valerio spotted Katherine Fairburne when declan gathered the rockets for his briefing. the new rocket boss mentioned the girl being mauville’s new gym leader, taking after cait alfric, and a star player in their plans to invade the league from within.[break][break]

he remembers her receiving the controversial blacephalon, who was in the possession of several other rocket officers before being handed down to her. the old rocket is not skeptical: he knows of her valuable contributions during the latest mission in littleroot and he is aware of her capabilities. while it is a test of her capabilities, it is also a test for his quest to reclaim the title ‘beast.’[break][break]

“katherine expects me.” the rocket executive answers to one of the gym trainers who blocks his entrance.[break][break]

donning the identity of jonathan aquil, someone who looks at least a decade younger than his true age, the man steps closer into the arena where he waits for the next few minutes of the gym leader’s arrival. indra, the hydreigon, looms behind her trainer as well, waiting for her first victim.[break][break]

Valerio is led by a receptionist through a hall of mirrors into the arena. Specters of different species phase in and out of the mirror walls, emerging elsewhere. They welcome the rocket into their home in their own special way - it's peculiar, of course, but everything inside this gym was.

Katherine is revealed to be standing at the center of the arena, and two small pokemon float and levitate around her. An excited Phantump who was chasing after a Rotom inside the room, never once seeming to tire.

"Willow, please. Just let-"

Both of the pokemon stop in their tracks and turn around to face Valerio and the woman who had accompanied him inside. Their sudden shift of focus causes Katherine to turn as well, "Oh, hello. I have a fight scheduled for now, don't I?" An awkward nod from the gym trainer confirms that to be the case. "You can leave us, Wanda. Thank you."

Wanda sheepishly turns to depart and leaves the duo after offering a brief wave.

"Welcome."

Kat recognizes Valerio, of course, but she wasn't familiar with him in particular. Perhaps she'd heard about him in passing, but nothing came to mind at this moment. "You requested a two versus two battle, correct?"

Two Pokeballs are retrieved from her bag, but no pokemon is sent out just yet.

valerio observes before he answers, his eyes crawl to where katherine is already standing. then they trail to the reflectice surfaces surrounding them, indra and his body replicated and magnified through their shimmering skin of glass. the dragon is more curious than intimidated while the man hides his with a smile. no ghosts can haunt valerio—but the ghost of his bloody past.[break][break]

seeing red lights flickering on various points of the arena, he knows the battle will be recorded. as much as he wants to tease the gym leader for being so modest, he needs to stay in character. “two versus two, it is. this is indra—he’ll be joining me today.” he retrieves another pokéball then hurls it into the sky. another flying dragon. “and this is zeus.”[break][break]

The release of his second Pokemon promotes her to send out her duo as well. Her signature Sableye, and a less popular choice - a shiny Roserade who seemed confused at the sight of the gym arena. Fleur was certainly more used to her house and not the sight of the many mirror walls. Amethyst, however, was more than familiar with this room. She was Katherine's to-go-to choice more often than not.

"This is Amethyst, and the Roserade here is Fleur. They won't cut you any slack, so I suggest giving it your all."

And neither will their trainer, of course.

"Amethyst, you may start." The ghost-type acts as soon as the command is given, conjuring orbs of spectral, blue fire that home in on the Altaria. Their intent is to leave a lasting flame on the dragon's mane in order to slowly burn through her defenses.

"Blind them, Fleur." The execution of the DAZZLING GLEAM is a flawless one, where the Roserade begins to shine brilliantly. A pink light is cast across the battlefield, promoting the grass-type to spin in admiration of her own work.

colors play around the mirrors that surround them, flashes of azure and carnation swirl as hydreigon and altaria attempts to retaliate. “indra, zeus, don't forget your training!” the hydreigon maneuvers before each of her head creates a ball of fire and becomes a (heat) wave of fire. altaria, in turn, gathers its dragon energy—violet flares turn pink as it launches itself to the ghost-type.[break][break]

The blue flames of Sableye dance and flicker along the orange ones of Valerio's Hydreigon. They lick at both the Roserade and the Sableye, inflicting much more damage on the first of the two. The grass-type releases a cry of pain and puts out the fire on one their flowers by waving their hand quickly.

However, they are fully aware that the damage they've sustained is not anything to scoff at. It promotes Fleur to twirl in place once more, this time, in order to call upon rain to shower down on both Sableye and her.

The LIFE DEW restores the health of both of the pokemon equally, rejuvenating their pools of stamina already. It aids Amethyst when the MOONBLAST collapses against her form, shoving her back a little.

