Oscar was doing his best, he really was, but this scientist had been blathering for six minutes about weather nonsense and Oscar could only smile for so long. His cheeks grew rose red as he strained to appear friendly, a task that was much easier before hearing the intricacies of cloud movement. It nearly made him want to throw this guy into the river.

Yet polite he remained, standing dutiful as ever outside the weather institute with Gavin. They were undercover as their league aliases, fulfilling a kind deed for the needy scientists of Route 119. Apparently every time they put out castforms to read weather patterns, poachers would come around and take them. The poachers were starting to get bolder, attacking scientists as they escorted castforms to their respective resting places. The institute needed some strong trainers to help take care of these poachers, luring them out by escorting some castform to their weather reading destinations.

While on the surface it seemed like they were doing this out of the kindness of their hearts, completing this task was in Rocket's best interest. After all, these poachers were cutting in on their own operation of kidnapping the institute's seemingly endless supply of castform when left unattended. It was yet another case of a bunch of overconfident nobodies that needed to learn their place.

Oscar was more than happy to assist, but once again his patience was wearing thin. So impatient was he, that he barely noticed when the scientist shut up and released their charge. Oscar's strain faded, resuming his faux-cheer demeanor. "Leave it to us! This little guy won't have a single hair harmed on his head."

Did castform have hair? Whatever the statement stands.

Gavin listens politely to the over-eager league scientist, nodding or shaking his head on occasion when a question is posed. His knowledge on Castform is limited by comparison, but his mind is a sponge that soaks up everything he hears.[break][break]

He smiles when the long-winded spiel finally comes to an end.[break][break]

"I'll keep that in mind, sir. Thank you."[break][break]

Castform hovers next to them, chipper and unaware that its placement would suit Rockets needs, rather than the League's. They could gain favour with the Institute by ensuring that the creature remained in place and unharmed while also leeching off whatever data the Pokemon gathered.[break][break]

As soon as they're out of the man's earshot, Gavin addresses Oscar without turning his head to look at his fellow Rocket. "Did you get much of what that guy was saying?" He smirks, shakes his head and drops his faux-concern. "Don't worry; I was following. I used to be a scientist, after all. Still am, but..."

Oscar squirmed when Gavin asked about how much he had retained, his face turning bright red. "I um--y'know I-I got the gist." Oscar relaxed when Gavin revealed he got most of it, letting out a sigh of relief. The fact that Gavin was once a scientist though was new to Oscar, he didn't know much of Gavin's life before he became an underboss. The subject was intriguing.

"I had no idea." Oscar admitted as they began their trek. "What was your field of study?" Knowing Oscar one might question how genuine his interest was when it came to science, but one look into those bright eyes told the truth of it. He was very much curious, more so to learn about Gavin than to actually learn anything about what he studied.

The sun beat down on them as they walked, the heat dampened by a soft breeze that would come by every few minutes. The castform quite enjoyed the weather, bouncing in the air while its escorts chatted. Yet as their journey went on, the castform swore it saw shapes in the brush following them. A fact Oscar would pick up as he glanced to the castform offhandedly, observing its sudden worry.

He knew Gavin probably noticed as well, but nevertheless Oscar communicated is observation to his superior in a hushed tone, "Something's making the castform nervous, you think we're being followed?"

He's not surprised that his scientific achievements have fell to the wayside; in Rocket, Gavin's reputation has been built upon power and ruthlessness. The thought leaves a bitter taste that he's quick to swallow.[break][break]

"Evolutionary biology," he replies. "According to my degree, anyway."[break][break]

His canines flash in a dangerous smile. He's studied far more than simple evolution under Rocket's employ. Through the organization, he's seen wonders of science that the League would never have allowed.[break][break]

He remains calm as they walk, feigning ignorance to the shadows that lurk in his peripheral. Oscar's question sees the underboss incline his head. When he speaks, his voice is soft and level. "We're definitely being followed. There's at least three, maybe more."

Oscar shifted his attention to the road, playing ignorant to their stalkers. He struck up a conversation subject, a bit louder so the stalkers might continue to stay comfortable following them. "Alright evolution professor, maybe you can answer a question that's been bothering me. What the hell is with Pupitar? Larvitar isn't a bug type, but he turns into a pupa to evolve into tyranitar. What's with that?"

Oscar listened to Gavin's answer, while also paying attention to the brush around them. In the middle of one of Gavin's sentences, something would emerge from behind. Oscar opened a ball, almost quick drawing it as soon as he heard the bushes rustle. A toxapex emerged, before the mission Oscar made it clear that her job if she ever came out was to protect the castform at all cost. She did just that, using her tentacles to pull the castform into her Baneful Bunker.

