rhian smiles

at her boyfriend's answer. with him around, she feels safe.

their pizza arrives only moments later. although it's frustrating to abandon the couch a second time (they probably should have planned this a little better), rhian does so gladly at the promise of still hot dough and pinap.

luckily, they can take advantage of the interlude to get changed into their sleepwear for extra comfiness.

they eat a slice of pizza each, and then rhian steals a slice of leo's side, before they finally play the movie (leo always complains that her munching is too loud for him to concentrate).

it is everything rhian wanted. she squeals and giggles and hurts with the protagonist, and every time she sneaked a glance at leo, she could see him watching the movie just as attentively as she was.

everyone she knows, the gym leader is one she'd put in her list of least expected to run into all the way in fallarbor town. used as she is to only ever see him on his visits to the research facility, the encounter comes as a bit of a surprise.

then again, bearing the title of gym leader, she supposes he'd be permanently on the lookout for training spots and new pokémon to add to his team.

she smiles, completely oblivious to the second-long change in his countenance. "mr. coin, what a pleasant surprise."

at the inquiry, rhian tilts her bag in his direction, letting him have a peek at the many test tubes laying in neat rows inside. "i'm here to pick up some samples for an experiment," she explains, before returning to a more comfortable position.

it's a little past

noon when she makes it to fallarbor town. the trip itself is comfortable enough, but the waiting time between flights makes rhian wish she'd thought to catch a flying pokémon to help her get around the region. she needs it now more than ever, with her new job taking her literally everywhere for any and every reason imaginable. such are the circumstances of her current struggle with ash-covered mud and grass.

a pair of rain boots get her through a particularly nasty-looking dirt path just outside the town (it's probably not about to rain, but thank arceus she thought to bring them). she glances at her pokémon, a klefki happily levitating by her side, with envy. xerneas saved him the pain of walking or, in this case, dragging feet across ash.

"you sure you don't wanna trade places with me, grandt?"

caught up in her little bubble, she doesn't notice the presence of another person nearby.

the search engine

proves very useful. not only does she confirm that the species is, indeed, solitary by nature. she also learns of their breeding patterns in the wild, and of the many problems scientists had breeding this particular species in captivity throughout the world.

once finished with her preliminary research, she calls her partner's attention. "i have bad news."

rhian hands her pokénav search history to him, before proceeding with her explanation. "in almost all cases in that study, wild pangoros lost their interest in mating once they were captured." she stops to swipe the screen once, showing a different article.

looking at the mess in front of her, she can start to feel the heavy weight of the work ahead of them. "different research centers have found success in artificial insemination, but..."

despite her

inexperience, rhian comes prepared. she's brought lots of sweets: block candies and poffins and jelly beans and even some poké puffs. she looks at her collections of sweets now, and is left with the hard choice of which to use first.

"let's start off with... my favorite, some whipped dream." she places the pink item on a patch of low grass, takes a couple steps back, and waits.

the next time she looks at her strategically placed bait, she finds it's multiplied. instead of the one, she sees two. wait, did i...? doubting her eyes before her memory, she walks closer to it. not only has the whipped dream multiplied, but one of them has also grown in size.

[break][break]

"amazing," she gasps, reaching out to pick the bigger one for closer inspection. she couldn't even begin to explain this phenomenon. "not only its size. its weight has increased exponentially, too," she continues to muse. it's only when the whipped dream twitches in her arms that she realizes it's no longer a thing.

[break][break]

the slurpuff drops to the ground with a soft thud and the rustling of leaves. "oh dear arceus, i'm so sorry. are you okay?" she asks the pokémon.

[break][break]

clearly more interested in the sweet treat than in her, the slurpuff turns back to the whipped dream. rhian crouches down next to it and ventures a hand to its head. seeing that it doesn't shy away, she gives it a gentle pat.

"like it? consider it all yours." as she says this, rhian reaches inside her bag for another treat to offer. a yellow patterned jelly bean this time. "you can also have this one, if you want it."

the girl waits until the slurpuff is satisfied and all done feasting on the sweets before presenting to it one of the safari balls she was issued at the entrance. "do you wanna tag along with me?"

oh...

for a moment, the green-haired woman's wording makes rhian feel like she's intruding on something beyond her comprehension. something ethereal, perhaps, because if there's anyone rhian could apply that word to, it would be to her: elegant in her poise and subtle in her movements.

though initially her plan was to roam the garden and burn out her nerves, the invitation is not lost on her. rhian is happy to take the seat. she beams, the remnant feeling of mortification slowly fading as they leave the poor circumstances of their meeting behind.

"i'm visiting a relative," she answers simply. there's really not much else to it. rhian does put special emphasis on the word relative, though. ever since she was separated from her father three years ago, no one else could be her family.

[break][break]

"and you, miss? do you live here? mauville hills really has the perfect place to take walks in on a daily basis."

[break][break]

a splash and the sound of a chiming bell can be heard nearby. the sound of pokémon playing? rhian knows she saw a little fountain when she first scanned the garden. two lights seemed to glow from within, suggesting the presence of a chinchou. whether this was the same chinchou or a different pokémon altogether, only time would tell.

the audino is the first to pass by them. it stops to stare at them, curious. rather, rhian is certain it's looking not at them as a group but at the pretty lady. can't blame it. shortly after, an azumarill follows, splashing water on ground, grass, and shrubbery alike on its path.

it looks like the audino is in trouble.

