a disconcerted smile at the puzzling answer she receives. they were either in new mauville to look at the old generator or not; there's not much gray ground there. still, she's far too trusting to suspect the pair of anything that could put any laws in question, so she lets them enter the room without complaints.

"in training! soon to be a mechatronics engineer," she corrects quickly. that's kind of a misleading claim, though —she supposes— so again she rushes to add, "in a few years."

well, putting it that way feels a bit discouraging. she flushes a little at the thought. if she works hard, she's certain she could graduate early just like @leonardo.

another smile is met with one in kind and, though there is plenty of room, rhian feels a little overwhelmed. maybe it's the sight of the huge arcanine at the door, or maybe it's the fact both newcomers are looking at her and she's not used to so much attention (it triggers bad memories). she's trembling a little when she speaks up again.

"s-so, as you can see, the generator won't be causing any more trouble. i haven't checked the outer wiring yet, but the ladies up in mauville hills shouldn't have more complaints about weird noises coming from here in the middle of the night."

to the slurpuff and sylveon walking by her side. "what do you say, ladies? should we take the road up the hill, or walk around this lake?"

she gets conflicting answers: the sylveon wants to see the rest of the safari zone from the top of the hill, it seems, while the slurpuff would like to waddle in the water. rhian hums, pondering. the truth is she'd love to indulge both of her new friends, but she's pretty tired and pretty sure her time in the safari is almost up.

"how about this? since the lake is just around the corner, we'll spend some time there first," she proposes, "and after resting a bit, we'll see if we can squeeze in a quick visit to the hill." looking at the sylveon's seemingly disappointed expression, she adds, "if anything, i can always take you to a much bigger mountain next time. what do you say?"

it's how the small party finds themselves sitting by the water's edge. rhian sits with the sylveon's head resting on her lap, while the slurpuff pokes its hand inside the water, entertaining herself making ripples on the surface. a couple fish join them, attracted by the sudden movement, including a large pink fish. they all run away when the slurpuff comes threateningly close to kiss them (or eat them; debatable matter).

up, grandt," she calls out to her klefki. her azumarill is recalled with a whispered "thank you, boy, you did great," and in his stead comes rhian's blissey.

that greets them is quite grim.

so far, rhian had seen a sprained ankle, a couple minor wounds, a dehydrated marshtomp. in contrast, the pikachu's burn marks and coughing hint of a fire, but the additional injuries complete the puzzle and tell the rest of the tale: this is the result of an

all that crosses her mind is an appalled that's awful, but she can't exactly say that—not to the boy's face—so she gulps down her horror and nods at the man.

while their pokémon join efforts to heal the pikachu, rhian kneels down to the boy's height. she offers him a friendly smile. "don't worry, your pikachu will be all better soon. just hang in there, okay?" the boy's eyes follow her, but stare back emptily. rhian feels herself tear up. he can't hear her. it takes all of her emotional strength to instead reach for the pen hanging on her pocket and write her message on her small notebook.

it's okay now. you're both safe.

"that poor boy," she speaks up after he's moved on to reunite with his parents and they've taken him for a checkup, "my heart goes out to him." his pikachu would need further treatment to recover from the burn marks, but his hearing? that would require technology they currently didn't have.

turning to the man, she adds, "thanks for helping back there. i don't know if cherub's
heal pulse
would have been enough."

she's qualified

for this job, technically. rhian didn't appreciate her great aunt volunteering her to come give the generator a look without her consent, of course, but she supposes the old woman did it out of pride in her brother's grandchildren, if not her own progeny. she can't really fault her for that.

"looks like it's properly turned off now," the blonde muses. though at a quick glance it may look like she's speaking to herself, her interlocutor is actually the rotom currently powering up the flashlight in her hand. "let's double check the wires, and then we can head home."

when she hears the loud screech of the main entrance opening and the subsequent whoosh in the air, rhian can't help jumping back in surprise. temporarily putting aside the task at hand, she pokes her head through a second door, the one leading up to the generator room, and offers the two men outside a timid smile.

returns to her side, there's a huge grin plastered on her face. rhian giggles at the sight. she is glad that her blissey had finally gotten what she so desperately wanted, despite it all, and that her bliss is so great she is able to demonstrate it this way.

she's not paying too much attention to the clefairy waddling over in search for food, or to the nidorina hidden behind some bushes, also hungry but evidently not as hungry as the clefairy.

rhian stands on tiptoes, scanning the path ahead. the berry couple's house is still far from where they stand. she can barely see its colorful roof in the distance. a quick look at her pokénav reveals that it's almost the time she'd initially planned for her arrival, and she frowns.

being behind schedule on a leisure visit isn't too bad. however, it's sure to worry her boyfriend if she doesn't notify him. after making certain that her walking companion is still busy with the clefairy, she makes a quick call to let him know she'd be maybe half an hour late.

rhian waits for the man to catch up with a smile. "made a couple friends today, hm? must be a good day," she muses. rhian may not have caught any new pokémon herself, but the thought doesn't bother her. her reason to be here is another altogether, and besides, she's content with her few but close team members.

she tries to hide under her long curls—it doesn't work that well, what with them being tied into a pair of too high ponytails. it's an attempt, at least.

