There were at least four tomes of dubious origins spread out on the floor in front of her. Alecto read aloud from one of them, her whispers intruding on the silence of the night. She only had the light from her phone's screen and the scarce silvery moonlight to help her read the words in the book, but she'd manage. She had to. Timing was extremely important for what she was about to do.

Her hand was stained white from the chalk she'd been using to draw the pentagram currently around her. Thankfully, she'd become quite the artist lately, so the symbols weren't too bad and anyway, this was a simple summoning ritual for any wandering spirits in the vicinity. Given that Mt. Pyre was a source of spiritual and psychic energy, this shouldn't take her long.

The sound of nearby steps made Alecto drop her book and it fell with a dry 'thump' atop the other books on the floor. A deep frown crossed her face when the fall smudged some of her carefully drawn symbols, a muttered curse escaping her mouth.

What was someone doing here of all places at this time of the night?! Alecto checked her phone to see the 2AM stamped on the screen, her frown growing deeper.

It's a beautiful night to spend by herself, Katherine decided.

The only company she desired at the dead of the night was that of her Pokemon, a Mismagius named Morgana. The witch-like pokemon floated beside her trainer happily, the mischievous smirk of her species remained plastered to her expression - as if at any given point, it'd be time for a wicked celebration to begin.

Katherine herself was no stranger to nights of debauchery, of course, but a Pokemon Graveyard wasn't the first place she'd consider as the optimal place for such an activity. The Rocketess was here for the sole purpose of finding more ghosts for her gym, of course. She could never have too many.

..But of course, thanks to her luck, she was not alone.

A sound alerts her to the presence of another, and Morgana is spared a glance. "Some light would be helpful, Morgana." The ghost-type merely continued to float before breathing out an orb of dancing flames, swirling around themselves. It, too, floated in the air and now illuminated the area, shedding light on the crime scene.

The gym-leader wasn't expecting to stumble upon another (living) human being, let alone one who'd kept themselves busy with a ritual. Please, for the love of Arceus, don't make her deal with some human sacrifice right now.

Alecto was already kneeling down to repair some of the damage done to the symbols when she heard the movement behind her. When a voice called out to her, she woman didn't respond, muttering under her breath and doing equations in her head as her hand moved to complete the pentagram yet again. "One moment," she said, consulting a second book and cursing, quickly erasing the last drawn symbol and replacing it with another one.

When Alecto finally stood up and turned around, she was nearly blinded by the globule of flame that floated next to a woman and her pokémon. She shielded her eyes with her hand, the corners of her mouth turning down at the sudden intrusion. Still, the ritual was pretty much done - as long as Alecto didn't move.

There was an awkward beat of silence as Alecto silently studied the woman. She had a ghost type, Alecto noted, feeling some of her tension trickle away at the fact. Ghost types were so easily misunderstood that Alecto always gave some benefit of the doubt to those trainers who owned them. "Hello," she finally answered, shuffling in place. "Do you mind moving to your left a little bit? You're blocking the psychic field."

There was a bit of a commotion happening somewhere behind Alecto, but she didn't pay it much mind. A couple of seconds later, a Sableye appeared - seemingly out of nowhere - dragging an injured Kadabra behind him. The young woman hmmm'ed and seemed to be considering something before nodding and sending a pokéball at the Kadabra.

"Nicely done, Saint." The Sableye reappeared on her shoulder, its eyes and sharp teeth glinting in the moonlight as it grinned at the two strangers.

Despite the confusion she was under, Katherine moved and complied with Alecto's request without a second thought. She didn't mind taking a couple of steps to the left, even if the meaning behind where she stood was lost upon her.

"Uh... If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing exactly?"

The appearance of the Sableye captures her attention, and the slight worry about the woman's ritual fades into nothing at the sight of the familiar ghost-type. She felt more comfortable at the sight of one. The fact it was dragging an injured pokemon behind him meant little. If anything, it promoted Katherine's Mismagius to search for a victim as well.

