“YEAH, YOU!” He blurted back at her. There hadn’t been a litany of royally pissed combee on his side of the meadow, after all. “Sorry, sorry!” Benji quickly amended, despite his panic. “I’m nice, I swear I am!”[break][break]
He just had to get to Milo. He’d take more stings if he had to. The berry pink furret blended with the wild flowers. “Huh?” he only partially heard the young woman going on shouting, and his fingers closed around the furret’s wiggly body just as he felt a sharp backward yank at his shirt collar.[break][break]
Benji jerked back with a yelp. “Ah–hey!”[breka][break]
The buzzing intensified, and had he been paying attention, he would’ve noticed that in his fumbling, he’d hit ‘record’ on his phone camera.[break][break]
Feeling his shirt released, he took a step forward and stumbled, but he got the memo as he caught himself. Milo looped around his head, muffling the sound of the ]BOOMBURST as his own hands cuffed over the ferret’s much more sensitive ears.

“Of course,” he said with a smile, nodding at the girl as some of the urgency faded the longer the little minccino was subjected to Mimi’s AROMATHERAPY. “She’ll be back on her feet in no time.” Stepping away, he grabbed an antidote, waiting for the pokemon to rouse just enough to give her the medication.[break][break]
She was still a bit bleary and dazed, after all.[break][break]
Benji hummed in thought, brows still furrowed as he mulled over her words. “I wonder if it’s connected with the uptick in those poison chain..things..” Admittedly, he didn’t know much about it. Just the bits and pieces he’d heard, and then the things he’d encountered on his last few daily walks.[break][break]
He spoke as he turned back toward the minccino. “Y’know, there’s been all those reports of pokemon with far more toxicity causing problems all over Hoenn? I’m starting to wonder if they’ve had a more profound effect on the environment.” He nodded at the berry. “Like those. It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s got some residual poisoning.”[break][break]
Or maybe it was just a berry toxic to smaller pokemon–he’d have to double check his handbook to rule that out, though.[break][break]
“Your pawmo looks awful sad, though.” Stooping, he scooped the lil guy up–thinking that it was worry as well. “Hammy, right?” Benji turned toward the little bed so that the rodent could see his buddy. “See? She’s okay, just needs some rest.”

[attr="class","textbody"]Everything happened so quickly, it was hard to follow the chain of events as they unrolled. His hands reached out to steady her, but she caught herself with the table. But not before the candle dropped from her grasp, of course.[break][break]
Benji winced at the sight of it cracking against the ground, though it made no loud noise.[break][break]
Before he could say anything, she was apologizing to the owner and he felt terrible for the accident. Grimace still on his face, he peered down at the woman. She was cute, despite the mortification that was undoubtedly written across his face as much as it was hers.[break][break]
Benjamin, you clumsy idiot.[break][break]
He fixed his glasses, adjusting them on his nose with an awkward sort of fidgeting that practically indicated the precursor to more babbling. “Oh, good– I mean, not that I’m glad for the mistake, just that you’re alright. I’m kind of a giant in these little booths.” A realization brightened the hazel brown of his eyes. “But like, a gentle giant! Er, usually..”[break][break]
Embarrassed heat flushed up the back of his neck, and he was sure that his cheeks had started to darken with color the more he went on. His glance dropped to the broken candle in her hands, then then lifted back to her face. “I can pay for that,” he said with a sigh, shoulders drooping as he felt the telltale tinge of guilt.[break][break]
“It would’ve been all in one piece if I hadn’t bumped into you, after all.”

“Hello!” Brown eyes fall to the gogoat–notable delight on his face as he greets both the pokemon and its trainer.[break][break]
Benji’s tone is noticeably brighter and much more cheerful when Elijah deigns to open the door. “House call” He smiles, broad and toothy to contrast against the flat frown on his opposite’s face.[break][break]
He lifts his travel bag in reference and gives it a little shake. On his shoulder, Marnie echoes his cheer.[break][break]
See, the thing is this:[break][break]
Benji isn’t always the brightest bulb out there, but he does know that with…er, difficult regulars he pays visits to, it’s good to use endearments where he can. And try as he might, Ben simply cannot crack elijah gardner’s curmudgeonly exterior on his own.[break][break]
So bringing the oddish is definitely a bit more design than one might expect of the doc.[break][break]
“You missed your last appointment.” He pauses, frowning, but he isn’t disheartened for long–that smile snaps back like a boomerang. “and the one before that actually. If I didn’t know any better, Elijah, I’d say you were avoiding us!”

