The battle for this evening would be unofficial - the badge would be, hopefully, but Emma had requested a privatized battle out of the public eye entirely. Her use of her not recently acquired but more recently used shadow Zoroark would be her partner for this task. She had trained Katherine herself, and she intended to find out just how strong the woman had become.[break][break]

She was proud of her, deep down, though she'd never admit to it. Emma was a prideful beast, but perhaps the woman's pride in her pupil would be evident in the fact that she'd even bothered to show up. Katherine's official training was over, this was now a test of strength and merit - and for herself, as well.[break][break]

In an open palm, Emma rolls a dark-tinted pokeball across her fingers. She glances up as Katherine approaches, and she squeezes the ball in her hand. [break][break]

Katherine was looking forward to their fight all day long. She had to tackle some of her gym duties earlier than usual and finish a couple of challenges with haste just so she could take the rest of the day off, but it was definitely worth it.

It's not every day that she sees one of the few people from Rocket that she genuinely liked.

"Emma, it's good to see you." The gym leader maintains a calm expression to not let on how excited she was. She truly wanted to avoid embarrassing herself. "Hm... It's different. Definitely not what I am used to. But I don't hate it, and I've been doing a pretty good job so far." She didn't want to attest to that herself, but hey, no one dared to voice any complaints yet.

"How do you feel about Walsh?" It's the big elephant in the room, there's no denying it. Everyone had an opinion about the new boss. He put up quite the show on his first day in office, but the reviews came mixed.

Though her tone is flat, there's a twitch to her lip that matches the way her gaze softens - brief but evident of her own mutual affection for the woman. She glances away, breaking contact for a moment in order to regain some semblance of aloof control.[break][break]

"You earned it. Just.. be careful."[break][break]

Her pride in the woman is subtle and she doesn't dwell on it. Best not to let it get to her head, or at least that's the excuse she gives herself. Emma's concern is also worn uncharacteristically boldly on her sleeve, something that surprises even the cold lone wolf.[break][break]

The woman does, however, hesitate to glance back at her upon mention of Walsh. Her expression remains painfully neutral.[break][break]

Always. Being impulsive and following her instincts, at this point, was expected from her. It’s a trait Katherine wears proudly. Shame is incapable of pervading those thick walls of vanity she surrounds herself with. Some are convinced it’s her hubris, others a superpower. The truth it is, it happened to be both.

A soft touch against her capsule’s button releases her Froslass, who eyes the Rocket Beast with a curious stare.

“Not really. It’s just, you know, a new boss. He came bearing gifts like he’s freaking Santa Claus himself. I am sure you have an opinion about it.”

And whether if Emma would like to voice it or not, the gym-leader wouldn’t hold it against her. Katherine’s ghost-type sets up a HAIL in the meantime, preparing the battlefield for the fight.

“We’re ready when you are.”

But she smirks once again, another fleeting expression that is quickly consumed by the void of expression she is so characteristically known for. Sharp golden eyes meet Katherine's purple ones, her gaze intense and unwavering. She does not give the woman's Froslass a glance, mostly because of the cold trickle of discomfort that spills down her spine. Fuck, she hated ghosts.[break][break]

"He wants our trust and loyalty."[break][break]

But, ultimately, Emma really didn't have an opinion about it - or Walsh himself. He had been an important pillar of power during Silas' reign. A part of her felt a twinge of concern that, under his rule, they may fall into the hellish steps of famine and misfortune that had killed Silas, but she was holding onto hope. Hope, and the promise that Walsh had made that night, the plan he had for Rocket.[break][break]

Emma takes a deep breath as Kat announces the battle could begin. The cold air stings her lungs as the HAIL is manifested before her. It sticks to her dark hair and melts against her skin, stinging on impact. But her hands are deft as they reach for her own pokeball. Once pressed, it releases the malevolent and salivating form of her shadow-cursed Zoroark.[break][break]

"Have you met Mephisto yet?"[break][break]

The brute begins to chuckle, a guttural noise bubbling to the surface. He moves quickly, disappearing amongst the snow and ice with his AGILITY. [break][break]

“Oh, yes. He does. And he’s willing to earn it one way or another, isn’t he?”

It’s an educated guess, but one that’s backed by what little evidence the gym leader had to operate with. “A legendary pokemon, the clown, whatever Dominic is now— all of it came at the right time to set the stage for him.” And it couldn’t possibly be a coincidence.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he’s counting on it to serve as a distraction.”

What Walsh had to hide, however, was a whole other subject that a single battle wouldn’t be enough to cover.

The shadowfied Zororak draws Katherine’s attention as soon as it sets its paws on the snow-covered ground. Her eyes meet with the dark-type’s just before it disappears into the storm.

“No, I haven’t had the pleasure yet, but he’s beautiful.”

Almost as if mimicking the actions of the illusion-wielding pokemon, Froslass disappears and blends into the hailing snow. SNOW CLOAK, her ability, keeps her hidden only for an AURORA VEIL to spread across the battlefield, painting it with the shades and colors of a rainbow.

Emma regards Katherine with cold indifference, but beneath the surface the woman is attempting to discern what it is that Kat is alluding to and insinuating. She had been given a gift, a boon of unrealized power, and she was openly suggesting a fashion of favoritism or some alleyway of it. The woman blinks, returning her gaze to Katherine's ghost-type. It brings her no further comfort, watching the Pokemon's ethereal form shimmer like that. Creepy.[break][break]

"Then stay alert, Katherine, so you aren't disoriented by such a distraction."[break][break]

Mephisto growls as he appears, his paws sinking into the soft snow. But the moment he moves, his illusion wipes away those footprints as he moves. There is no trace of him as his body becomes just as incorporeal as the ghost-type before him. He melts into the background, blending into the hailstorm, the blizzard. Only his eyes show up from time to time as he leers at his opponent, a cheshire's grin spreading across exposed canines.[break][break]

And, the moment the Froslass utilizes an aurora veil, Mephisto snatches it. The hazy shimmer is mirrored, protecting the Zoroark as well. On the heels of his prior agility, the Zoroark continues to move, never lingering in one place for too long. [break][break]

It almost sounds like an apology, but it isn’t in her nature to ask for forgiveness. If anything, her words reek of dry sarcasm and a lack of honesty.