"wait right there!" rhian wraps her arms around the blue balloon-shaped pokémon, holding it down while successfully drenching one half of her clothes in the process. "you're not bothering the poor audino, are you?"

rhian's eyes are

wide and attentive as she watches some of the sweetest words she's ever been directed come out of leo's mouth. one by one they're edged into her memory. blonde eyebrows rise and fall to the cadence of his voice, and by the time he's done she can feel the warmth of his breath on her face from how close she is to him.

she closes the distance.

it's a short, gentle kiss. like a single wave crashing on the shore or a kaleidoscope of butterflies set free, her lips dance on his for a fleeting moment. a breath being exchanged. a thread being tied. a promise of a life being shared.

"i love you," she says, and smiles because she means it. rhian smiles because that's how he truly makes her feel. everyday with him means smiles. "i love you."

and though the kiss is over, her feelings —her need to show him how much he means to her— are overflowing. "thank you. for everything." she wraps her arms around his waist, pulling him impossibly close, closer, making good of his earlier request.

"you made my school days bearable, you know? even though you were kind of mean at times. when you left to study abroad..." fluttering tears threaten to fall, but rhian manages to blink them all away. "i'm glad you're back in my life."

little bad about lying to him, even if it is a white lie bound to hurt no one. well, no one but her, if she didn't manage to get her hands on those tickets soon. before she can regret it, though, leo picks her up and sends her squealing at his newfound cheer.

from the air, rhian managed to see the pangoro enclosure the assistant was so adamant on them checking out. with her not being exactly in the best condition to finish the tour, rhian offers her a smile and a pat on the back. "don't worry, we'll go ahead and check on the pangoros."

leo's negativity

is starting to get to her. the young man's not usually like this, of course, only when something really ruffles his feathers— and, considering there's not much that can have that effect on him, she's mostly had it easy dealing with his temper.

however, on those few occasions when he is angry, rhian's learned that leo can be quite insufferable.

she's still learning how to best approach his fits of anger. until she finds a good solution, the best she can do is apply the good old method of trial and error. slowly but surely.

"hey, leo? remember that football match you mentioned being excited for?" her sing-song voice attempts to distract him from his thoughts as they're guided by the assistant towards the pangoro enclosure.

rhian's only interest in the sport had been back in school when leo was the one playing. she's starting to prepare herself mentally for the torturous boredom of what she's about to say. "guess who's got tickets for it."

not rhian; that much she could tell you now. but she would. if it made leo happy, she'd ask one of her rich relatives for the favor. after all, what was enduring an entire evening with them in exchange for leo's happiness?

just say? not realizing she's falling straight into his trap, or maybe realizing it but not caring more than she cares about not being made to watch a horror movie, rhian quickly picks the bowl up from the place on the counter where she left it before her little scene, and rushes back to the tv.

first, she peeks at the screen from beside him. the popcorn bowl serves as cover for her frail eyes from whatever horrible thing leo had picked. a fantasy drama? hm. where is the lie?

once she's confirmed there's nothing scary playing on the tv right now, she places the bowl on the coffee table, somewhere between the opened bag of chips and leo's water, and takes the remote by force.

the concept of

a safari zone is new to her. though she's (now) certain that her home region had a similar protected area, rhian can't exactly go back to it— not with it being so close to kanto. she'd have to make do with her first time being in hoenn.

after a short run-down of how the safari balls worked and how long she had until a warden came to pick her up, rhian is released into the apparent wild.

she scans the entire area with the wide-eyed curiosity of a child. it's almost like a zoo. with little pockets of a bunch of terrains put into one place, it really is kind of like a zoo. unlike a zoo, however, the pokémon roam free here. rhian can't see any fences or cages to restrain them.

better than a zoo, she decides, stepping into the first area.

there are two

not necessarily independent events happening one within a short span of the other.

first, there's the fact that only just dawned on her that she's developed hearing problems. after all, she's pretty sure she heard leonardo vermilion call her cute, which is impossible.

second, she has a venipede rapidly rolling in her direction trying to kill her or worse.

rhian's brain is having a hard time comprehending either of them.

faced with her trainer's indecision, the happiny takes matters into her own hands— or, rather, toes. she can feel the sadness in her trainer even if she can't quite understand most of her words, and it makes almost as good a method of communication as language.

the happiny moves to a side, making sure she's far away enough from her trainer that she wouldn't be harmed from the events of the battle, before she uses

when rhian thinks

of relaxing walks in green areas, she's not exactly thinking of scary encounters with pretty (but still scary) ladies. the greeting comes from a young woman sitting so still on her bench that rhian actually jumps back from the shock with a mortifying "eek!"

it's her own fault, really. for having her mind so high up in the clouds, for not paying closer attention to her surroundings. once she gets a good look at the stranger, a rosy bloom bursts across her face. "i'm so sorry! i didn't see you there, you just scared me so much— i mean. no, i didn't mean to imply you were scary."

"i mean, good evening," she corrects herself with a little bow, or really more of a nod, in an attempt to sound more like a normal person.
