it's the rising."

Moonlight spills over the tall grasses, highlighting their gentle motion brought along by the ever constant breezes that flow through Route 117. Alecto knows this area well, so she doesn't hesitate as her boots step over fallen logs and splash into puddles left from earlier rains.

Several tomes are neatly tucked under her arm, which she arranges into a circle as soon as she finds a spot she deems acceptable for what she has in mind. White chalk materializes in her hand, and the woman starts drawing symbols onto the rocky ground. She's efficient and meticulous with her work -- she has to be, otherwise this won't work. The timing has to be exactly right.

This particular ritual has been months in the making. Weeks spent pouring over books and articles, long nights stretched into mornings of feverish research and finally, finally she can put into practise what she's learned.

Alecto doesn't even wince when a small blade cuts the palm of her hand, blood spilling onto the ground beneath her. She's barely breathing, moss-green eyes following the preparation. A cold breeze makes the hair on the back of her neck stand on end.

Just a few more moments -- and she'll have her answers.

As if in response to her efforts, the sky darkens over Hoenn's Route 117. Clouds gather close and obscure the moon. Rain comes down in heavy sheets, soaking the earth and washing away chalk-drawn symbols. Puddles swell, and Gavin folds the umbrella that had failed to keep the downpour at bay.[break][break]

"Thank you, Castform."[break][break]

The creature's FORECAST sees it shift its typing to better match their surroundings as Gavin turns his attention to a now-drenched Zeraora.[break][break]

"Now, I know you're worried that you'll miss, but this should make sure that you don't. Go on. Thunder, and target that old tree over there."[break][break]

It was dead already, and Gavin posits it won't be missed. THUNDER roars overhead, heralding a bolt of lightning that cleaves through the rotting wood like a knife through butter. The tree groans as if in agony before one of its larger branches crashes down over a ritual site Gavin hadn't known was there. If the sudden rainstorm hadn't served to disrupt Alecto's business, this certainly would.[break][break]

Gavin offers the Zeraora a curt nod. "Well done."

Alecto looks up at the sky when one of her symbols is smudged by a single, annoying drop of rain. Frowning at the gathering clouds, she has but moments to decide how to salvage her whole preparation. With a whispered curse, Alecto calls forth her Galarian Yamask and soon the shimmer of a CRAFTY SHIELD envelops the arcane symbols drawn on the ground.

The scent of ozone is her only warning before a THUNDER strikes at the closest tree, and one of its branches shoots outward and down. Alecto's quick to move out of the way as the branch falls--

Straight onto her carefully designed ritual.

For a moment she's too dazed to react. Then her eyes fall on the drenched books, the smudged symbols, the fallen chalice and she feels something in her go cold. It turns absolutely freezing when she manages to catch a few words coming from the nearby tall grasses.

Someone did this. Someone had ruined her months of hard work to- what, play with lightning?

The cultist moves through the tall grasses with light feet, uncaring of the rain. She stops when she spies a head of blond hair and some sort of ridiculous-looking feline pokémon. "What," her voice drawls out, absolutely deadpan, "do you think you're doing?"

She will kill them.

Ever-wary of being scolded, Zeraora flattens its ears and ducks behind Gavin when the woman bursts from the grass to accost them. The scientist ignores the claws that dig into his calf, turning instead to level the woman with a cold amber stare.[break][break]

"Minding my own business, unlike some. Do you have a problem?"[break][break]

There's a threatening edge to his tone, a sharpness to his posture. The muscles in his left hand twitch as if prepared to reach for something.

There's no visible reaction to Gavin's threatening words. Alecto's green eyes are like shards of ice as she looks the man over, filing away details for future study, but otherwise utterly dismissive of his aggressive posture.

"I would be, as you said, minding my own business - if not for the tree that ruined my work."

She shifts her gaze to the Zeraora, lips curling in distaste. "And I suppose that one is the creature to blame?" She doesn't miss the twitch in Gavin's hand, and Throne, her Galarian Yamask, moves slightly forward to put itself between the two humans.

Zeraora lets out a low hiss as the woman sets her gaze on it.[break][break]

"What work of yours can be so easily disrupted by a fallen tree?" A flash of fire had licked up the trunk where the bolt had struck, but the rain was quick to douse it. "It could just as easily have been nature itself to interrupt... whatever it is you're doing."[break][break]

Fur bristles along the spine of the thunder cat as it CHARGES itself with electricity. Gavin's leg is uncomfortably shocked, but he dares not look away from the girl and her Pokemon, who has positioned itself between them.[break][break]

"Back off," he warns, cold.

The arched eyebrow Alecto throws Gavin's way suggests that she might think him simple-minded. No matter how focused she'd been on her work, it would've been impossible to have missed the approaching rain clouds - and there hadn't been any to speak of when she'd arrived.

So Alecto doesn't even bother dignifying that particular sentence with a reply. Her attention is instead caught by the electricity running along the fur of the cat-like pokémon behind the blond man, confirming her suspicions.

"Really," her words are dispassionate, yet there's an undercurrent of threat in them, "so your electric creature definitely wasn't the one who ruined my many months of work."

