Just inside the glass door of the daycare looking out over the garden, Avery trembles with a broom clasped in her hands. Her hands are marred with cuts from sharp beaks and claws, and she has a very weak and very tiny Budew tucked into her coveralls. Her bottom lip wobbles with the beginning of a sob, but she holds it in. She has to be strong, and she has to go out there and be brave and swat those terrorizing Starly and Staravia away.[break][break]

They wanted to settle in her garden as young chicks -- or rather, she had let them. The woman had found an abandoned and broken nest full of eggs and she had taken them under her wing, literally, and raised them. Unfortunately, without a mother figure like a brave and beautiful Staraptor, they had fallen out of line and become aggressive and hungry. Bird seed just wasn't cutting it, apparently.[break][break]

And now the biggest and boldest of the group had rebelled and taken charge, effectively pushing Avery out of the nest. He had evolved past his Starly siblings and puffed his chest as a big, beautiful Staravia. And he had decided that it was snack time for his little brothers and sisters, and Avery's wonderful little garden of Budew were ripe for the picking.[break][break]

Avery hadn't had time to call for help, and her phone was inside behind the reception desk. She had been beating back birds for the better part of an hour or so all by herself. But surely someone had overheard her tears and her crying. She could only be pecked and scratched so long before even her tough (not so tough) exterior could be broken.[break][break]

She darts from inside, wielding her broom with a mournful sob. [break][break]

"No, stop it! Get away from them! Stop it, please!"[break][break]

Suddenly he was there, shielding the young woman. Ben had appeared from nowhere yet set to work doing his duty anyway. He had seen the distressed daycare worker out of the corner of his good eye being beaten back by the angry birds. He did not care for bullies, human or Pokemon. He raised his jacket to avoid being pecked in the face, but made damn sure his body blocked the pinkette from further harm.

A flash of light was released from him, exposing a Luxio. The cat snarled and hissed at the bird, swiping to get the creature away from its new trainer. Its ability - Rivalry - activated against the male flying type. A fierce thunder shock was sent its way, zapping it. "Protect t' Budew" Ben ordered from his spot. He could handle a few pecks and scratches. It was clear the woman wanted them safe.

Luxio spat and rushed the other birds circling the little bulbs. He stood over them, the fur along his spine spiked. Ben took the time to stare down the Staravia but his words were for the woman. "Ye okay, miss?"

Avery gasps as the nail of the Staravia catches her forearm. However, it seems to have glanced off of her, doing far less damage despite the blood that seeps from the scratch indicating otherwise. It appears that she has been rescued by a knight in shining armor, or one with an intimidating eyepatch. Feathers buffet her cheeks briefly before the haughty crow of the birds discontentment is the only thing that remains. Apparently someone had stepped in between her and her attacker, a tall blonde man with a funny accent.[break][break]

"W-what? Oh my gosh, be careful!"[break][break]

From under her armpit she pulls out a squirt bottle. With a few aggressive squeezes she sprays the incoming Staravia. It shakes its head, changing his directory and flying past them instead. Avery exhales, hand shaking from the arm that had been scratched. It's a nasty enough scratch that it both looks and feels painful, but the young woman does not seem the least bit encouraged to tuck away and hide from her attackers. There are a bundle of Budew at her ankles desperate to be saved.[break][break]

She continues to grip the handle of her broom, eyes wide with surprise as the man's Luxio jumps into the fray, standing overtop another bundle of Budew nearby. They hide beneath the feline's belly eagerly, whimpering and whining. The man does not look at her, but the rumble of his voice draws her attention to him nonetheless - though she had already sort of been looking. Her response is an immediate blush and she can't stop the nervous laugh that comes out of her mouth.[break][break]

"Been better, but y'know. Heroes gotta do what heroes gotta do."[break][break]

Not that she considered herself a hero.... oh dear. That's exactly what she had just insinuated.[break][break]

[attr="class","pinscroll"]Everyone was capable of bravery. That is what Benedict believed strongly in. She may think herself weak, but he could see she was a passionate young lady. Her protection of the small Budew - a Pokemon that many humans would look disappointingly down on - warmed his heart. "Ye did a good job" he told the stranger, especially grateful for the save. "do ye need help?" He sort of imposed his presence on her.

Luxio was still hissing at the circling birds. Sparks flew from its coat, but the Budew would be relatively safe from harm. Electricity did not shock or hurt them much. A weak bolt of electricity shot toward a diving Starly, zapping it. The bird squawked in alarm, taking off out of the garden. There were only a few left now, and the Luxio would continue to protect the small grass-types until they were gone. The smell of blood made the lion's nose twitch. Benedict may not have a good nose like him, but he recognized the iron-scent all the same.