It takes a couple of moments before Morgana returns with a fainted Litwick being carried on a Psywave, the ghost-type toying with it in air. The gym leader puts an end to the silly show by capturing the candle-like pokemon.

The Mismagius can't help but feel slighted, thus, she turns her back on her trainer. It only earns a roll of eyes from Katherine.

"What's that?" The symbol is recognized, but she prefers to ask despite being familiar with it. She could not discern the meaning of it here. "It looks weird."

Alecto wasn't used to being interrupted while in the midst of a ritual. She wasn't very good with people in general, but especially not at 2AM smack in the middle of a pokémon graveyard while attempting to summon necrotic energies. Still, she was thankful that the woman had moved - the energy was now flowing into the circle she'd created, at least according to the books she'd researched. She hoped her theories proved correct.

"I'm doing a summoning ritual." The answer was delivered in an almost deadpan manner, in the same way someone would say I'm going grocery shopping or I'm going to walk the Growlithe. As if it was a perfectly normal, everyday thing.

"I'm not sure it's working properly yet." A frown marred Alecto's face. She tapped a white chalk against her lips while she thought, failing to notice the white residue left behind. Maybe she'd failed to account for something? The moon's position? The shifting ley lines? The uneven spread of graves?

The woman's voice interrupted her thoughts, but if Alecto was bothered by it, she didn't show it. "Oh, this one?" She pointed to the symbol, feeling excitement bubble up at the question. "It's a protective symbol. It has served several purposes in the latest two to three centuries, but it's most commonly used to ward off evil spirits."

Saint hissed all of a sudden, the sound extremely loud in her ear. His vanishing didn't surprise his trainer, but what he brought back with him had Alecto gasping out loud. She scrambled for her bag and nearly threw the pokéball the wrong way as she attempted to capture the Drakloak.

When she was sure the Drakloak was in its capsule, Alecto continued - as if nothing had happened. "Though in this context it's meant more to contain said spirits instead of warding them off." For the first time, an actual expression other than surprise or concentration crossed Alecto's face and she threw a wry grin at the woman. "A nice way to catch ghost types, no?"

Katherine's Mismagius had almost gone after a nearby Xatu who happened to fly relatively close to one of Alecto's ritualistic symbols, but the mere presence of two ghost-types likely caused the psychic-type to turn away without being asked to. Living on Mt.Pyre, it had to have known that pokemon like Sableye and Mismagius were vicious when needed.

And sometimes even when it wasn't called for.

"A ritual? Hm..."

The gym leader can't help but speculate in her mind about whatever it was that Alecto was summoning. Some ancient pokemon? A rare ghost-type? A spirit? These were the small hours of the night, after all. Her mind couldn't help but stray far away from what's right and makes sense— imagining things was easier. "Who are you trying to bring here, again? I'd like to know if I should scram before some angry ghost shows up."

The sneer that decorates her expression is a tell as to how little Katherine thought about the ritual and the probability that it'd work. It mocks the witch heading it as well, but less intentionally.

"Oh, I see."

She never considered adopting a new tradition or way to capture ghost-types, but it was no secret that some of them were great at escaping pokeballs. "How do you know if it works? It could be just, you know, the Pokeball's work."

Alecto pursed her lips as her mind went through the several texts she'd read about the subject of summoning rituals. Some, of course, were absolute rubbish - nothing but pseudo-spiritualism that made her want to vomit. However, sometimes, in the middle of all that garbage Alecto actually found something useful.

It seemed for a moment as if Alecto had totally forgotten about the presence of the other woman, too lost in thought to hear the question sent her way. She hummed as she leafed through one of the ancient-looking books around her. These types of endeavors required meticulous work and an eye for detail. One mistake and it wouldn't work.

The woman's last question got her attention though. Her green eyes slid away from the text she'd been reading and focused on Katherine. The sneer on the woman's face was largely ignored and instead Alecto's gaze sharpened, as if something had roused her interest. "That's the problem, isn't it? Pokéballs are all fine and good," she motioned to her own, "but these only have been around for so long. And before? There's the Apricorns native to Johto from which you can make primitive pokéballs. But the relation between humans and Pokémon stretches a long way before even that." A small pause. "And don't get me started on that bullshit that pokémon and humans have always cooperated. Have you ever met a nice wild ghost type?" Alecto scoffed.

