"What about you, Emma?" Gavin brushes his hand across her cheek. "If you were always meant to be there for her, who was to be there for you?"[break][break]

He has only a fractured image of the love Emma had lost: a woman driven by a lust for power that Emma had somehow lost to that pursuit. He doesn't have the sweetest parts, the tender moments such as this where they held each other, comforted each other. He knows this, and yet he can't help but to resent the ghost of a relationship that had hurt her so.[break][break]

"It's one thing to be there for someone. You're here for me, always." He takes a pause to communicate his gratitude with a gentle smile. "It's quite another to try and save them from themselves. That was no one's responsibility but hers. And if I'm ever lost to you, I want you to curse my name and shit on my grave rather than blame yourself for my mistakes." He laughs, a strained attempt to inject humour into a somber situation. It fades, and his expression once again turns serious. "You are strong. She's the one who was weak. No one is strong enough to make up for that."[break][break]

In spite of his hatred for weakness, he conveys his words carefully and without malice. No matter how much he loathed this stranger for what she'd done to Emma, she had been Emma's love, once. That much was sacred.

It had never occurred to her because she had never needed anyone before. The missing piece had been the disconnected, detached sort of affection the two women had had for each other. They had loved each other, that was undeniable. But they had not been compatible, and it had driven a wedge in between them. Because try as Emma might to keep herself sanctioned off of those that loved her, how adamant she was that she didn't need them the same way she fought so hard to protect them - she did need the same in return.[break][break]

She needed someone to want her just as bad, to want to fight for and protect her, to be there.[break][break]

Emma closes her eyes, but she isn't fast enough to seal her tears behind them. One strays down her cheek, caught in the sweeping motion that Gavin uses to stroke her cheek. His touch is so warm and comforting that it nearly swallows her whole.[break][break]

And his attempt at humour brings a wash of relief and an involuntary sound from her throat that sounds like a strained gasp. She clenches her teeth as she presses her forehead to his chest, her hands trailing down his back to hold him looser.[break][break]

"I love you, Gavin."[break][break]

Emma, perhaps for the first time, allows herself to relax into his arms entirely. The man's comforting gestures press her closer into him and she twists her head to rest her cheek against his chest. Her fingers resettle and adjust their grip, and the woman shifts her weight to stand just a little bit closer.[break][break]

And when the rumble of his chest matches the voice that whispers above her head, she lets an exhausted, painful sob leave her throat. Her barriers have dropped and her frailty laid bare. [break][break]

Gavin's grip tightens briefly at her sob, as if by some instinct he wishes to physically fight off her pain. His hold is as protective as it is affectionate, and he doesn't let go.[break][break]

"You don't need to be," he reminds her, assures her, "but you already are, love."[break][break]

Her strength was what had attracted him to her, like a moth to flame; had it been anyone else in that dark alley, he would have let Rocket have them. Yet it had been her, a former Beast, and he'd always admired their number and aspired to be one of them. That she'd disappeared during Rocket's 'fall' hadn't mattered, for so many among them had fled from the tyranny they'd faced.[break][break]

But she'd come back, and she'd stayed, and it had been because of him — for him.

Her sob is stifled mostly out of sheer will. To cry was to show weakness, even if her weakness was nothing but an expression of her pain. But his embrace is tight, forgiving, and unbelievably relieving in its intensity. He doesn't let go and she clings to him desperately. She had come to depend on him, to trust him as her partner.[break][break]

Emma had fallen slowly, and then all at once. She had gone from an outcast, a lone wolf, to his partner.[break][break]

And his words wash over her with such force that she worries she might break. It's a miracle she doesn't. But it merely reinstates just how incredibly important he is to her and how desperately she needed to hear him say those words.[break][break]

He had truly saved her that day in the alley, and he had continued to save her every day since.[break][break]
