Blood drips from the tips of her fingers to mix with the mud and rain. Gavin had not missed it. Nor had he missed the distinctive purple eye and runic tablet of the Yamask; Galarian Yamask. It had not been until the girl began stacking the field with Pokemon that Gavin had released one who could contend with it, for it hadn't been the Pokemon he was threatening.[break][break]

Rotom had left his phone when it had gone haywire due to all the electricity in the air. Between that and the now-raging storm, a signal would be all but impossible to find.[break][break]

Feel free to impress me, is a challenge, and soft laughter ghosts past Gavin's lips before he takes the beast ball in hand. It was unlikely anyone would believe the tale of a girl performing blood rituals. It's a chance he's willing to take.[break][break]

Lugia was rumoured to be seen during stormy nights, Guardian of the Seas who could strengthen those storms with a flap of its silver-white wings. This Lugia has wings of shadow, a dark span that drinks in the light of the moon. As always, Gavin is awed by its menacing presence. Though it opens its maw as if to shriek in fury, Gavin lifts his hand to beg its silence. Its red glare fixes him for a moment before it turns its gaze upon Alecto. So, too, does Gavin, the ghost of a smile light upon his lips.

There's something wrong.

Alecto searches cold amber eyes with her own, stilling her breath for a moment when the man brings forth a strange, modified version of a pokéball. The laughter that spills past his lips then is soft, but Alecto can hear a strange sort of triumph in it and - for the first time since she's stumbled upon this place -she feels like she's taken a wrong step somewhere.

A vertiginously wrong step.

Brief sparks of electricity still dance across her vision when a creature emerges from the strange ball, it's width extending to the edges of Alecto's vision.

Wings of midnight whisper across the downpour, darker even than the night around them. Darkness creeps along its flank, drinking in all the surrounding light, like there is a void within this creature and it is ravenous. Alecto can't help but think, despite the creeping sense of dread that has taken a hold of her, that this twisted version of Lugia is glorious.

It is impossible to miss the way it stops at Gavin's silent command. Unable to face its violent, crimson stare, Alecto looks instead down at the man that holds the leash. Her mind is busy scouring through every book and article she has read over the years, feverishly going through hundreds, thousands of pages - only to realize that this is something outside her own realm of knowledge.

Her hands twitch and she realizes she's gasping, yearning mixing with horror. She nearly takes a step forward before she knows what she's doing. How? The question slips past her lips without her meaning to, utterly hypnotized by the entity that stands before her.

Lugia's presence alone is threatening, like an invisible pressure was being exerted upon them. Though he has spent time with the corrupt creature enough to recognize that influence, even Gavin feels a chill creep up his spine. He is confident that Lugia will not attack him, but not immune to the intensity of its red-eyed stare.[break][break]

The girl, it seems, is beside herself.[break][break]

"I wouldn't get too close," he advises; Lugia's neck twists as its head rears back. Shadows gather in its maw. "It's not fond of strangers."[break][break]

Indeed, if Celeste Abbiati couldn't get through to it, there's little hope that anyone could. Yet Gavin still found himself trying. He treated the legendary with the same respect as all of his other Pokemon. He'd learned not to flinch or shy away from it when it turned its glare to him. He hoped, however vain that hope might be, to somehow get through to it some day. Shadow Pokemon were a marvel, and how rewarding would it be to form a bond with one like no other?[break][break]

"Perhaps your midnight ritual summoned something, after all." There's a touch of humour in Gavin's low timbre.

Alecto immediately stills, heart in her throat. The Lugia has shifted slightly, head rearing back as if on the cusp of attacking. Darkness gathers in its maw as it fixes its eyes upon her and Alecto can't help but shiver at the malevolence in that red gaze.

Now that fear has settled into her bones like an old friend, it makes way for the burning curiosity that has shadowed every step of Alecto's life. She inhales deeply, shakily, her eyes slowly and meticulously taking in every inch of the Shadow Lugia. Thoughts of her earlier research and the ritual gone wrong are wiped away from her mind as this new mystery unfolds beautifully in front of her.

Gavin's comment somehow makes it past the pounding in her ears, but it takes Alecto some time to react. Even more time to shift her eyes away from the beast and onto the man himself. She licks her lips, her mouth gone suddenly dry. "It certainly summoned something." Her voice is a little shaky, perhaps, but it is working. There is an unmistakable hunger in her voice, her usual stoic facade utterly shattered.

There is nothing she wouldn't do to be able to disassemble the world and peer at its truths.

"Would you-" She has to clear her throat, her moss-green eyes piercing into Gavin's, beseeching. "Would you perhaps like to discuss this over a cup of coffee?"

He had expected fear, had received fear, but it was something else entirely to see the unbridled curiosity that burns in her emerald stare. It's a look he's seen many times in mirrors, a hunger for all things beyond understanding. He recognizes, in that moment, a kindred spirit. It's possible that he's wrong, enchanted by the gloom of their surroundings, but—[break][break]

—but she asks for a discussion, of all things, and Gavin's teeth flash in a grin that's more genuine than anything she's seen thus far.[break][break]

He is a man of science, but a small part of him leaves room for superstition: perhaps her ritual had brought them together somehow, two like minds whose paths might never have crossed.[break][break]

"Why not?" With a flick of his wrist, his Pokemon relax. All but Lugia, whose very existence teetered on the edge of aggression. He smiles at it before returning it to the too-heavy ball at his hip. "I trust you know somewhere... quiet."
