A eerie melody filled both Anahel and Noivern's ears. While the girl only felt mild discomfort, Noivern shuddered and reeled back in response.[break][break]
"Damn it." She muttered to herself, realizing what the Altaria just did.[break][break]
Obviously, this man had no intention of fighting back. They wanted to withdraw and ensure their own safety.[break][break]
Noivern only had so much left in her, but there was still a chance of finishing this before the two were forced to land.[break][break]
One last Dragon Pulse was sent at the escaping Altari.[break][break]
Whether or not this finished the job, Anahel would begin making preparations to disengage and return to the ground.

"About what I expected," Anahel said dismissively. "Enjoy watching little girls do your job for you?"[break][break]
In contrast to the tension between the two trainers, Parasect and Kirlia seemed to be getting along fairly well. The psychic type smiled and bowed their head as she grabbed the fragment from her new friend.[break][break]
Anahel bent down and retrieved the crystal shard. It really was a beauty.[break][break]
"What do you think?" The girl held the fragment to Elijah's face.[break][break]
Despite their rotten attitude, the man has been in Rocket for some time. Anahel figured he would have some input.[break][break]
While this went on, Kirlia reached her hand out to high-five her shroomy buddy on a job well done.

The two attacks met. A struggle could be seen between the two forces. It created a light so bright that it blinded Anahel.[break][break]
An explosion blew from between Moss and Anahel, pushing Noivern back. A cloud of smoke filled the space around them.[break][break]
Anahel tugged on her dragon, directing it to attack through the fog of war.[break][break]
Using its echo location, Noivern was able to target and fire Dragon Pulse at the enemy Altaria.[break][break]
"End this Noivern."

Why did Anahel recognize that voice?[break][break]
Turning, her eyes locked onto the overly enthused news reporter from the beach. What was her name again? The memory was stored away as an annoyance from her day off, nothing more.[break][break]
She did not have much time to ponder on this. The woman was quick to strike up a conversation. Anahel had to get into character.[break][break]
"Oh, hey!" She responded with a gentle hand wave. Her face formed a soft smile, as she approached the older blonde. "I hope all has been well."[break][break]
It was here when Sierra inquired on who the man next to her was.[break][break]
"Him?" Anahel knew the cover story, but figured she was better off going deeper into her persona. Reaffirm that she was a shy, unsuspecting student.[break][break]
"Uh, he is..." She said pressing her fingers together. Her head began to move downward, as if she was trying to avoid eye contact. "A friend... Yeah, just a friend." Her bashful way of talking seemed to indicate she was flustered by the question. "We met in Slateport a little while back."[break][break]
I want to vomit.[break][break]
Thankfully, the embarrassment she felt from this performance was temporary. It would soon pass upon their departure, or at least... so she thought.[break][break]
Finding out about the current situation led to the woman begging to ride with the pair.[break][break]
Anahel wished they did not have to keep up appearances. She missed the Rocket version of Zev more than ever at this moment.[break][break]
"Fun," Anahel said as she clapped her hands together. A bright smile matched the tone of her words. "This gives us a chance to catch up!"[break][break]
Hoping into the middle seat of the carriage, Anahel turned to the woman. "You said you were a news reporter, right? That sounds so exciting. What kind of stories do you do?"

The Atlaria dove downward in an attempt to make a get away.[break][break]
Anahel heard them shout, but didn't care for much of what they said. They obviously were not Rocket, and thats all she needed to know.[break][break]
"Noivern," she shouted to her dragon.[break][break]
The two dove after the enemy, firing a Thunderbolt at the trainer riding the bird.

The mission was a simple. Zev and Anahel were there incase unwanted guest decided to appear, but nothing  happened. The two monitored the operation for hours. It was honestly mind numbing.[break][break]
Anahel was ready to return home. Despite being a Rocket member, she still had work to do for University. With the frequency of missions as of late, the girl started to fall behind in her studies. Not that it really mattered... but something about slacking off in her classes felt wrong.[break][break]
Upon hearing the news about the sick pokèmon, Zev expressed concern regarding the illness. The switch had been flipped. Seeing the man behave in this way was always a shock to the girl. It was the only time Zev would break away from his typical disconnected way of speaking. He even smiled, something Anahel had never seen from him. Dimples formed around his mouth as he spoke.[break][break]
Cute, she thought to herself.[break][break]
The girl avoided getting involved in the conversation. Preferring to lurk in the background, she let her higher up handle the talking.[break][break]
Luckily, a solution was found rather quickly. Zev turned to her, exclaiming how good the news was.[break][break]
Anahel's face turned red. She knew it was an act, but this was the first time the man called her by a shortened form of her name.[break][break]
"Y-yes," she said awkwardly. Whether the stutter was part of a persona or she really was that flustered, no one would know.[break][break]
While the Drifblim was getting set up, Anahel returned to her usual way of talking. "Drifblim? How long do you think this will take?"

