't talking to her, he's talking at her, through her, to the other side. He was talking to the person he thought he could see, the person that she wouldn't let herself see.[break][break]

Emma was an amalgamation of pain, of rage, of hate- more specifically, hate for herself.[break][break]

She'd seen plenty of men and women like him, too. People who carried the world on their shoulders and expected to have their boots kissed for it. People who gasped in horror when their accomplishments meant nothing when it all caught fire.[break][break]
