mcflurry's bandages ached under the sheer cold of shoal cave.

of course, her entire body hurt a little bit. the frostbite nipped at her all-but-useless boots, her ragged fiorelian winter gear having been scrounged up from the recesses of her closet.

but that didn't matter, did it?

no. what mattered was getting better. being useful.

so she'd stop talking about herself, and just dive deeper into the cave, feeling it get colder and colder. it didn't matter. it didn't matter.

a bergmite traveled harmlessly across the ceiling. mcflurry called on her poke ball.

"use toxic."

within five minutes, the bergmite had fallen to the ground in a frothing heap.

mcflurry trudged onwards.

"She's gone where, now?"[break][break]

Those were the words that preceded Gavin's flight across the ocean and saw him landing upon the frosted shore outside of Shoal Cave, breath misting in front of him. He carries vivid memories of the last time he'd set foot in this place, the dangers within. Then, he'd braved them in the hopes of appealing to Articuno. Now, he's here to stop one of their grunts from marching to their death.[break][break]

A childhood spent in frigid Circhester sees Gavin well-prepared for the cold, scarf wrapped tight around his face and a thick winter coat blocking out the chill. It's his Sandslash that accompanies him, the feral creature of shadow frightening off anything that dared stray close. They step over the ailing body of a Bergmite, foam still leaking from its maw.[break][break]

Sandslash snarls when it sees Mcflurry, remembering her Arctozolt, but a silent signal from Gavin holds it at bay.[break][break]

"What the hell are you doing, Mclaren?"[break][break]

His voice, though muffled from the scarf, echoes in the chilly cave.

mcflurry's several stories deep into the cave at this point. the air turns chilly enough to start freezing over any static water that might be there.

except it's made even worse, by her pokemon's snow warning ability.

as her abomasnow finishes wood hammering a piloswine into the ground, mcflurry's head snaps to the new voice, her pale face almost blank with bemusement.

the underground air currents bellow as a winter gust picks up in the middle of summer.

her bandages start to ache again.

"what does it mclook like, boss...?"

she asks, her voice slow. trailing. without tone.

"i'm... training."

Though he'd expected as much upon hearing that she'd run off to Shoal Cave before recovering from her injuries, it's immediately apparent that there's something off about Mcflurry. He gets paid more than most in the organization, but Gavin Merlino does not get paid enough for this. He suppresses a sigh.[break][break]

"For what, your death?" A critical gaze sweeps over her sub-par attire. "We have training accommodations at HQ."[break][break]

The flurries caused by her Abomasnow seems to suit the Sandslash; it cloaks itself in the haze of white, nigh invisible but for the dark hue of its spines.[break][break]

"Were you not told to rest?"[break][break]

It's not rhetorical; he hadn't followed up with her treatment, given what had happened with Wendy Peterson.

her shivering hand presses against her bandages as they ache more and more. but her pale face doesn't change.

"no, just the. mmc. old-fashioned way. i find it... better."

she falls silent for a moment when faced with the next question, but the silence itself answers it. she absolutely had a bed rest order.

"it — i feel fine."

she answers as coldly as the air around her, before her body language tells gavin she's about to turn around and walk away, further into the cave.

"'m... mcsorry for bothering you. but i need to get... stronger, mcc. you don't — you can — can leave, i'll be fine..."

In a way, she reminds him of the bullheaded youth he'd once been — the lengths he would've gone to prove himself. He's not much different now, tempered though he's been through age and experience. It's almost impressive.[break][break]

she spits that last part out, indignation and incredulity mixed bitterly in her mouth. even as her body starts shivering, her eyes lock onto gavin's, and she shakes her head as he speaks.

this man. this man just didn't understand how people worked, did he? he really didn't get how — why people do the things they do.

"you, you, you — you don't care. i don't know why you're — you're trying to mcfucking pretending to care."

she grits her teeth to prevent them from clattering, and her eyebrows furl as the hate dips itself in the ice under her feet.

(energy balls up, roars. it's primal, hateful. it wants to kill — it's underneath her feet, glowing, and it wants to kill —)

"if i don't get — if don't do this, rocket mckills me for being mcuseless. if i do this, i get better, i won't — i won't die! so — why mcbother? what do you mcwant from me? huh?"

Mcflurry snaps at him, and Gavin's calm turns cold as the ice beneath their feet.[break][break]

"You've got it backwards, actually." Lips pull back from teeth in a soundless snarl, but his tone remains soft, low. "You think I'd have left the comfort of my office to follow you into this frigid hell if I didn't care?"[break][break]

Sensing the change in his mood, the Sandslash responds by intensifying the hail around them into a howling BLIZZARD. Ice pelts his skin before Gavin lets out a sharp whistle, signalling the viscous Pokemon should stand down.[break][break]

"Rocket is my fucking family," Gavin hisses. "You think I'd take out a weak link because I get off on it? No. I'd do it to protect the rest of the damn chain. I'm hard because I have to be."

mcflurry nearly collapses from the sudden blast of wind and hail and snow, her shivering becoming even worse. she can't hold her teeth back from clattering now.