Noivern followed through with their tackle, pushing the Altaria onto the ground. Standing on top of the bird, the purple pokèmon charged up a Dragon Pulse and fired it point blank at their blue counterpart.[break][break]
Anahel had her gun stolen by the enemy Rotom.[break][break] Jumping back, she threw a pokèball down releasing Gardevoir.[break][break]
"Gard–" The girl's command was interrupted by the boy's attempt of disposing the gun. He kicked it away, causing it to fire off into the darkness. Anahel watched him flinch, as a Pacharisu fell out of a nearby tree.[break][break]
...[break][break]
All tension was evaporated by the bumpkins antics.[break][break]
"You..." She struggled to find the words that would properly convey how much of an idiot he was.[break][break]
Retuning to the situation at hand, Anahel shouted. "Gardevoir!"[break][break]
The psychic jumped forward releasing Moon Blast at the Rotom. Anahel, drawing her knife, lunged for Moss. Swiping the blade at his throat.[break][break]
The banging in the truck reached its climax. The previously sleeping Runerigus collected itself and menacingly stood behind the Buizel. They were visibly upset their nap was interrupted.

✦ Poke-Trafficking Mission

The girl intently examined the glowing rocks.[break][break]
"They are like nothing I've seen before." Anahel tapped her finger on her chin, pondering on what they should do. "We are here to collect information, but bringing a sample back for HQ would be ideal."[break][break]
Now, how should she accomplish this?[break][break]
"Kirlia," she said in an authoritative tone. "Break off a part of this."[break][break]
The pokèmon nodded her head before using Psychic to lift a rock.[break][break]
Smashing it into the side of the crystal, the girl hopped a chunk would break off. The sooner they got this sample, the faster they could leave.

And with that it was finally over. The two said their good-byes, and Anahel began her exit. Despite all the time wasted here, she still had most of her day off left to herself. It could've been worse.[break][break]
Then, the worst possible thing happened. Sierra followed after her.[break][break]
"OH. MY. GOD."[break][break]
The woman asked if she could tag along, saying she had been wanting to visit the city. Anahel began to wonder if this person had some sort of motive. Was she trying to get something out of this, or was she really just that lonely?[break][break]
"I'm visiting my University. I need to pick up my books," Anahel said with an awkward tone. "I start next week."[break][break]
Normally someone would not be able to enroll this late into the semester, but luckily her connection at Rocket gave her some wiggle room regarding it.[break][break]
"Super boring stuff. I don't expect you to come with me, if you don't want to."[break][break]
She isn't going to take the hint. Is she?

"I'm glad you understand," Anahel said bowing her head.[break][break]
Surskit scurried back to the girl, sensing the uncomfortable inner voice. He began to scratch at her legs. His eyes pleaded to be picked up.[break][break]
"Here you go." Ana smiled as she picked up her little bug.[break][break]
Sierra followed up by offering to help the girl explore other ways of interacting with pokèmon.[break][break]
If only she knew.[break][break]
Her pokèmon were thoroughly trained to act swiftly in high intensity situations. Most did not need commands. They moved accordingly to accomplish whatever hurdle was presented their way.[break][break]
This wasn't to say that her pokèmon were simply tools to her. It also would not to be accurate to say she owned them.[break][break]
They were like minded individuals who aligned themselves through shared goals, and needs. Their relationships were reciprocal, giving back to one what the other takes. This is something other people could not understand, least this is what Anahel thought. Using pokèmon for sport and glory was a disgusting practice.[break][break]
"Oh, well actually..." Quick. Anahel think. You are so close. "I have some business to attend to in the city over." This was not totally inaccurate. The girl needed to visit the University to pick up a few things.[break][break]
"It was a pleasure to meet you, Miss Sierra."[break][break]
The girl smiled and waved as she began to turn away, attempting to make her leave.