Especially when he looked back to make sure she was fine. Worry crossed his features at the steady flow of blood. The Staravia had begun to circle back, intent on its own brand of revenge. "Take cover" he softly ordered her, not wishing for her to get hurt further "with yer Budew" the ones scattered around the girl's feet would be easy targets. Releasing another Pokemon, this time a Yamper, the small dog burst forward to meet the bird. "Nuzzle once it dives" he proclaimed. The puppy barked in understanding.

And waited for its chance.

She struggles to gather her thoughts, still blown away that this man had literally just stepped in to save her and to save her garden. People did that, sure, it was exactly what she would have done, what she hoped people would do. But to see him smiling at her, even from the corner of his eye, while helping defend her from a bunch of grouchy birds? It was enough to rattle anyone, surely.[break][break]

"Yes, yes I do. Umm-- they, the Starly. I raised them from eggs, but they umm-- they started attacking the Budew and I--"[break][break]

Arcs of lightning spring from the Luxio as he continues to defend the babies and it nearly brings Avery to a sob. But the sun is shining and she is strong and confident and fearless and she isn't about to let a bunch of hand-raised, hand-fed Starly act like pompous jerks. Especially not in front of a man she'd just met and been kind enough to compliment her, unprovoked.[break][break]

Her stammering isn't helping anyone, though, and she's a bit faint now that she's caught sight of her blood - thanks to Benedict unintentionally pointing it out. She'd seen him see it, and saw the note of worry, and had obviously looked down to see what it was that had made his brave expression falter in such a way.[break][break]

But she follows his instruction, pulling the Budew at her feet underneath her legs as she crouches to take cover. The man releases a second Pokemon and gives it an order. It breaks her heart, honestly, to see them fighting and to hurt these Starly in this way. She had raised them, they were her babies and she was helpless to defend them now - even though none of this was her fault.[break][break]

Avery is crying, wiping tears from her eyes with one hand as the other hand ushers Budew to stay close. They seem to be extremely calm despite the circumstances, as if her body is exuding a sweet scent.[break][break]

He understood now why the young lady was unable to lift a finger or Pokemon to the Starly. She had raised them, and it was probably hurting her inside to see them hurt by him. Ben felt they needed some tough love. "I won't hurt 'em" which was easier said than done. A zap or two wouldn't kill them but he had to do something about the nests. If they were so close to the Budew, they'd begin to fight again down the line.

"I'm a ranger, I can relocate 'em" he said now, making sure his body still protected the girl's. She had ushered her Budew to her side and hid like he asked, but things could happen. Luckily, his Pokemon had been trained to handle unruly wild ones. The Yamper charged, colliding with the Staravia as it shot forward. The puppy yapped, electricity forming from its unconventional nuzzle attack. The bird squawked.

Yamper was still very young, so the shock was not as damage-dealing. It was enough to make the bird back off and circle again, indignant. Ben took the time to eye the nests along the garden. It'd take too long to move them all when the birds were active. He'd have to catch and release later. "Luxio, Thundershock" he called out "Yamper, Nuzzle" he turned back to the girl "gonna hafta catch em... m' sorry."

He paused before adding "I'll move t' nests once they're in a Pokeball. Then release 'em later" another pause before he reassuringly smiled "I know a good place fer 'em nearby. Ye can visit 'em any time." And the poor Budew wouldn't be hassled. But outside of the orders, he waited for the girl's consent before attempting anything more.

Although he said he wouldn't hurt them, she knew better than to truly accept that. He had, after all, been encouraging his Pokemon to electrocute her beloved birds. Birds that had now been tearing her to pieces - but her birds, nonetheless.[break][break]

And she had been swatting them back with her broom. That wasn't exactly... pacifistic of her. [break][break]

The woman blinks up at him owlishly as he announces that he's a ranger. She could see it now, the ruggedness behind his stature. It was probably how he had lost his eye, why he was so patient, so confident. He had acted without thinking, knowing what he should do before he even did it. She breathed out a sigh, nodding her understanding. Though her stomach is still queasy, she does her best not to look at her arm.[break][break]

She winces as the birds dive-bomb again, tensing before... nothing, because Ben's Pokemon have stopped the attack again. Avery exhales, lip wobbling, as the ranger takes a look around at the trees surrounding the garden. There are only two nests and a dozen birds between them.[break][break]

"I-it's okay. Just, please, please try not to hurt them. They're just... they just don't have a proper mother figure."[break][break]

What she doesn't say out loud is that she had failed them. She was not a mother Staraptor, she hadn't had the strength or the assertiveness to try and keep them in line. She was soft, too soft, and they had taken advantage of that. She was ashamed.[break][break]

"Okay... okay. I trust you, I trust you."[break][break]

It broke her heart to see them go, but it was for the best. Several of her Pokemon had all ran and hid. What had been a safe place and a sanctuary had quickly turned into a nightmare. And it was all her fault.[break][break]

"Do what you have to do, just... be gentle with them."[break][break]

He wasn't out to be cruel or mean just cause they happened to lack... what was it? A mother figure. He quietly doubted it was the sole reason but he kept it to himself.

