"I much prefer villains myself. Take a villain away and the hero becomes purposeless. Take the hero away? The villain wins." Her lips curled in a faint, mocking smile. "You have to respect someone who knows what they want and go for it, regardless of what the world thinks." There was an undercurrent of mockery in Alecto's voice, but it was very faint.

Of course, reality was much messier than that. There were no neat divides between hero and villain, thankfully. The world would be a horribly dull place otherwise.

Still clutching the heavy tome in her hands, Alecto looked around and sat in the middle of the circle, careful not to disturb any of the markings. "I've always found it curious how people seemed so keen to give pokémon human-like traits - but only the good, harmless ones. I suppose it brings a measure of comfort. Compared to them, we are very fragile, and no one wants to think of murderous monsters sleeping next to them at night."

Green eyes shift from the woman to the Mismagius and there's a shift in them; they do not warm, exactly, but there's a glimmer of interest in them. "That's silly. Maybe they used to match people for their own amusement. Trickery is one of their domains. I don't know about them being monsters. I never had one myself."

Saint suddenly pops out of the nearby bushes dragging behind him a floating, half-chewed Drifloon. The later didn't seem very impressed at having been dragged around, but Saint was cackling manically and yanking on the Drifloon's limbs, jostling the balloon-like pokémon. Alecto threw a pokéball at the Drifloon, hoping to catch it for herself.

"What brings you here? You are a regular visitor, given your earlier words."

There’s a certain rhythm in which the Elygem teleports around. First, to announce its arrival, and then to toy with its visitors. It seems trained, almost, as if following a pattern both to avoid direct contact while drawing attention.

If Katherine had to guess, she’d bet money that it was acting this way due to past visitors who tossed their pokeballs at the psychic-type without taking into consideration how nimble it was.

”Be a dear and fetch him, please, Morgana.”

The witch-like pokemon twirled in the air before sinking into the ground, allowing a PHANTOM FORCE to swallow her whole before vanishing. The wild Elygem, now confused, attempted to sense where the Mismagius was before she collided with it from behind.

The force of her strike made the small pokemon fall to the ground, no longer carrying itself on top of a psychic wave. Katherine eyed it curiously, taking her precious time before choosing whether if it was worth a capsule.

“This place has two of my favorite things,” She answered plainly in response to Alecto’s question, “Well, usually it does. Today is an exception, I guess. It’s supposed to be quiet here,” But it wasn’t. Not that Kat was complaining or anything. After all, Alecto hasn’t done anything to disturb the peace in this place.

”And the second thing is the ghosts, duh. I mean, is there a better place to look for them in Hoenn?”

Considering her occupation, she already knew the answer.

A Pokeball is tossed towards the still-recovering Elygem, allowing the device to capture the pokemon just as the Sableye returned with its prey.

“Also, I am sort of obligated to check that no one’s disturbing their peace, you know. I mean, I’d be sent here to check if anything bad happened regardless.” Kat was a firm believer that prevention was better than cure - and this was exactly that.

Alecto listens to Katherine's response with only half an ear, most of her attention focused on the big ghost that abruptly materializes at the edge of her circle. As with the other times, there is not much of a visible reaction from Alecto. Yet, if one were to look closely they'd be able to discern the sudden glimmer of excitement in moss-green eyes.

The Dusclops doesn't step into the circle, but instead looms over Alecto, thick swatches of fabric floating around its body eerily. The single red eye focuses on the human within the circle with worrying intensity - and the shadow of a smirk paints itself over Alecto's lips.

Saint appears on the Dusclops' head, sharp teeth glinting in the moonlight as he opens his jaw to bite, only to be swiftly batted aside by a meaty hand. The small pokémon is thrown to the ground, smudging some of the symbols within the circle.

A strange shadow seems to bleed out from the Dusclops, reaching out to the Sableye on the ground and holding onto it for a small measure of time. Alecto has studied CURSEs and she knows that it hurts the user as well as its intended target. Before the Dusclops can take a step closer, she throws a pokéball at it, in an attempt to catch it.

Regardless, a deep frown takes over her features at the smudged circle -- and a sigh of frustration escapes her. "You'd be sent here?" she asks Katherine, studying the other woman briefly and digesting this new information. So the woman would have to be someone strong and relatively well known. Interesting.

Large tomes are quietly and efficiently gathered into a backpack. "Perhaps you would allow me to accompany you in your rounds?" Now that her hard work has been disrupted -- Alecto finds her curiosity drifting over to other subjects, specifically to the location she's studied so much, yet hasn't explored. And, of course, she finds a strange budding kinship with this woman who seems to understand ghosts without undue fear.

“Uh-huh, I’d be sent here.” Katherine confirms as her Mismagius continues to float around in the area, surveying the location for no reason other than wanting to find a distraction.

“I was recently made the new gym leader of Mauville City. My specialization, in case it wasn’t obvious yet,” She pauses to gesture at the area around them, “Is ghost types.”

Any of them, all of them, and a specific one of them she continued to dream of meeting one day.

Mismagius finds a Honedge during her short-lived expedition, and it’s dragged by a shadowy shackle she maintains with her focus, delivered front and center before Katherine herself, as if seeking an answer. And it comes, eventually, in the form of a red beam that shoots out of an empty capsule Kat brings out.

“Sure. I could use the company.”

She lies through her teeth, but with enough grace in her voice that it should pass as truth.

“..So, what other rituals are you familiar with, if I may ask?”

One of the heavy tomes is carefully tucked under her arm, the backpack she has brought with her already overflooding with books, notes and other supplies. It groans under its own weight as the cultist swings it over her shoulder.

A Gym Leader, then. Mauville's gym leader, which specializes in ghost types. Thinking back, Alecto should have had an inkling, but in truth she has never bothered with the whole Pokémon League affair, finding it mind-bogglingly tedious. Redardless, the knowledge settles into her brain and Alecto files the fact away to be picked apart later.

A wild Swoobat flies overhead, it's screech temporarily desrupting the quiet of Mt Pyre. Saint materializes atop Alecto's shoulder again, jeweled eyes following the flying pokémon as it hisses threateningly. Alecto clicks her tongue and the ghost type settles slightly, moonlight glinting off of its sharp teeth.

"Lead the way, gym leader." Alecto motions to the path that winds around Mt Pyre. If she finds the lie in the woman's words either she does not express it or she simply does not care.

"I am familiar with a fair share of rituals; it is part of my job as a researcher."
