“Mercy,” he cackled as Ollie decided to get on the Raikou (hello Josh Devlin) and so, by process of elimination he chose the Suicune.

“Oh, you did?” he hummed as he waited for the ride to get going. “I know you told me you have many siblings, but exactly how many… you didn’t specify I think, you just said ‘a lot’ so I just went with it!”

And aww, the mental image of… a younger Eva Morales, being under the height limit? Wasn’t that cute.

“Which rides did you end up going on? I bet she wanted to go on the big, scary ones.”

Giving the Articuno plushie another stare, he had to resist the urge to roll his eyes so openly.

“You know what, funny story—but I’ll tell you later.”

In the end, he ended up buying both the Articuno and an Yveltal plushie (the bacon bird) because of the inside joke…

Now that they were back towards the middle of the fairgrounds, he looked around—the explosion of color was literally everywhere.

“We kinda… oh, who am I kidding, we were so fucking grounded for the rest of the summer… and the summer after that,” he continued, sinking to his knees now that he was unable to control the noise that escaped him.

Now that they’d wandered over to the Joyland pop-up souvenir booths, he had to resist the urge to roll his eyes because… there was an equally-tiny Articuno plushie there, too.

He’d already made his prize choice—hilariously, a Voltorb plush toy—before holding it in one hand and continuing with the tale.

“He actually thought it was just some random ol’ beach ball, so he asked me to help him kick it… and then it kind of went… flying towards one of the yachts.”

He didn’t need to fill in the blanks as to what happened next. While not necessarily a totally destroyed yacht, it did cause some mayhem in which they had to make a quick-ass getaway before they got scalped alive!

And now he belatedly realized just how much stuff he’d gotten from diving. Wasn’t it just like last year; only he’d missed a few days because of emergencies?

“Hmm,” he mused as he extinguished the cigarette he had with him before disposing of it properly—and then going for today’s dip in the murky surf.

What waited for him down there today, though?

The moment the sudden microburst of wind came crashing down upon the small ship, surprised shouts and yelling cut through the unnatural phenomena, and one of the poachers actually took the rifle and reloaded it before taking aim at the Staravia that was causing the problem…

…only for a hulking blue beast of a Metang to ‘rise’ from the waters and reveal Lars, in all his drenched Alto Marean glory, jumping towards the deck in a tackle attempt!

“Flank them!” he shouted from his airborne position; and the Metang would offer Ollie a lift from the water via Telekinesis to get him on the ship as well, before they erupted into fighting across the top deck.

The panic began setting in the moment the crew realized that at least one of the Rangers that was on the ship was from Alto Mare (joke’s on them) and turned their attention towards him.

“I got this!” he shouted, reverting back to his previous ‘mode’—which was basically handling illegal poachers in the best way they did back there: an all-out brawl.

(Of course he wasn’t the one to throw the first punch, it was one of the two that held the Basculin lure trap that did!)

He won, but just barely. Hell, even the staffer in charge of the booth couldn’t hold their laughter in at the sight.

“And by just a tiny margin, congratulations,” they mentioned, before gesturing to him to get a prize—but he would do that later.

“Funny you ask that,” he turned back to face his best friend, before this unreadable smirk flashed across his face yet again, “…but you know what? I’ll save that for a later time.”

And with that, was a wink.

As for him, younger?

“Oh, you wouldn’t believe the shit me and my brother claude anderson were up to back then…” he trailed off, hoping the other would nibble.

“Let’s just say it involved our old family yacht back… back there, and a Voltorb,” he added on; still unable to believe he’d actually won in a game of strength of all things.

Seeing the familiar Greninja approach, the treat of an ice cream is much appreciated—and the flavor in it to boot was mint chocolate chip. Tasty.

However, fact of the matter was that the person that approached him was…

“Wait. Wait, hold up,” he backtracked, his mind doing a 360 spin and successfully overheating.

“What happened to your hair? And you sound… older? Like. I could fucking swear you didn’t sound like that the last time we met!” he blinked.

This was a lot to take in, so after he calmed himself down with a bite of the ice cream from the cone he was holding, he had to do another double-take.

“And since when did you have a beard?!” he added on, the confusion piling up higher than ever.

He was… to be fair he was already prepared for a battle, to see if the Weather Trio-damned ‘presence’ in the back of his head would show up or at least drop the mic, so imagine his shock when he realized what they were going to be doing.

“Won’t… won’t the people around here get too suspicious with you driving the truck around? Heavily-tinted windows too, to boot.”

“Wait, doesn’t staying for a number of years in Hoenn while working grant you that?” he mused, curious. Unlike his companion for the day, he was… well, for lack of a better term he was technically half-Hoennian, having been born here; although he did have Alto Marean citizenship by blood thanks to his mother.

“Or did I miss something in all the red tape?” he chuckled as he followed the other through the long ‘maze’ in order to get to the Ferris wheel proper.

And of course, in a fit of hilarious irony, he would choose the purple-colored cab before following him in and making sure the cab door was securely locked, and away they went!

Never mind if the climb was slow, but that was the point of riding the Ferris wheel—to enjoy the view.

“Not even her fighting spirit burned hot enough in the face of that frigid wind when the ice wall was smashed down. We basically got a screaming screech to the face, and I had to get her out of there because the way the wind washed over the both of us. Well, you know how I’m normally not affected by the cold, but she is?”

He paused for a few moments.

“…we were both affected, though mine was to a lesser extent. My… my cold immunity isn’t exactly fully there unlike most times, if you catch my drift.”

And of course he was proud of his cousin dearest. Blood was definitely thicker than ice water, after all.

He had to swallow down a gulp of air because holy shit on a stick, this was bad! He was about to crack open like an egg when he realized that Ollie had gone right prodded him in the chest.

“R-right…” he continued nervously, approaching the wall of ice and tentatively touching his right hand against it.

For the first time in a long time…

He felt cold.

“…shit.”

He nodded quietly at the ‘waterproof’ quip, then belatedly realized why he had the thing in the first place: wasn’t this some kind of a test to show what he knew from Alto Mare, to bring back and share it with the Hoenn branch of the Rangers?

Unfortunately, he would give the other a grim nod after the sound of the gunshot. This time, more conversation came from the direction of the boat.

“Do ye have the Basculin bait ready?”

“A’course I’ do, ya think I’m stupid?”

The sound of clinking, then crashing chains before the muffled yelps of Basculin shook the air.

He then held up one hand then gestured at him before pointing right; before he would raise his other hand, point to himself and then point in the other direction before bringing his hands together in a ‘closing’ gesture.

Basically, a surprise attack, to catch them in the act.

He then said one word very quietly, once the sound of soft splashing hit the water.

“Go.”