It was time to take down the alpha bird.

One who got too bold, who evolved before the others... The Staravia. It had placed itself above the girl's teachings, taking over in her absence. Yamper went first, shooting into the large bird with another Nuzzle. Luxio ignored the circling Starly in favor of zapping the Staravia from a distance, it's Thundershock effectively taking it down. It fell to the earth where Ben quickly captured it.

Without their leader, the other Starly cawed in alarm. A few of them attacked and a few of them flew away. Most of them hid behind the 'alpha' - the girl - in the Staravia's absence. They didn't touch the Budew after that. Picking up the Pokeball in his scarred hands, Ben turned and handed it to the girl. "I'm sorry" he said, regret pooling in his blue eye "I'll make sure t' fix him up."

Once she gripped the Pokeball, he could begin to work. Carefully approaching the nests, he takes one of them and places it on Luxio's back. The lion has joined him, leaving the poor Budew to re-group with Avery. The other nest he carries in his arms. Yamper goes to the girl, mentally checking her over and whining at the blood's presence. "Ah" Ben doesn't forget it either. His satchel is pecked but still available.

He gently places the nest on a nearby table and pulls out a first aid kit. Leaving the bandages and disinfectant near the girl, he balances the nest again. His satchel is back on his back. "Here ye go" he says now, returning to quiet cheer "I'll write down where t' nests will go" Ben promises to be back to let her know "but first we'll relocate 'em. Be back."

Adjusting the one he held in his arms, he makes to leave. Yamper bounces after him, with Luxio moving slowly behind the pair. He balances a nest on his back after all.

Avery does her best to not sob as she watches Benedict's Pokemon take charge. They move swiftly and with confidence, taking down the Staravia and scattering the rest of the smaller birds. The moment their self-appointed leader is dethroned, Avery finds that several of the more timid Starly have returned to her in a flurry of confusion, panic, and feathers.[break][break]

She lets out a shaky breath as Benedict captures the downed Staravia and returns to her, Pokeball in hand. He offers her an apology and she reaches for the Pokeball that he offers her. Her thumb smooths over its shiny surface and she breathes a silent apology for the Pokemon within. [break][break]

In the meantime, she settles onto her knees and tends to the Budew and Starly that crowd around her. The Budew in her pocket chirps, peeking out from her overalls chest pocket. Benedict gathers the two nests, giving one to his Luxio and the other he cradles carefully in his arms. However, the man stops short at a nearby table to pull out a first-aid kit. She is otherwise preoccupied and distracted by the time he approaches her with it.[break][break]

Avery exchanges him the Pokeball for the kit, giving him a meek nod as she rises to her feet. [break][break]

"Be safe. The Starly will follow you because you have their nests."[break][break]

She wipes tears out from under her sweat-stained cheek and lets out a sigh. The woman shakes the first-aid kit before heading inside to clean herself up and tend to her cut. It throbs even now, making her face pale and her stomach churn uncomfortably.[break][break]

Ben nods, careful to handle the nests with care. He turns and exits the garden through the fence, Luxio at his heels. The man is sorry for the trouble the girl went through. His heart goes out to her.

But even he knows, as gentle as he is most times, that sometimes you have to fight. The Staravia was not going to stop. The Starly were not going to stop. The girl would be pecked and bloody, in more distress and probably a few Budew would have been killed. If shocking a few birds was all it took to prevent such a fate, Ben would gladly do it again.

And he would return, like promised, after the Pokemon were relocated. The girl is right; the Starly followed after him and settled once the nests were placed high in a tree. He makes sure to return through the main entrance this time, writing down the GPS location of the nests in a nearby woodland. He also draws a quick map, circling the place a few times. He notes down his name and personal number too.

Just in case she had questions or couldn't find the nests. He hopes the girl is fine - Ben doesn't see her back out in the daycare. She could be in the garden but he doesn't want to overstay his welcome. The man leaves promptly, letting her figure out her emotions in the privacy of her house.

Avery averts her eyes from his sadness for fear that his forlorn expression may truly bring her to tears. While he is gone, presumably for hours or so, Avery has plenty of time to wash herself up, disinfect her arm and patch it up. It isn't nearly as bad as it had seemed, but adrenaline and fear had encouraged it to bleed a lot, as well as her constant movement.[break][break]

There are cuts on her face, too, but they are shallow and not serious.[break][break]

When Benedict returns, she has tea waiting and cookies set out - freshly made. The Budew from her pocket is set in a small flower pot inside on a windowsill. The front door rings and she approaches quickly, anticipating his return. She looks a little more put-together and a little less frightened. Unfortunately, she chases after him too late. She finds the note and phone number he had left behind, however and, when given time later in the day to reach out, she texts him.[break][break]
