Conrad. Priam, the kid with the whole of Rocket protecting him. Gavin's got a soft spot; it's hard not to. There's a certain fondness that kindles in Gavin's expression as Dominic names him.[break][break]

Nightingale. One of Rocket's double-agents, and a member of Remiel's Order to boot. Gavin doesn't necessarily trust Isra, but he admires her competence.[break][break]

Cross. Gavin had never met Jayde, nor Boris, but theirs are names he knows. His eyes narrow at mention of the former underboss.[break][break]

"Well don't leave me hanging," he drawls, something dangerous and detached in his voice. Dominic is playing with fire. Gavin knows he's well aware, can see it in the pull of his lips. "Do tell me your favourite part."

there's no humour in dominic's smile, nor in the lilt of his tone. the narrow of his eyes matches gavin's.

"they fucking held hands while his pokemon spat fire at me and boris and all she did was watch."

dominic remembers the searing against his skin, only his scolipede’s protective barrier between him and petrov’s charizard. he remembers the grunt beside him consumed by flame when he prioritised boris and the jirachi over him; he blames petrov and wolfe for that too.

"you know…" he continues slowly, his voice dropping. this time the hostility is plain.

"one of our kids died in those flames." he had to think to recall the name, pre-empting gavin’s question. "you ever work with him? berwick?"

He doesn't want to believe it. Had Dominic not brought up the names of agents whose word Gavin felt he could trust, he'd have likely dismissed the notion there and then. She was one of their Beasts. They were the weapons wielded against men like Petrov.

He remembers something she'd said on the beach, when Valerio Dachev had spoken of his lust for the role. I wasn't taught.

No. Like a weapon, she'd been forged and hammered and used. He's been with Rocket long enough to understand what those words had meant. He justifies it: Nikolai had been a Beast, too. They could have been friends. More than friends, if Dominic's insinuations held any merit. Gavin doubts him on principal.[break][break]

He stiffens at the name.[break][break]

"No." There's a hard edge to his voice. A nerve has been struck; had Dominic realised he had a gentler heart for their youth? "But I know who you mean."

he doesn’t quite know what did it exactly, but dominic’s sure he’s got merlino pinned down; dominic thinks he can see the seams.

"good kid, had a lot of promise," dominic says after a moment that’s long enough that he deems it to be respectful to speak again. it is true, but he would have said it even if it weren’t. there’s a wistful quality to the timbre of his voice.

dominic parts his lips, words forming on his tongue, but he tucks the thought away, opting instead to study gavin with particular scrutiny. he’s accustomed to catching minute, hair-pin gestures, mostly because they serve as an precursor for more dangerous motions - attacks, the drawing of pokemon capsules or firearms. expressions are harder for him, and the variation in voice even moreso.

for now, he decides he’s said enough.

In studying Gavin, his subtle cues and the minute twitches of expression, Dominic will no doubt see the level of restraint his counterpart possesses. Though fury radiates from him in wicked pulses, the fingers at his side remain tense but uncurled.[break][break]

His sigh rattles in his throat.[break][break]

"Don't they always." It's not phrased as a question. The words are heavy on his tongue. In the eye of his mind, he pictures blazing fire and burning skin. His stomach turns. "Should never have been on the front lines like that."[break][break]

Yet even as he says it, there's a part of Gavin that understands it's just how things work, sometimes. Life wasn't kind. It didn't wait around for you to grow up before it spat in your face and rubbed dirt in your wounds. He momentarily forgets about how things relate back to Emma; he's picturing priam conrad, the toxins and flames of Littleroot and just how easily things could have gone awry. It's not until the visions shift back to the explosion at the end, the fear for his life as he and Emma made their escape, that he remembers.[break][break]

"She's with us now, Sinclair." It's not quite a warning, though his tone carries love's ferocity. "With me now. Rocket's changed."[break][break]

He hadn't known her, then. He knows her now.

"i’m not forgiving anyone." his snarl is immediate, but dominic finds himself choking on more words.

she should have been the one to burn.

briefly, his lips curl, teeth flashing. there’s a tensing of muscle in his shoulders but he lets the words rest and crumble on the back of his tongue. dominic wrangles his jaw shut, grinds his teeth to trap the things he knows he cannot say.

dominic’s fury, he knows, runs hotter than gavin’s, but the passage of time had made the anger settle between his ribs whereas gavin’s sears just below the surface of the skin. he tells himself he can be patient. slowly, dominic inclines his head backward, smoke billowing languidly from his lips.

"no," he exhales in a soft breath. his tone is an almost gentle, barely audible murmur. "no, gavin. she was with petrov, and here she is with you, for now. the rest remember, and i do too."

Gavin almost punches him. His fingers curl, joints cracking under the force of it. Nails bite deep into the flesh of his palm as Gavin reins in his fury. This was exactly what Dominic wanted. He wasn't going to give him the satisfaction.[break][break]

"I don't give a fuck if you forgive her." Gavin's tone sharpens to a knife's edge. "But since Cadis brought her back, she's been nothing but good for Rocket."[break][break]

The notion that Emma would betray him hadn't crossed his mind, and he's quick to dismiss it when Dominic attempts to plant the seeds of doubt. Petrov was dead. Perhaps Emma would have stayed with the man if he wasn't. Perhaps they'd be enemies. It's irrelevant to him; the Emma Wolfe he knew was not the one who'd been at Navel Rock.[break][break]

"Tch. She betrays me, I'd be the first to turn on her." His fist has uncurled, and he leans against the wall with arms folded. "She won't."[break][break]

It's spoken with an easy confidence.

dominic smiles, something distant and fleeting. "then i guess good is subjective." he remembers lists of failed or incomplete assignments, killings of league council members that never took place for one reason or another. cadis would find a place for a washed up assassin, her presence a mere vestige of the blackwell reign, but he never found it palatable.

"if she betrays you?" dominic echoes, his brow quirking into a frown. "it’s not just about you, and it’s not about my feelings either. what about the others? she betrayed all of us before..."

he lets the words linger and clenches his jaw again to stop the wayward words climbing up along his throat. for a moment, dominic instead allows himself to be struck by gavin’s response; there’s something juvenile about the fold of his arms and the conviction of his delivery.

the farce of it all strains at him as though a physical sensation. it actually makes dominic laugh - a brief and humorless exhale.

Gavin shakes his head. His laugh, too, is breathy and devoid of humour.[break][break]

"To betray Rocket is to betray me, Dominic." He's an underboss now, not some lowly grunt whose partner could defect without him batting an eye. He was in deep and he'd dragged her to his depths. They'd sink or swim together. "Barely knew her before she came back, but I know the shit Rocket did to people like her. Miracle she didn't come back to cut our throats."[break][break]

He doesn't know the gory details. He's never asked. But he's seen it in the fringes, like with Valerio at the beach — I wasn't taught.

"She's had every chance to kill me. Hasn't done it yet." His smile is humorless, too, jagged edges. "She ever does, you're free to gloat over my corpse. Until then, we're on the same side."
