The DARK PULSE find Walpurgis easily. The confusion had taken its toll on the Spiritomb and made it impossible for the pokemon to evade... Any attack, really. He couldn't pull it off even if he tried.

And yet, the CURSE serves its purpose and drains some of Kuo's life as well. It is evident that between the two, Walpurgis was the one who had suffered more damage, but the two almost stood on equal footing. The pressure in the room grows heavier as the shadow of the ghost-type extends in a final gambit, an attempt at striking Kuo while he still can.

it doesn't matter where. the order is barely recognized through the confusion but much like their opponent, kuo disappears into the shadows and immediately shifts off to the side for a SUCKER PUNCH. by pure luck, kuo might have hit the other spiritomb, but lance isn't too sure. it's hard to see much besides two moving shadows.

The SUCKER PUNCH finds its target and lands the final blow on Katherine's Spiritomb, sending it to a longer sleep than the one he'd succumbed to minutes ago.

Despite the fact that Walpurgis had fainted, the CURSE continues to tick until Kuo is withdrawn.

"Did you seriously think you might lose?" Each time she visits and challenges a gym, she's too sure of herself to consider that option. For some reason, she thought Lance might be the same. She brought out Walpurgis's pokeball and recalled him before searching for a badge in her bag.

She fails to find it, but Willow saves the day and phases through a wall to gift Lance with what he'd earned.

"Thanks, Willow." The small ghost cheered a little, half for himself and half for Lance's victory.

[attr="class","lance i"]the two spiritombs materialize out of the shadows and only one of them is left standing. it takes him a moment to recognize that the spiritomb's his, relief hitting him moments after. he recalls kuo back into his pokeball, sparing him from the CURSE.

"it never hurts to have a contingency plan." he shrugs. "i also wasn't too sure what to expect. your aegislash looked powerful." even though it was only used as a prop for their duel, it still emanated a threatening aura.

lance smiles at the sight of the little ghost floating over his way. "thank you so much, willow." he extends his hand out, accepting the badge. his eyes flick back up to the gym leader.

"did you let me win?"

Katherine makes her way over and smiles softly both at the mention of her Aegislash and Lance's question.

"Do you think I let you win, Lance?"

She was curious to hear if that's how he felt, if it seemed like she didn't try hard enough. "No, I didn't. But in my defense, I thought you'd be a lot worse at this." She didn't prepare herself or her pokemon for someone with as much experience as he had.

Still, until the very last moment of their battle, she wasn't sure who would come out as the winner.

Her phone, still operated by Rotom, floats beside her and shows a map of Mauville and how close the taxi driver was to the gym. They had about a minute or two to spare before he'd arrive.

[attr="class","lance i"]he considers it for a moment. "i like to think you did, if only to prove that you have a soft spot for me." it's nice to think about even if it isn't true.

"looks like we'll have to battle again then." the prospect of doing so has him grinning. he enjoyed their battle, despite it being rather tame. he imagines their next battle won't be as calm as this was.

sparing a glance to her phone, he says: "don't forget your purse."