She looked at the symbols drawn on the ground, head tilted to the side. As far as she could see, the pentagram was drawn to perfection. Now all she had to do was to wait it out. "There are missing links in the story and a very convenient narrative to tidy it up."

The night was silent around them, except for the distant sound of bug types. Suddenly remembering something, Alecto frowned. "I didn't expect to find anyone else here at this time of the night."

The gym-leader provides rather short commentary in response to the witch’s long rant, and more specifically, her rhetorical question about ghosts. “Maybe you aren’t crazy after all.” Or at least, not as much as Katherine had imagined. She did not believe in magic or imagined that it was how humans tamed pokemon in the old ages - but her curiosity had been piqued.

How did they tame pokemon without pokeballs?

“History is written by the victors. And they more often than not prefer to be portrayed as heroes. So yes, there are always missing links.”

But it’s not related to magic. There’s no way she can accept that.

“Ah, yes. I wasn’t expecting to find anyone here either. It’s usually quite lonely up here.” This was far from her first visit in the graveyard, “But I try to visit this place at least once a month. Some of these ghosts are expecting me at this point, you know.”

An eyebrow quirked up in amusement at Katherine's comment about Alecto not being as crazy as Katherine thought. Alecto was no stranger to being seen in a less than favorable light by others. She was well acquainted with derision and with being made an object of ridicule. It didn't bother her much; small minds couldn't grasp at the kind of knowledge Alecto was working to unearth and understand.

So when Katherine didn't immediately (and apparently at least) shove Alecto into the loony compartment, it only served to whet Alecto's curiosity even more. She closed the book she'd been holding in her arms and shifted to face the other woman. "Curious thing, that." She didn't seem to notice the Natu that approached, didn't even startle when it landed atop her shoulder. "History is a maze of prejudice and narrow-mindedness. Everyone thinks they're the hero of their own story - don't you?"

Saint wasn't as enthused about having his shoulder space occupied by the bird. He hissed through sharpened teeth and used FOUL PLAY to trick the Natu into falling to the ground - prompting Alecto to throw a pokéball at the wild pokémon.

The dark-haired woman wasn't familiar with this place despite her nighttime wanderings. She'd studied it theoretically, but this was the first time she'd actually come here at night. "It is peaceful. Saint seems to like it anyway." The Sableye grinned horrifically and let out a sound akin to a cackle. Alecto didn't bat an eyelash when the ghost-type vanished from sight.

"Ghost types are fascinating creatures. They have abilities that evade scientific explanation even to this day. There are theories, but..." She'd read quite a few of those while studying. They'd only roused more questions in Alecto's mind.

She’s willing to entertain the witch’s motion, mulling it over in her mind. “I’ve never been a big fan of traditional heroes, I am afraid. An anti-hero, though, maybe.” Referring to herself as a villain would sound like a bad joke, but the gym leader did consider the title for a brief while.

Sableye’s grin keeps the woman under a spell, or even some trance. The familiar Cheshire smirk is one she loves, belonging to her favorite species. The gem-eating ghoul holds a special place in her heart.

”I suppose we’re not meant to know everything. It’s a part of their charm, isn’t it? Why some ghosts are less corporeal than others, why some are deemed as monsters while the rest are only ‘playful’.”

It’s that special trait that any pokemon belonging to the type seemed to share: the mystery that shrouded them was magnificent and like no other.

And as if on cue, Katherine’s Mismagius lifted her hand to cover her mouth just as she snickered at the sound of the word monsters.

“Some say that Mismagius are capable of true, old witchcraft. The scary kind. And yet still, others believe that they’re nature’s first cupids.” It’s a load of crap, in her eyes. There is no chance on earth that her Mismagius had ever cast a spell to bring two people together. Katherine would have to personally see it in order to believe it.
