Oscar had already obtained the badges necessary to ascend to the rank of Rocket Beast, yet even after his promotion he found an opportunity to display his battle prowess. He had received a notification that his appointment with the new Rustboro Gym had been set, which came as a surprise to Oscar as he had completely forgotten he had signed up for that. At first he thought to cancel, but seeing as it was already difficult to get into most gyms he figured he could afford the attempt. Heck, it may even be fun.

He arrived precisely on time, displaying to the doorman his proof of appointment and his trainer idea (which currently remained under the alias of Samuel Osman). Oscar was allowed in, and after some further waiting he was lead to the arena. He was very impressed by the theming of this gym, the cavernous battleground was intimidating as it was awe inspiring. Even with the sun directly overhead, the open air arena was tinged with dark.

As Oscar took his place for the battle, he would let out his first pokemon. A massive haxorus emerged from the ball in his hand, roaring before stretching out his scaly body. Oscar nodded toward the arena, "Get in there Boris, fight's about to start." Boris nodded, stomping into the arena and puffing out his chest. Oscar peered to the opposite end, patiently waiting for the gym leader to appear. He was not sure what to expect, but nevertheless he found himself nervous. Hopefully they weren't as intimidating as their gym's appearance.

The burnt scarred man casually made his way down the long stone stairway the lead into the bottom of pit. Warm crimson colored orbs flickered to the open ceiling above, taking a mental note on the time of day. Once at the bottom, his gaze flickered to the referee on the side lines. At this point, the gym leader was getting use to the idea of a referee despite his distaste for it. Firm nods were exchanged between the two but nothing more. Maverick’s gaze shifted to the other side of the battlefield, examining both the beast that roared with life before the man on the other side. It didn’t surprise the gym leader that he has never met this man before. Hoenn was a well populated region. But judging strictly on his first creature of choice for their battle, he assumed at this man was well versed in the art of battling. Good.

“Hello Osman,” the man greeted politely in a flat tone, expression remained placid as he started to roll up his sleeves on his white button up, “Welcome to the Rustboro City Gym. The name is Maverick.” It was probably well known already who owned the gym by now but it was proper to introduce yourself. “Let’s have a fun battle. Shall we?” Once both of his long sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, the trainer reached into his ebony pant pocket to summon a creature. The urge to call out his own haxorus was hard to resist. And if he wasn’t in his own gym of dark type monsters, he would have. But lucky for Maverick, he knew what a haxorus was capable of.

The battle burst open to reveal the sword blade pokemon. She thrusted her left arm forward before swiping down, throwing her right arm out and upper butting to reveal her blades. Her face a scowl, eyes narrowed at dragon before her. A hint of a smile could be seen his Maverick’s eyes. “Katana has been itching for a fight,” he mumbled, the bisharp took on a fighting stance in her side of the battlefield, “Hope you don’t mind.” Whether he minded or not, it didn’t matter as the referee took a deep breath and made his statement.

“Today! Mister Samuel Osman challenges Gym Leader Maverick Ryder to a single battle with a limit of two pokemon. The rules are simple. Battle until both pokemon on one side can no longer fight. Challenger has first move whenever he is ready. Begin!”

The steel and dark type digits took on a light blue glow as she thrusted her arms to the side and hollered at the sky. Suddenly, multiple light blue swords appeared out of thing air around her. The swords curled around her for a moment, only to disappeared as quickly as they appeared. Katana returned back to her battle stance, guard up as she could almost feel it uplifting her fighting spirit and boosting her attack power. A slight tug on the edge of Mav’s lips slipped in a smirk, already seeing that this was going to be a good battle. Thrilling.

The gym leader finally made his appearance, and as Oscar observed him he couldn't help but begin to sweat. They were 100% as indimidating as the arena, in fact he might have been more so. This 'Maverick' was going to be a tough challenge, but if Oscar weren't ready to face it he wouldn't have shown up.

Oscar nodded to the gym leader's words, he couldn't guarantee having fun but internally promised a magnificent battle. As the leader's bisharp heightened its strength, Boris would huff loudly. He would not be intimidated by mere strength, what mattered was if his opponent had the skill to wield it. Boris looked to his master expectantly, and after considering his options Oscar would speak plainly.

"Go offensive, we don't have time to set up. Give them no room to breathe." Boris nodded, letting out a strange sound that could almost be chuckling. Turning toward his opponent, the mighty dragon would crack his thick neck before arching forward. There was a small pause, and then without warning Boris would make his move.

There was a burst of energy, and within the blink of an eye Boris would be upon the bisharp. His body was glowing red, and his charge was faster than his body should have been capable of. This mighty First Impression would be a devastating first blow if it were to hit, though it was mainly to display what Boris was capable of right off the bat. There were to be no doubts, this battle was not to be taken lightly.

Maverick had to admit. He was impressed.

As the swords dance took effect over his bisharp and she tried to ready herself for the fight, the haxorus was nimbler than either Katana or Maverick initially thought. Within a blink of an eye, the olive green dragon was right in front of her. His body took on a creepy red hue as it stuck her head on with a swift blow. Agony burned through her entire body from the blow, knocking her back a few feet as she tried to keep her balanced and not fall to the ground. She whined, right knee buckled to force her into a half kneeling position for a moment. She let out a rigid breath before standing up right, not willing to back down.

“Nice shot,” the man mumbled a complemented his opponent, taking metal notes as the battle started, “but costly. Metal burst.”

The bisharp gave the haxorus a dark glare as she focused. Her body quickly took on a metallic shimmer as she lifted her arms and brought her bladed hands together before her. A silver shimmer ball swiftly formed between her hands as she launched herself forward towards the dragon. Her aim was to smash the steel type ball into the haxorus anywhere she could before it had time to dodge or counter. It the attack hit, the damage would be 1.5 greater than the damage she just took from the first impression if it landed. Not to mention, the boost to her attack power from her swords stance either.

As Boris was pushed back by the impact of his strike, Oscar smirked. He folded his arms as he responded to Maverick's comment, "I'm glad we could leave a good--first impression." He chuckled to himself, far too tickled by his joke. Boris rolled his eyes, looking forward as his opponent made they're next move.

The Bisharp surged forward, far too fast to dodge out of the way. However, Boris was well trained and knew exactly how to Counter aggressive moves. He stood still, a blue aura enveloping him as the Bisharp closed in. His opponent's strike ran true, the impact rippling across Boris's scales. However, the dragon would look undeterred.

The ripple would travel up to his tusks, which would begin to glow as he swung them upon the Bisharp. Thanks to the power of Counter, Boris was able to redirect this physical strike back to his opponent. Should he succeed in retaliating, the bisharp shall quickly regret its immense strength.

As the bishop closed the gap between her and the dragon, a dragon suddenly became surrounded in a mysterious glow. She paid it no mind, thrusting her metal burst into the creature. But as soon as she made contact, her eyes widened as the blast reflected back. The burst send the steel and dark type flailing through the air and land on her back several feet back. She groaned, not from the blast but from the landing she took. Maverick frowned, rolling his eyes that she didn’t see the counter. “Get on your feet,” he barked, arms crossed over his chest, “Don’t let the dragon get the best of you.”

Katana got to her feet, blades hands rose into her fighting position. Maverick’s gaze flickered to the dragon, knowing how to battle it now. The only probably was, can his Bisharp handle it. “Katana, Blast it.” The steel and dark type moves her hands closer together. A light blue energy was quickly formed before her. And when it was ready, the creature thrusted the large ball forward at the dragon in hopes her aim was true.