"You can use the rain too, Amethyst."
[break][break]
The temperature begins to lower, causing the ongoing rain to freeze in the air. With a soft breath of the ghost-type, a breeze sends the shards of ice in the direction of the dragons, causing an ICY WIND to ensue.

the life dew-turned-icy wind combo is tremendously strong. valerio cannot think of any other way out but another hurricane of fire against the two. “indra, zeus, again!” hydreigon forces her heads once more another ball of orange fire, heat wave crashes into katherine's side like a wall of flames. ice melts with wave but some still manages to break through, piercing through both of his dragon's flesh.[break][break]

altaria, on the other hand, radiates in the dome of mirrors. light pierces to every gaps as the dragon changes form, fluffier and fiercer than usual. burn licking through its skin fades and charges with another, stronger moonblast.[break][break]

altaria and hydreigon are hit by dazzling gleam. it deals heavy damage.[break]

The mega-evolution spells a change in the tides of their battle. The burn status effect is cured as if having never been inflicted, and the plumage of the pokemon grew in size tremendously - offering a better protective layer.

"Fleur, blind them again."

The DAZZLING GLEAM is expected at this point, but the intent behind it remains hidden. Hydreigon's flames reach the pair of pokemon easily, fire licking at them ferociously. It is the Altaria's MOONBLAST that Katherine's Sableye attempts to use to her advantage.

The ghost-type mega-evolves as well while still obscured by pink spectacle of lights - and it tanks the move head-on, without faltering. Its gem-like shield helps mitigate the damage, but most importantly, it converts the damage itself into a steel-like orb that takes aim against Altaria herself.

It nearly doubles the damage inflicted against Sableye, thanks to the properties of the unique METAL BURST.

Katherine Fairburne’s sableye easily made a spectacle out of zeus’s moonblast, the ghost-type converting fairy energy to something that makes it lethal. the avian dragon makes no attempt to dodge. his fluff caresses his flailing body with more security. the metal burst hits just as the altaria glimmers with silvery light, roosting with a recuperated vigor in facing his threats.[break][break]

indra hurdles her heads toward each other, the dazzling gleam passes at a light speed without having the chance to blind the three-headed dragon. there is no more strategy for her but survival—and her best chance at winning is when altaria is still alive.[break][break]

The other team is not taking the initiative. It makes for a one-sided battle that Katherine doesn't even need to interfere or meddle with. Both her pokemons support each other through coordinated attacks that prove to be quite bothersome to deal with. They cover more ground, affect multiple targets, and are relentless in their pursuit.

"Don't let them get comfy." It wasn't the time nor was it the place. A cold breeze sweeps forth, conjured by the mega-evolved Sableye. It doesn't need to be precise with its aim, and so precision is not an issue. Roserade's show of light persists and the shades of the DAZZLING GLEAM's pink hue meld into those of the ICY WIND.

"That's the problem with dragon-types, by the way. Their weaknesses are too easy to exploit."

It's why fielding two dragons together is seen as a mistake in her eyes. A better partner to the Altaria would be a fire-type who could protect her from a harsh blizzard.

before hydreigon can even attempt to dodge icy wind, the dazzling gleam blinds her completely, making the three-headed dragon crash to the ground without being able to retaliate. but altaria is still alive.[break][break]

“that’s true,” valerio admits. as a dragon slayer, valerio knows once you get the hang of it, you can easily find your way from the piercing stares of a dragon. “but that doesn’t even make them less interesting and special.” altaria exploits the last of her dragon abilities to summon tremors into the ground, earthquake stirring the land underneath. the dragon is already panting from exhaustion, but he still has the willpower to push through and fulfill his obligation to his trainer.[break][break]

“I agree.”

Katherine’s mind wanders elsewhere for a short while, thinking of her childish Garchomp. Despite the pokemon’s glaring weakness to the ice-type, she adored it. He was a headache most of the time, but he was her headache, which made it bearable.

”I think that in another life, I’d have been a dragon-specialist myself.”

The Hydreigon collapses to the ground just as Valerio’s Altaria wills the ground of the arena to shake, staggering Katherine’s own pokemon. In retaliation, Katherine’s Roserade shoots off a SLUDGE BOMB. The poison-type attack is followed by a number of ghastly, flaming orbs that are conjured by Katherine’s Sableye.

Unfortunately, while the mega-evolved pokemon managed to withstand the EARTHQUAKE, the Roserade could not. It releases a final cry before fainting, and then they’re recalled.

This battle is close - but her Sableye is still in the lead.

notes: SLUDGE BOMB is used by roserade, who faints afterward. sableye uses WILL O WISP. mega-evolution comes to an end.

Sableye braces itself for the incoming Moonblast, however, it unfortunately lacks the shield to protect itself with. The fairy-type move pushes the ghost-type back slightly, earning a painful cry from the pokemon.

The residue of water that remained from Roserade’s LIFE DEW nearly caused the ghoul to trip as it stepped back, but it regained its footing before such can happen.

Katherine doesn’t command her partner to do anything, it acts on its own accord. An ICY WIND billows forth, carrying frozen shards with its breeze all for the purpose of harming the cloudy dragon.

“Don't let your anger cloud your instincts, Amethyst.”

“can you still do it?” altaria nods, mustering his remaining strength as he lets one final moonblast into her ghost enemy. the fairy energy is small but compact, threatening still at the face of passing out. the dragon billows with the last of his force before finally landing into the arena's floor. unmoving.[break][break]

should sableye survive the fairy ordeal, they are free to knock out the poor dragon whose eyes are relentless in his desire to win.[break][break]