"i saw this in class just the other day, so it was still fresh on my mind," she explains, following her klefki's trail.

the bump on the wall is small. rhian would have no doubt ran right past it, if not for the pokémon pointing at the exact spot. it being a bump on a glass wall makes it an odd sight.

in order to bend glass, incredibly high temperatures were needed. in fact, shattering glass would have resulted way easier. so who would have done this?

rejected twice

now, the blissey is at an odd moment in life. she's torn between wanting to be sad and finding the mere idea too preposterous. how could she be sad, if her trainer depended on her not to be? how could she be sad, when anyone else could be in need any moment now? a gentle pat on the head distracts her from her inner monologue.

rhian smiles at her sweet, selfless pokémon. "don't be sad, cherub. just having you around makes me happy."

[break][break]

though still somewhat butthurt and the double rejections, the blissey manages to smile back—but, with the group being attacked once again, the heartwarming moment is cut short. the blissey steps in front of her trainer, willing to protect her even if it cost her own harm. her pink arms go up and a thin, translucent veil envelops all of them. she's using

light screen

to reduce any potential damage.

and then, when the battle is finally over, the blissey approaches the man and his pokémon once more, offering not an egg from her pouch this time, but two arms raised up and the two bright spheres forming underneath. this time, they wouldn't get away without her healing.

rhian simply stands back to watch the scene, a knowing smile on her face. "i do think she deserves it," she calls from where she stands.

fate. that

was a rather poetic way to put this situation. pearly eyes sparkle at the idea.

with slateport lost to team rocket, lilycove was the largest remaining hub left in the region for the legal workers. it shouldn't have come as that big of a surprise for the two to coincide in the city they lived and worked in, but still rhian likes the idea of calling it fate. it douses their encounter with a touch of magic she's very willing to believe in.

"deal," she nods.

isra is the first to stand, and the hand she extends leaves rhian feeling a little embarrassed at the poor manners she'd been showing so far. "thank you," she says, meekly taking her hand. "and thank you, too, imp." rhian smiles at both of them as she settles back onto the bench.

"you know," she starts, idly dangling her feet where she sat, "i have to admit i don't do too well with ghost pokémon. they scare me so much! there was this one time, when i was younger, my cousin had me go to a haunted mansion to catch him one... i thought i was gonna die throughout the entire ordeal!"

rhian's tale is told with so much emotion, it seems to bleeds through each word. if she closed her eyes, she could almost relive the moment.

"you can imagine how i felt when i was issued an order to inspect another haunted mansion for the league, more recently." at this memory, she laughs. it's not painful like the first. "have you ever felt so mindlessly scared you wished you could just run away from it all, isra?"

her gaze lands on the banette, and suddenly she's reminded of why she had even started talking about this. "it's why it surprised me to see imp behave so nicely in turn."

is the right floor after all. this revelation is both a relief, because she wouldn't be running late on her first day; and a curse. after her embarrassing confusion, she wants to bury herself under the ground, never to be found again.

"yes!" rhian's body goes into attention at the mention of her last name. she's being led through the door and into her new boss' office before she gets a chance to ask for the young lady's own name.

rhian has to fight the urge to poke her head through the door rather than be a normal human being (could you tell she's pretty nervous?) as she mutters a soft "excuse us" to enter the room.

once inside, she is torn between waiting to be presented and presenting herself. she's desperately regretting not having asked someone about common etiquette in these scenarios. in the end, excitement gets the best out of her.

"good morning, mr. lane. my name is rhian mcarthur. i'm excited to start working for the scientist renowned for shedding new light on the fossil revival process!"

honestly, she's tempted to ask for details, but she's painfully aware that she's already talked too much out of turn. she waits.

blessing, rhian turns to issue instructions to her klefki. "remember how you'd distract mom so i could hide at my nono's?" it's a memory from so long ago that rhian herself didn't think she'd remember it. "i want you to do the same. but be careful, this wall isn't ours."

orders received, the klefki approaches the imposing glass walls and produces a light

metal sound

it's a simple play on physics, really, even if back then she didn't know it. sound can break glass. it's a commonly used trope in fiction, that also happens to be scientifically possible. in order to shatter glass, though, the sound waves must be on the right frequency and bear enough power. anything below that simply resonates through and bounces on any imperfections—any weak spots—on its surface.

the low frequency used would likely be impossible for humans to hear. however, pokémon could hear it. as an added bonus, anyone watching out with plans of infiltrating still would also be lured to the signal.

she's only

called for help because of her blissey. rhian knows this, and honestly she can't say she minds. as a lilycove university freshman applying to the hoenn pokémon league's research branch as an assistant, every little thing she did could add to her chances of being accepted into the program.

besides, she was never one to say no to those in need. or to anyone, really; it was kind of a problem.

with the pokémon center filled to the brim with injured pokémon, many other league-owned properties would come to work as makeshift emergency health centers. it is in one of these that the blonde ends up being sent to "volunteer".

despite rhian herself not being trained in first aid (she's sure this will eventually be covered in her training), her blissey has a long history of offering aid to pokémon in need, as well as those in not so much need. confidence in her blissey is all that makes her fight how awkward she's feeling when she asks the next person to come within range, "would you like us to look at your pokémon's health for you?"