"Oh, I don't–" Anahel's response was cut off by yet another pokèmon poking their head.[break][break]
Sierra, just as enthusiastic as before, exclaimed how adorable the little Totodile was. Goomy matched her excitement. The two were definitely meant for each other.[break][break]
A cold sweat appeared on Anahel's face. Was she ever going to be free?[break][break]
"Ah yes," the girl said in response to Sierra's declaration of Tododile's cuteness. She forced a smile and clapped her hands together. "Very cute! Good job!"[break][break]
Someone kill me.[break][break]
Sierra returned to discussing Ana's newly caught Kingdra. Much of the information was fundamental. Any trainer who wasn't aware of these details were doomed to die in real combat. It was actually strange to hear someone discuss pokèmon battles so casually. Is this how people normally are? [break][break]
"Oh, you see..." Anahel wanted to end this conversation with the battle eccentric woman. "I don't really battle," she said waving her hands embarrassingly. "It's all a bit too intense for me."

Once again, Anahel heard a noise.[break][break]
The girl stopped. Turning her head, the source seemed to be coming from the alley next to her.[break][break]
It was hard to make out what was in the darkness. A figure could be seen, but it was impossible to tell exactly what it was. Ana leaned forward to get a better look.[break][break]
The sound stopped. Silence returned to the desolate outskirts.[break][break]
Ana, took another step forward. Reaching for the pokèball attached to her waist, a pair of glowing red eyes pierced through the abyss.[break][break]
"Gardevoir!" She shouted, releasing her pokèmon just as the red eyes darted forward.[break][break]
It happened so fast. If one were to blink they would have missed it.[break][break]
A Houndoom lunged towards Anahel. Their teeth wrapped around the arm of Gardevoir. It was only by the grace of the psychic's quick reactions that the girl wasn't grabbed by the beast.[break][break]
The pokèmon released their grip before jumping back. Growling at the two, they held their ground with the intent to strike again.[break][break]
Gardevoir, ready to protect her trainer, prepared to continue to the fight–however, Anahel reached her arm out.[break][break]
"Stop."[break][break]
The girl began to slowly walk towards the vicious beast. With each step, Houndoom growled more and more. The aggression climaxing with violent cries.[break][break]
Anahel saw blood dripping from the side of the its torso. Their ribs extruded from its abdominal. This pokèmon was in no condition to fight. It was on its last legs. Fighting purely out of desperation.[break][break]
"Hey..."[break][break]
Growling once again, Houndoom pounced on the girl. Gardevoir dashed forward, only to be stopped once again by her trainer.[break][break]
"Gardevoir, I said stop."[break][break]
The dark type stood on top of Anahel. Its jaw gripped around the girl's arm, but it did not hurt. A bite this weak could barely break skin.[break][break]
"It's okay..." She said softly. "I know you're scared."[break][break]
Letting go of its grip, Houndoom looked down into Anahel's eyes. Fear. Hunger. Pain. All these emotions could be felt through their red gaze.[break][break]
The girl went to cress her hand on its face, but Houndoom jolted their head back.[break][break]
"I'm not going to hurt you," she said reaching out again.[break][break]
The pokèmon accepted her hand. Closing its eyes, it exhaled, giving up on hiding his fatigue.[break][break]
"You are alone, aren't you? I know how it feels..." Anahel called for Gardevoir, commanding her to use Life Dew.[break][break]
Nodding her head, the psychic released glowing blue water. The liquid wrapped itself around Houndoom, partially healing its wounds.[break][break]
Putting both hands on the pokèmon's head, Anahel pressed her forehead to his.[break][break]
"You don't have to be afraid anymore," she said reaching for an empty pokèball. "Come with us."[break][break]
The pokèmon pressed its head further into Anahel. [break][break]
With a flash of light, the weight of the Houndoom disappeared. The ball did not shake, nor struggle. It set soundly as if whatever inside was fast asleep.[break][break]
Anahel stood up. Gardevoir gave a look, but did not directly question her actions.[break][break]
"What can I say? I have a soft spot for those casted away by the world." Exhaling, she turned back to the street, before returning Gardevoir to her ball.[break][break]
"Let's go."

Anahel continued walking through the desolate streets. Not a soul in sight.[break][break]
The girl thought she heard something, but upon looking there was nothing there. She didn't care enough to inspect further.[break][break]
Shaking her head, Ana moved on.
