When she makes her request, his reply is immediate: "Of course."[break][break]

Hesitantly, one of the doctors close enough to overhear interjects, "Sir, we'd like to monitor—"[break][break]

Cillian finally tears his eyes from his sister to offer a withering look to the interloper, who for all their medical expertise still doesn't dare to challenge what fury is found there.[break][break]

"I trust you'll sort the discharge paperwork without us."[break][break]

Turning back to Lulu Flint, he offers the ghost of a smile and tilts his head toward the exit. When you're ready, the motion suggests.[break][break]

Cillian doesn't give a damn about the chair. As soon as Tempest had drawn close enough, he'd drawn the other man down into his lap in spite of the seat's groan of protest. His eyes slip closed for a moment as Temp's nails scratch soothing paths along his scalp.[break][break]

Insecure. He hates that word. His lips purse around the thought of it.[break][break]

But Temp isn't wrong. That's what he was.[break][break]

Insecure.[break][break]

"The 'experts' can suck my dick," he says ineloquently, when at last he speaks. He'd opened his eyes when Temp squished his cheeks together, to give him an unimpressed look. "Maybe other people won't help me for the same reasons you would. Maybe they'd just help because I'm on their side and they can't afford to lose me. Same difference to me in the end; s'long as I make it through whatever happens, I don't really care why."[break][break]

A pause, realising how it might come across, softening it with, "But I do appreciate that you'd intervene out of love, and not for selfish reasons."[break][break]

He wonders if there's some kind of jealousy toward his bond with Lugia. Would he feel jealous, were their roles reversed? No, he didn't think so, because, "It's not necessarily a closeness? Avatarship, I mean. I love Lugia," and he stumbles slightly over the words as he says them for the first time aloud, cementing something that's only before been a feeling, "but it's like... it's not because I'm her Avatar. It's because she's saved my life, more than once, and because I've felt her pain, her fear... being her Avatar, it just feels like part of me. Like if you grew a third arm, you'd have to learn how to use it, sure, but it's yours."[break][break]

Of course, that metaphorical arm could be cut off should Lugia so choose, but he tries not to think about that.[break][break]

"I'm sorry we fought, too." He hates fighting. Hates the way his anxieties compound into a certainty that Temp, too, will abandon him. But loves that Temp has always come back. "I shouldn't have been so defensive about it. I think where I was so tired and strained from the mission, I didn't check my tone like I should've." An explanation, rather than an excuse. He's still sorry. "You didn't have all the details. I shouldn't have expected you to be cool with any of it without them."[break][break]

He lets out a slow breath. "I'll get tested again if I start feeling weird, or a few months out. If it makes you feel better. It's just... too soon, right now."[break][break]

He hated feeling like a lab rat.

Cillian's skin crawls as the Okidogi growls discontent. Would they be punished for their inability to measure up?[break][break]

He feels relief when others are yanked up by their chains, instead. He had looked away when their warden had beaten Shred Zeppelin within an inch of his life, but now recognizes the body that hangs limp from its chain.[break][break]

Fury and frustration build within. He wants to help his fellow Rockets, his siblings, but can only watch as those who'd sought to rebel are punished for their sins. Idiots, he thinks, but with an empathy borne of personal experience. He bore the scars of THEO BECKETT's punishments, and now these fools would face the same. The wardens' decree is so similar to Rocket's that if Cillian closed his eyes, he could be back in Kanto.[break][break]

If you defy us, we will break you.[break][break]

Cillian has already been broken.[break][break]

"Prisoner's dilemma," he recognizes. "Classic."[break][break]

The only way to avoid punishment would be to forsake the other ward and hope them foolish enough to trust. But to Cillian, the far safer option is clear.[break][break]

"TRUST." He speaks loud and clear, his voice resonating with the strength of leadership. Quieter, to those close enough to hear him, he says, "I have learned that this world is full of idealists. Their naivety may shield us from the greater punishment."

He's glad that he wasn't. He can't fathom Lugia's first memories of him being entwined with her capture, the terror and fury she must have felt. She'd have killed him rather than blessed him as soon as she was free then, he's sure.[break][break]

"She's not aligned with the dark." His lip twitches. "The dark is aligned with her."[break][break]

She had not stayed with Rocket because she believed in their cause. She'd stayed because he had. She'd gone beneath the Silver Spire to hide, not to seek violence.[break][break]

"As to why she's been the only one... bad luck, I think. Or good luck, depending on how you look at it. Most Pokemon don't survive the process. It could be that she's not the first to be infected, but the first to live through it."[break][break]

And perhaps she wouldn't have, if not for Rocket's intervention.[break][break]

Cillian shakes his head as Xenon dismisses further researching Shadows. He's not surprised, but he is disappoiunted.[break][break]

"A lack of progress doesn't mean there's nothing left to find. It means we're looking at things from the wrong angle."[break][break]

Not that I'd expect you to know anything about that. Xenon saw the world through one angle: her own.