[attr="class","textbody"]Did anything beat a sunny day at a craft fair? Benji thought not. He'd even made the trip out to Lilycove just for this one. The whole thing got him dreaming a bit. Whimsical thoughts that maybe he could enroll in one the next time he came across one. Just to sell some pastries he'd been experimenting with.[break][break]

But that would also mean baking enough treats to last.[break][break]

Tall and broad as he was, he felt a little cramped stepping into a few of the booths with lower roofs. His head ducked as he stepped into one, posture slouching as he peered down at the rows of artisanal soaps and soy candles neatly lined up on tiered shelves.[break][break]

"Check it, Milo! These ones are made with gogoat milk." He pointed at a particular set of soaps in different colors, marked by the scented oils included in each. His furret trilled, pink-tipped tail swishing where his long body was draped over Ben's shoulder.[break][break]

"Do you think they have a ylang ylang one..." His words were muttered as he shuffled in a semi-circle, leaned forward to peer and squint at the labels. His glasses slid down his nose slightly and he pushed them back up before giving up and pushing them up to his forehead. As if that would somehow make his sight better and not worse.[break][break]

He continued his little shuffle dance, unaware of anyone but the vendor in the booth - that was, until he practically bodychecked someone much smaller. "Ah!" Benji startled, the jostling knocking his glasses back down, askew. But Benji didn't pay any attention to that. Instead, he blinked rapidly, hazel eyes wide. "Are you alright? I am so sorry, I should've been paying better attention to where I was stepping."

As they walked along, Bao suddenly stopped short. The little dog erupting in a series of yips that he likely thought were intimidating, but were actually nothing but sort of adorable. Benji paused, head tilting as he looked for the cause of the fidough's outburst.[break][break]

"Oh! Sewaddle." Stooping, he unclipped the leash from Bao's collar. "Help me catch it." Bao needed no more instruction. He sprung forward with a volley of excited barks as he PLAYED ROUGH with the bug until it was in the open for Benji to toss a pokeball at it.

“Nice ‘n peaceful..” Ben let out a pleased sigh as he walked along the route. Ahead of him, Bao scampered along—tethered by the purple leash clipped to his collar. Occasionally, the fidough yippee at little birds as they scattered from the brush.[break][break]

All in all, it was a calm, quiet morning walk. Much better than their walk at the weather station. Or the desert stretch. Or the night market.[break][break]

Carefully, he lifted the minccino and carried her to a nearby examining table. He laid her on the cushion, frowning as he failed to garner much reaction from the little pokemon. It was likely because her body was so tiny, it didn’t take much for the toxin to spread quickly. “Mimi,” he called quietly, summoning the spinning floette back to his side. “Help draw the poison out.”[break][break]
The floette gave another little twirl on her flower stem, and began to release a soft, healing scent into the air around the mincinno. “The AROMATHERAPY should help,” Benji said, glancing at the girl again and allowing his careful smile to return. “But we’ll give her some medicine as well. It looks like she got a pretty nasty kickback from whatever it was.”[break][break]
As Alethea Ivanova went on to explain, Benji listened, occasionally nodding thoughtfully. “I wonder..” Surely a spelon berry that was just rotten wouldn’t have caused all this. “It would be useful to see..” he agreed, though there wasn’t much to be done about that. He had just turned back to the minccino—pleased to note that some of the distress in her unconscious expression had begun to ease, when a tug at his pantleg caught his attention.[break][break]
“What’s this?” Stooping down to the pawmo, he took the offered berry. “Well, would ya lookit that?” His free hand reached to pat the little rodent on the head. “Good job, buddy. This’ll help a lot.” He turned it over in his hands, noting the particular vibrancy of the purple.[break][break]
“Where did you find these?”

Why were we shouting?[break][break]
Panic climbed naturally, the more he got poked and the more he tried to figure out what was going on. Normally, he was a calmer sorta person, but something about being thrown into the moment made him feed in to the frantic edge. His bespectacled eyes swiveled to the toxatricity again, but it was distracted and definitely not the one jabbing him like he’d initially thought.[break][break]
“The bees?” He questioned, just before he felt another jab—this time on his arm. “Yeowch!” Benji swatted again, and that time he spied the angry combee buzzing away. “What’d you do to make them mad?” he squawked. Or maybe he made them mad? Either way, rather than try to shield his face, he tried to bend and scoop up his furret, who was definitely now clueless in the warpath, with happily twitching ears as he sniffed at a daisy.

"Lookit that, Marnie! Ya fit!" he teased as he plopped the little oddish down in one of the divots in the incubator. Marnie cooed, her amusement showing in the way the fronds at the top of her head rustled and curled like new ferns.[break][break]

Benji scooped the little oddish up again, and let her hunker down on a broad shoulder instead. "Though I wager, some'a these eggs are gonna be bigger than you." He poked at one of her little footies as he finished up flicking the switches that would bring the incubator to life with a soft glow. "Think we'll only need a couple rows..."[break][break]

Down the line they went, prepping the holding nests to make sure they were adequately warmed for the eggs that would soon inhabit them. Occasionally, he'd scribble a note on a clipboard, flipping to a new chart for each machine.[break][break]

While he was always happy to collaborate with the local rangers, it was sort of a shame they had to displace so many wild eggs, wasn't it? He'd seen firsthand some of the wild things that had been happening lately - much as he tried to keep himself out of trouble.[break][break]

The recent toxicity that had seeped into the natural environment, though, unfortunately could not be ignored. And eggs like the lot he was due to receive any minute now were helpless victims from those toxins.