Throne does not move from its position despite the man's words. Faced with a wave of hostility from a bigger, unknown pokémon, it does what it was taught to do. There is a subtle, near-invisible shadow that briefly surrounds the Galarian Yamask, as it attempts to level out the playing field by using a POWER SPLIT.

notes: i'm not sure how power split would work here. does yamask get bulky? lol but here we go

"Oh, I'm not saying that at all." Gavin smirks; she'd misunderstood. "This storm was absolutely our doing. But who would you have blamed if it wasn't? Would you have shouted at the sky?"[break][break]

His sneer twists into something more dangerous when shadows dance subtly across her Pokemon. Did they mean to fight?[break][break]

Sensing the shift in Gavin's mood, the thunder cat prowls out from behind its master's protection to face off against its ghostly foe. Yellow whiskers like bolts of lightning crackle with electricity as it continues to CHARGE itself up.[break][break]

"We did not come here to fight but if your Pokemon attacks, I will hold nothing back."

"I would have blamed the weather forecast." The tone of Alecto's voice is as dry as sandpaper; she sounds slightly bored even if the flash of emotion in her eyes suggests otherwise. The woman gives the Castform by the side a pointed glance, as if she were blaming it instead of the weather station -- after all, she's perfectly aware of the power they hold over weather patterns.

Unfortunately, Alecto appears decidedly unimpressed with Gavin's words. Her body tenses, however, when the Zeraora prowls out from behind his trainer and electric energy crackles in a display meant to be intimidating. To Alecto, it looks like a wet, overgrown cat.

"Down, kitty." The smile she sends their way is as sharp as the dagger she's used to cut open her hand - and the way she says those words makes it hard to understand if she's referring to the human or the actual pokémon. Maybe she's referring to both.

The gauze around her hand has turned a deep crimson, but Alecto pays it no mind. A shadow passes over her face when Gavin threatens her - and for the first time there's an actual hint of a cold fury in her features. "I dare you to take a step closer, kitty."

She issues a dare, and Gavin's smile sharpens to match. He takes a single, deliberate step toward Alecto, and his Zeraora understands the intent. It prowls forth to match him, growling. There's agility in the feline, even weighed down as it was by its damp fur.[break][break]

Gavin had tried to diffuse the situation. Now, he returns her challenge her with his gaze. "Or else...?"

Throne shifts slightly, and a shimmer erupts like a wall between the two opponents, not unlike the CRAFTY SHIELD that it'd used to protect the ritual site from being ruined by the downpour. Sharp green eyes watch from behind its protective screen, first focusing on the Zeraora's approach, then zeroing in on the man's face as he speaks.

Instead of stepping up to his dare and attacking him, Alecto cocks her head to the side slightly. "Do you know what hostile ghosts do to a human? They don't usually bother with the body; they just want what's inside."

She would know. She'd studied this kind of thing extensively. A couple of seconds pass before Throne abruptly phases out of existence like the ghost it is.

Zeraora's tail lashes from side to side in anger as a barrier is erected between them. Though the feline makes no attempt to bypass nor otherwise interact with the shimmering shield, it crouches as if readying itself to pounce.[break][break]

Perhaps he should have been frightened as the ghost disappeared from sight. There is, admittedly, a part of him that considers what sort of fate might befall him if he can't fend it off. Could it possess him? It had never happened before. It's this knowledge he takes comfort in. His mind was a sanctuary; he was the only one who could penetrate it.[break][break]

"You've no idea who I am, what I'm capable of, and yet you're threatening me. Do you have any idea how stupid that is?"[break][break]

From his pocket, a phone buzzes before his Rotom emerges from its confines. The damp ground beneath them is charged with electric terrain.[break][break]

"I'm no stranger to ghosts."

Sparks of electricity run up Alecto's arms as she moves them. When she looks up, she can almost see the static in the air -- charged with enough energy to send a tingle down Alecto's spine. There's only a flimsy barrier between herself and the increasingly angry pokémon on the other side, but Alecto's more interested in the cold, amber eyes just behind it.

Her eyes narrow at his words, and there's something under the cold anger in her voice. Something that might hint at curiosity. "Yes, who are you?" she drawls out, more to herself than to the man. She has never let anger blind her to the possibility of gaining some knowledge and today would be no exception.

A subtle flick of her hand releases a second pokémon into the battlefield, the Claydol floating silently close to her. At the same time there's a strange shimmer right behind Gavin's head. Throne, the Galarian Yamask, would phase into existence just long enough to swipe at a few blonde hairs before phasing out again and reappearing next to its trainer.

"Mm, that's a question you should have asked before you threatened me."[break][break]

He neither sees the Yamask reappear nor hears its subtle movements, but his Rotom watches for him. With its telekinesis, it holds back its fellow ghost-type and prevents it from robbing its trainer of his hair.[break][break]

Gavin is familiar with Claydol. It will be unaffected by the electricity that surges through the grass and tickles in the air. He has other Pokemon. Perhaps she does as well, but his own are ruthless in their defense of him. His Lycanroc snarls as he releases it, red eyes bright in the gloom. The deep blue of the werewolf's fur seems to draw in the moonlight and the charged air causes that fur to ripple and raise along its spine. In the quiet, Lycanroc's breaths are heavy and loud.[break][break]

"I'm somewhat of a collector. I'm sure I can match whatever you've got." White teeth flash. "You don't want that."