(how wasn't he even reacting to this? he was a monster — kill. need to kill him — need to fight and kill —)

"you, you, you — i, i..."

between the cold and her anger, mcflurry can't talk. her body's so, so cold. everything aches.

"you're all — psychopaths, rocket is full of mcfucking psychopaths, f-f-f-family? are you — cazzata! porco d-d-dio!"

there was a flash of poke ball light within the snow, and then the clashing sound of another one opening. the telltale eyes of a glalie glared gavin down from the other side of the cave.

the shining orb of protect suddenly surrounded mcflurry, and in a brief moment of clarity, she could be seen taking relief from the cold, spraying an ice heal on her fingers.

"shit... shit..."

She's furious, and her anger provides the spark to ignite his own. His features contort into a soundless snarl. Psychopaths. It's a word that can be applied to many Rockets, but that doesn't stop the fury that claws in his chest.[break][break]

He recognizes the language, the curses she spits.[break][break]

The pokeball's flash reflects off his glasses, and his amber eyes burn with warning as it fades. He hasn't forgotten what happened last time, with the Arctozolt. It could easily have killed them both if the tunnel had collapsed.[break][break]

"You'd better control your Pokemon."[break][break]

It seems to be protecting her, and Gavin takes no issue with that: he turns to survey his Sandslash and ensure the feral Pokemon remained subdued. It seethes under cover of the hailstorm, heavy breaths echoing through the cave, but it does not attack.[break][break]

Another pokeball is plucked from his belt, this time revealing the towering form of a Coalossal whose presence brings relief from the biting air and melts the hailstones that stray too close. Gavin pulls the scarf down around his neck. "Like it or not, you're one of us now, Mcflurry. And some of us," for he knew it did not apply to them all, "look out for our own."

(everything she needs, everything she ever needed to make herself worthwhile to anyone, anyone here in this godforsaken region, so far away from home —)

home, which had everything she loved, all the beauty and warmness and happiness and love and the little children playing with balls and the rangers with their capture stylers and the —

(control. control she had over her life, control she had over her pokemon, control she had over people, but now, now, now she needs to kill, now she needs to hurt people to make any sense, now she needs to —)

'look out for our own'? is he out of his goddamn mind? what is she saying? of course he is. she needs to —

ancient fire burns under mcflurry's skin, and she clenches her teeth as her eyes turn piercing white, her irises just plain disappearing in the bright light.

"— vincible!"

a pocket underneath her coat glows through all her layers of clothing, and the thrum of mega evolution pulls the entire section of the cave into a deep pressure, and a sphere of shining power started expanding and refracting under the deep, frozen lake beneath the two of them —

the center section of the frozen floor shatters in a flurry of fractals and crystals, and mcflurry's glalie's jaw unhinges and snaps out of its own skull.

the mega glalie's cry echoes fiercely behind his trainer — and mcflurry's low, gravelly roar joins in.

as its unhinged jaw bellowed, a superpowered blizzard suddenly covered the entire area, sending a storm of wind towards gavin and coalossal, exponentially worse than the snow warning. all ability to see was just — gone. the entire room was whited out.

He is no stranger to evolutionary energy, the blinding haze of light. He remembers the thrill of his Steelix evolving for the first time, the raw surge of power that had burned through them both. It was a high like no other.[break][break]

Mcflurry's mistake is in turning that power against him.[break][break]

"Rich, calling us psychopaths!" he snarls over the howling blizzard. "Call off your Glalie unless you want to see it hurt."[break][break]

He looks to his own Pokemon with intent, their figures largely obscured by the blizzard. Ice pelts his skin and the cold bites deep, right down to bone. Gavin struggles against the force of it to make his way toward Coalossal's warmth. The heat given by its FLAMING BODY counteracts the worst of the cold, and provides just enough visibility for him to direct it. It fires a TAR SHOT toward the offending ice-type; a move that would cause no further problem other than slowing Glalie unless it troubled them further.

that part makes her falter. a small part of mcflurry's human side tries to claw itself out of the instinctual, feral muck of the energy surrounding her.

(don't stop. stop fighting. fight him. he's evil. evil kills. kill him. except mcflurry's starting to realize that these are voices in her head and —)

mcflurry growls as she clenches her teeth. at the same time, though, she isn't moving, isn't talking. it's like a feral dog figuring out what the hell to do.

in the meantime, however, the tar begins to crystalize, freeze — but it doesn't break. the glalie shrieks in discomfort, but that itself causes another blizzard.

then, mcflurry moves. she starts trudging forward, trying not to get knocked over in her glalie's own winds. she walks to the center, and picks up the glalitite on the floor, grasping it in a fist.

and, just like that, the mega evolution energy cuts off, and mcflurry's left a pale, cold woman standing on the floor of one of the coldest places in hoenn. — but she doesn't at all seem phased by the chill, right now.

"...i don't. i don't get it. we mckill people. we ruin lives. we're disposable. there's nothing mcspecial about — about any of us. you're supposed to kill us off like mc-fucking livestock if we do shit like this."