The vibrant shades and colors provided by Froslass’s AURORA VEIL are SNATCHED without struggle, as the battle ensues between the two indiscernible pokemon. Despite the lack of clarity, Katherine doesn’t lose her aim and focus. After all, it’s her purpose to provide it.

To guide her own through any storm.

“If you can’t see it, aim wide, Frost.”

And she does.
The ghost breathes an ICY WIND, intent on capturing as much area as she can in order to catch the Zoroark within the attack’s range and also slow it down.

Emma has a note of humor attached to the statement, and a raised eyebrow to go along with it.[break][break]

With the aurora veil now on Emma's side of the field, Mephisto is left at an advantage, if only temporarily. She can see the shades of purple and black, his fur painted against the ice and snow. But he is fading, a flicker of movement, an illusion of light against fallen snow.[break][break]

So when Katherine orders her Froslass to aim wide, Mephisto does not bother to waste energy dodging.[break][break]

The aurora veil, coupled with his natural agility and fleet footwork does excellent work in preventing debilitating damage. The icy wind ruffles his fur, covering him in a layer of snow. If anything, it almost helps disguise him better, allowing him some realism to go along with his perfect illusion.[break][break]

And to retaliate, the shadowy Zoroark fires back a malevolent night daze.[break][break]

Failing to catch their prey proves to be the hardest task in this challenge. Both Zoroark and Froslass were masters of disguise, and each of them managed to utilize its talent to the fullest.

It can only last so long, however. Emma’s beast surrenders its advantage the moment it shoots the NIGHT DAZE, revealing its location.

“Go,” Katherine remarks and extends her arm to point directly at the dark-type attack for her partner, who in tandem, understands that her path was no different than that of the attack. She pushes through the beam and sacrifices her own health in order to reach the illusionist.

“You’re right, it is. But you’ve trained me well enough to look past such tricks,” As if on cue, Froslass reaches her target in the same instant. Pursuing her lips, the specter leans close, intent on utilizing a DRAINING KISS to recover her health.

The night daze is a beacon, a taunt. It reels the Froslass in, and the Pokemon attempts to utilize a draining kiss in order to close the distance and regain health. Within it, the hail seems to disappear even though it still hammers at their skin. The reduced damage from the aurora veil still stands, and the Zoroark's fur is dusted with snow. [break][break]

The field undergoes a change without a special announcement, let alone a warning.

The MEAN LOOK manages to capture Katherine’s Froslass in an illusion unlike any other, causing both the hail and the aurora veil to dissipate into nothing, as if rays of sunlight pierced through the skies to even out the field. In reality, none of that was true. Zoroark’s illusion worked on the mind, rather than altered physics.

Yet, it mattered little. It was just as effective thanks to how little Froslass knew.

The ice-type searches for clues around the field with its eyes, appearing puzzled still. Nevertheless, her guard remains up. She doesn’t attack, nor does she hide. The ball is at their court.

There is a predatory grin, lips curled back to reveal sharp, pearly teeth. Saliva drools past black gums and lip line, breath haggard and exaggerated.[break][break]

Although the shadow Pokemon has not yet been officially detected, the fact that the Froslass has not moved or presented a threat is indicative of its uncertainty.[break][break]

It was time to end this battle, and Mephisto now had the means to do it.[break][break]

"We don't play with our targets, Mephisto."[break][break]

Emma chastises, and the beast relents. It doesn't drop the MEAN LOOK, but he does drop to his paws. In a burst of AGILITY, he eats up the distance, prepared to devour. In a dramatic display of aggression, the Zoroark presents his fangs and dark abilities in a terrible NIGHT DAZE, the effects malevolent and painful should they find their mark.[break][break]

Through the darkness, Zoroark’s eyes are ignited with an eerie glow as the NIGHT DAZE is performed. The dark energy is concentrated in a fashion fit for the shadow predator, revealing its location during such a process. That, fortunately, allows Froslass to prepare herself and brace for impact.

Mephisto was coming.

He was almost here.

And when it finally does reach the dainty ghost, it’s met with soft affection, manufactured love. Much like a pair of lovers reunited, Froslass is unable to stop herself from rushing into the beast’s arms, lips puckering in preparation for a DRAINING KISS.

The two moves are executed simultaneously. Health is drained to recover the damage inflicted by the NIGHT DAZE, which also pushes the ghost-type back, ending the kiss prematurely.

Mephisto is not a beast capable of affection. No one's lips, not even Emma's if she were ever so bold or inclined had been pressed to his cheek. So upon nearing the Froslass and seeing the puckered lips, the brute is quick to PROTECT, bouncing backward to avoid the impact.[break][break]

With space now put between them, Mephisto growls. Saliva drools from the edges of his blackened gums, splashing to the floor. He breathes heavily but this time, he isn't afraid of being found. The Zoroark stalks back and forth, pacing and circling the ice-type Pokemon while the MEAN LOOK induced darkness lingers.[break][break]

And when the opportunity would rise, a steady barrage of disorienting, mid-range EXTRASENSORIES would pulse from different directions. If he could not get close to the Pokemon without the threat of being kissed, he would keep his distance until she crumbled. It was just a matter of time.[break][break]