The Galarian linoone that had charged toward them could not stop its momentum, bouncing off the toxapex. It screamed as it tumbled away, the toxapex's poisonous barbs infecting it on contact. Oscar turned fully as five men in concealing clothing emerged from the bushes. Oscar raised a brow, "You guys seem a bit overdressed for summer. Could hear you a mile back." The poachers said nothing, pulling out pokeballs. Oscar pulled out a second ball, "And here I thought they'd pussy out."

Meanwhile the castform was terrified, nobody had warned it about this strategy. The toxapex tried to seem friendly, but that was like trying to make a spike pit look inviting to jump in. Oh well, as long as the little guy was safe who cared how it felt.

"You know, that's one of the world's greatest mysteries." Though there's clear humour in his tone, he follows with a more serious, "Honestly, some Pokemon have the strangest qualifications. Ever seen a Dhelmise? It lives in the ocean, looks like an anchor, and yet it's not water or steel-type. It's grass of all things, and —"[break][break]

He breaks off mid-sentence and pivots to face the poachers, who seem surprised by how quick their marks react.[break][break]

Gavin spares a passing glance to the Castform to ensure its safety before pressing the button on the pokeball held in his grasp. His Lycanroc emerges hunched and snarling, throwing back its head to let out an eerie howl. A ROCK SLIDE tumbles behind the poachers, blocking off their retreat. They'd chosen to attack, and Gavin would force them to see this fight to a bloody end.[break][break]

"They're going to wish they had. Get 'em."[break][break]

Lycanroc lunges for one of the poachers, knocking him down before he can release his Pokemon.

Oscar sneered as Gavin's lycanroc attacked one of the poachers, taking him down before he could act against them. The other three were quicker though, pulling out pokeballs to release a medicham, a haunter, and a mightyena. Oscar noted that only three out of the four remaining poachers acted, evidently the fourth was the owner of the linoone currently twitching on the ground.

Oscar opened his second ball, releasing Boris the Haxorus. Boris looked to the three hostile pokemon before him and growled. This would hardly be a challenge. The mightyena moved to strike, only to be almost instantly tossed through the rocks behind the poachers by Boris's First Impression. Now standing where the mightyena was, Boris slowly looked toward his other two opponents.

The haunter looked between the haxorus and medicham before very quickly turning to attack the lycanroc. The medicham twitched as it realized it had been left alone, putting up its fists as it engaged Boris in Close Combat. The hits were heavy and numerous, but Boris was a true dragon and withstood the blows of his foe. Oscar looked past the fight and watched the poachers intently, delighting as they tried to scale the rock pile to escape.

"That's cute."

In spite of the danger the poachers find themselves in, they attempt to stand their ground and fight. That's their first mistake. Gavin's Lycanroc holds one of them down as the others release their Pokemon in a desperate bid to turn the tide.[break][break]

They scrabble against the rocks, and Gavin scoffs.[break][break]

"Speaking of Dhelmise..."[break][break]

His didn't appreciate being released outside of the ocean, but it was worth it to see the looks on their faces as the massive anchor sank into the dirt and fixed its compass-eye upon them. A WAVE OF SLUDGE was soon to follow, spraying poison against the rocks and all those who thought to run from their fate. They'd waited too long to change their minds. Lycanroc treats the Haunter to ROUGH PLAY, carving through the ghost with its claws and teeth.

Splashed against the rocks by sludge, the poachers would fall to the ground as the wave receded. They took a few delirious glances across the battlefield before passing out. Oscar briefly pondered if it was the impact against the rocks or the poison that knocked them out, but eventually he decided he didn't really care.

Boris got sick of defending against the medicham, and took its momentary startled reaction to the Sludge Wave as an opportunity to attack. Boris swung its tusks against its opponent, swinging again to deliver a Duel Chop. Both hits took the medicham by surprise, slamming it down to the ground. Boris then turned, casually bashing the medicham unconscious with Iron Tail before returning to Oscar.

When Boris neared, Oscar returned him to his pokeball. He took in the aftermath and whistled with delight. "Assholes didn't stand a chance." Oscar turned his back on the unlucky poachers, who surely will reconsider trying to steal castform again. Oscar knocked on Toxapex's top, indicating that she should open. Toxapex opened up, revealing a terrified and trembling castform. Luckily it seemed to shocked to move, otherwise it might have ran away.

Oscar looked to Gavin, "So, what should we do with this little guy?"
