walsh didn’t tell him about this; about the way his skin will shift in the shadow as though bleeding off the bone, as if there’s something sitting between it and the flesh below.

it’s fine; he found the remedy at the end of a line and he can still taste it. dominic wants to laugh at his hands but the crush of bodies around him prevents him from stretching them out far enough. there are multiple platforms - he knows this because he’s ascended one to pace at the perimeter. he knows these faces, and he recognises these voices.

dominic balances his pokemon’s capsules between violinist fingers, and when he calls out, his voice sounds ragged and foreign; "who is coming up?"

against the ceiling, dominic’s silhouetted shadow moves without him.

Rex isn't sure whether this was the smartest idea he ever had or his stupidest, but the liquid courage warming his stomach was whispering that this was fine. The air tastes like fun, of excitement and tension but, ironically, he's here not to have fun. [break][break]

No, he wasn't following one of his newest "bosses", but he definitely wasn't passing up a chance to see the guy when he recognized him. He pushed aggressively through the crowd as the call rang out. The guy, Dominic was maybe his name, seemed like good muscle to Rex. He seemed strong, scary, and confident...he just wondered what was so special that he got to be important as he was. [break][break]

It was a breath of fresh air up on the platform, Rex's "winning" smile only widening as he rocked forward, "Aww, you don' look that tough. Ya gonna prove me wrong?" He talked like he was seeing a stranger, impairment clouding his eyes and adding a dopiness to his smile. Still, his smile was of a shark's (or a T-rex, as he'd always say), aggressive and only praying for weakness. [break][break]

Did someone put something in his drink? All those shadows...he was seeing things.

dominic swings around to look at the figure joining him on the platform; eyes half-lidded, his sneer of a smile is as razor-sharp as rex’s. he wants to laugh, but the sound that comes from the back of his throat is ragged and hollow.

"tough?" he echoes. no, he isn’t tough, but he is something much worse; something twisting and wrong, something like a blade between the third and fourth ribs.

"let me show you what i am."

with a practiced motion, a barely perceptible flick of the wrist, two of dominic’s pokemon take their shapes from bursts of light that are too brilliant for dominic’s eyes. when the light fades, only one pokemon is visible, the other having disappeared into the former’s shadow immediately.

a lone delcatty remains on the arena - the pokemon stretches its feline limbs, unbothered by the crowd and sits down, tail curled around its body. unbeknownst to observers, a gengar hides itself inside the shadow cast by the delcatty, and uses ROLE PLAY on its ally.

the rules in this place are flexible, and dominic keeps more capsules balanced between his fingers, posture and smile languid.

The ragged, harsh voice rattled in Rex's ribs, but he was well aware of the number of eyes on them. No way was he backing down now, and, with his smile on, he only hoped it looked more like the shake in his hands was from excitement and drink. [break][break]

There was no way he was that different from him. What made him better? [break][break]

His Pokeballs cracked against the ground, opening almost almost the same time as Dominic's. A new Pokemon was in the fray, one he was itching to use, the gloriously awesome Aurorus. Two and Thirteen, along with an adorably purple cat, was the only thing Rex could see, and his nervous titter evolved into a genuine laugh. "Ooh, ooh! Get it, make it stop and take it down!" What kind of idiot only used one Pokemon here!? And what was it doing, not actually attacking? His order prompted Thirteen to flash a sparkling light, Encore, at the Delcatty. At the same time, Two shrieked and sprang up, planning to plunge her claws into the Delcatty in a vicious Fury Cutter. [break][break]

He couldn't even imagine that his Pokemon weren't alone with their prey.

the delcatty blinks slowly at the aurorus as it tries to use ENCORE, but seeing as it hadn’t used any moves yet, it just inclines its head sideways and regards the ice-type with amused confusion. still, apparently everyone is expecting it to do something, so the delcatty sighs and rises from its sitting position and lunges forward to snap at the armaldo before it can act with a FAKE OUT.

the gengar remains inside the delcatty’s shadow and, once it is brought closer to their opponents, the gengar will connect itself with the aurorus with an unfathomable, mystical force that manifests itself in a SKILL SWAP as its ability is taken away and replaced with gengar’s NORMALIZE.

dominic watches the scene play out, his expression impassive and his smile distant and meant for a moment that is not this. "you’re doing great," he drawls to his pokemon. from somewhere in the shadow, the gengar gives an impish cackle.

Thirteen suddenly shrieked and reared up as the Delcatty stunned Two, who stumbled back as the feline used Fake Out, shaking her head from the attack. It didn't hurt much, but still! [break][break]

The Aurorus' fright came from the shadow that lunged forward and, not realizing its ability had been switched, unleased a Blizzard towards both the Delcatty and shadow. [break][break]

As if challenged by Dominic's own praise towards his Pokemon, Rex puffed up and bellowed down, "You got this! Two! Get back in there!" If there was any Pokemon he trusted, it was the Armaldo. She'd take care of this when she got in there.