An ARAQUANID skates across the surface of the water, seemingly curious about the vessel that cuts through its territory. The SHADOW STORM that manifests around them isn't targeted at the bug, but Cillian tosses a ball when it's caught within the cyclone's sway.[break][break]

A glance skyward suggests that, instead, the STORM was meant to impress Moltres. Cillian can't remember the last time Lugia had tried to impress anyone.[break][break]

Graceful in spite of her size, the Guardian swipes at Moltres with her spiked tail, careful to only impact with the flat of its bone-white blades. Her song echoes through the air, beautiful even in its corruption.[break][break]

"Like calls to like, I suppose."[break][break]

After all, were Barnaby and Cillian not friends who understood each other's sinister qualities?[break][break]

"It'll be a joy to see them fight alongside each other."

Cillian is not a stupid man.[break][break]

When he makes to return to the surface only to find the route he'd taken to get down here has mysteriously collapsed, it was easy enough to blame a Pokémon. These things happened, after all.[break][break]

But when he finds the next tunnel in a similar state, he knows he's walking into a trap. Yet what choice does he have?[break][break]

SHADOW MIASMA swells around him, a clear signal to those who remain out of sight that he is aware and alert. These tunnels are too narrow to call upon SHADOW LUGIA'S aid, so Cillian instead keeps his SHADOW DHELMISE close at hand. It cannot risk PHANTOM FORCE in uncharted territory such as this, lest it phase them into a wall to suffocate, and so it merely keeps to the shadows of its ethereal plane and drifts in Cillian's own shadow.[break][break]

Neither of them are prepared for the dart.[break][break]

If he had been, perhaps Cillian's miasma-given speed would've let him dodge it. Instead, he staggers in pained surprise and clamps a hand to the side of his neck as a sharp pain pierces it.[break][break]

He's experimented enough with NIHILEGO TOXIN to know how it feels as it surges through his system. His veins burn purple in its path, the corruption sweeping through his bloodstream with alarming speed. It takes effect faster than it should. He doubles over, and perhaps Nikita Sokolov will believe he has won.[break][break]

But Cillian has experimented enough that this dose is too low to bring him down.[break][break]

With fingers that tremble beneath the building adrenaline and rage, Cillian rips the dart from his neck. Blood spurts from the small wound as the underboss casts the empty vessel aside. When he turns his gaze toward the direction from whence it had been fired, his eyes are not gold, but a deep, corrupted purple.[break][break]

He snarls, and he looks utterly inhuman.[break][break]

His Dhelmise appears behind Nikita with its PHANTOM FORCE, attempting a ghastly strike toward the one who'd attacked its master.

The derision in his tone makes the subtext clear: they, as Rockets, were not.[break][break]

But though he could send out his entire team and thrash sage morgan in seconds, it would not be an effective way to test the recruit's strength. Instead, Cillian answers the question with a nod.[break][break]

He would not send out his whole team, but he would put Sage on the back foot.[break][break]

He sends out two Shadows that Sage has not met: a Lycanroc whose once-blue fur is tinged a deep purple, and a Tyranitar covered in shards of obsidian crystal that swallow any light that touches them. As soon as the Tyranitar is released, a DARK SANDSTREAM of stinging crystal shards whips up through the training room. It stings exposed skin with tiny cuts.[break][break]

Tyranitar summons a sandstorm of dark crystal shards when it enters battle. Other weather conditions can be present but this weather condition cannot be eliminated or replaced as long as Tyranitar is on the field. Tyranitar's DARK-TYPE attacks cannot be resisted during DARK SANDSTREAM. All Pokemon on the field except Tyranitar will suffer damage every round.

No warning is given before Cillian clicks his tongue.[break][break]

Lycanroc howls, a horrible sound of SHADOW that takes DOWN the guard of its opponents. Its parted jaws look like a terrible grin as it stares down its challengers, with NO GUARD ensuring the impact of its attacks.[break][break]

Morrigan targets the Chandelure with a STONE EDGE, hurling a spear of rock like a javelin toward the ghost.

It was a shame that happy thoughts were but diamonds in the roughness of his memories. He tries to think of Tempest Quinn but keeps remembering the last time they'd fought. He tries to think of Lulu Flint and Naomi Sato, but his mind fills with bitterness at one's abandonment and the other's consorting with the League. He dares not think of Rowan Wrynn, and knows by then that his fear of jayden cross's Avatarship would only damn him.[break][break]

"Trying," he chokes out. "It's fightin' me."[break][break]

The toxin is building up in his system. He's resisting it; Poipole are not nearly as strong as their evolved kin. But it's hard, and he trembles with the effort and the pain. There's adrenaline, too, spiking his heart rate and making the monitors in the room run wild.[break][break]

In the end, what he settles on is not thinking. He closes his eyes and transports himself back to Kanto's mindset, where he'd often have to blank his mind to cope with what they'd put him through. That, in the end, is what gets him through it.[break][break]

His heart slows back to a rapid but not alarming pace. His breathing is steady.[break][break]

He endures.
