Gwyar was not a fan of tropical weather. The heat did not mesh well with a man born in a town named Freezington.

He waved at a fellow passing traveler with a friendly smile as he made his way through the route, beads of sweat rolling down his neck and into his top. The sun had reached its apex mere minutes ago, and its effects could be felt all around, from the sweat permeating his shirt to the way the scenery shimmered the further into the distance he gazed.

This would have been about the time he decided to tap out, never one to endure unnecessary punishment- but he needed to start filling out his pokeballs if he was going to take on the gym challenge.

Sure. That.

"Should've started at the beach." He said to himself with a chuckle as he placed his hands at his hips, craning back his head to sigh loudly before pushing on.

Despite having moved here months ago, Thea still found the tropical climate nigh unbearable. The winter months had come and yet the air was still hot and dry, nothing alike to the damp humidity and near-constant rain of her previous station in Hulbury and Hammerlocke. Nor was she truly accustomed to the wilderness and untamedness of Hoenn. She was a city girl, that much was clear.[break][break]

But it would not do if she went against her own instruction and didn't keep herself fit and in-tune with her body and her environment. [break][break]

And so.. hiking through route 114 in the heat proved beneficial to keep her blood pumping. Her Pokemon were nearby, a Drifblim floating high above as a sort of look-out, and three Dreepy chase after it, bobbing and weaving through the air.[break][break]

She comes to a halt, however, both to catch her breath and wipe damp hair from her brow, and to observe the man with his hands placed at his hips. He sighs and she blinks, eyebrows knitting together as she muses over what it is she's seeing. The man looks vaguely familiar, like a strangers face in a crowd that often reappeared. She couldn't place it, but she felt like she knew him.. somehow.[break][break]

"Excuse me, are you headed somewhere?"[break][break]

Her question falls awkwardly off her tongue, and she parts her lips in surprise at her own question. It wasn't any of her business. She could just as easily have moved on without speaking to him - he likely would never have known she'd been there.[break][break]

The man paused mid-step as a soft, awkward voice reached him. Peering over his shoulder just as another drop of sweat managed the perilous trail that was the bridge of his nose, the man found himself staring at a masked woman.

Who looked almost as uncomfortable and out of place in the searing tropical heat as he did.

"Naturally." He said as he half turned towards her, smiling teasingly. The man couldn't help it, given the question. "Few would endure this heat just for a stroll, no?"

His luck must have been turning up. It wasn't every day a beautiful woman approached you in the middle of nowhere. Maybe a useful pokemon would pop up next.

"Why?" He said, tilting his head. His teasing smile quirked. "Need company?"

A saying often used to describe the knights of olde was 'bold as brass.'

This was probably not what they had meant by it.

Thea blinks, taking a moment to subtly glance over his face and determine where it is she might know him from. It nags at her, a name forming on the tip of her tongue yet falling flat. A perfect stranger, but someone she'd seen before... in pictures.[break][break]

And he's smiling at her with a loose, ill-fitting grin. The man's eyes wander over her and it encourages her to hold her chin a little tighter, to tense and provide him no amusement for his advances. She's defensive without proper cause, other than the boldness he presents with the words he lets slip from his mouth.[break][break]

"Few who weren't born in Hoenn, perhaps. Those that are probably make this stroll often."[break][break]

His attention shifts to something more teasing, and Thea considers the man's boldness carefully. Her own volatile intrigue had already dashed whatever hopes she'd had of avoiding socializing to begin with, and here he was blatantly asking if she'd like to join him.[break][break]

"Do you prefer to stroll alone?"[break][break]

She was not from Hoenn, then.

She was not interested, either.

Good job, mate.

"Not in this heat." He said dryly, schooling his face into a neutral expression. "I welcome anyone who may distract from it. But..."

A moment of silence followed, emphasizing the sizzling heat bearing down upon them as another droplet of sweat falling off the tip of his nose.

It was quick to become awkward, making the knight eager to keep on his way. He liked feeling young, but being reminded of his teenage years was too young, thanks.

"... Apologies, I must have seemed as if I were lost." He finally said, only coming to this much more reasonable conclusion after blowing the first impression. On reflex, he found himself falling back onto much more reliable courtesy. "Thank you for your concern. I'll be on my way now- Safe travels."

He folded an arm over his chest and bowed politely, a knight's gesture, before turning his gaze back to the road ahead. For once he was glad for the fiery sun.

He could blame his red face on it. If his partner had seen this she would have been laughing her bottom off by now.

The man's expression flattens, deadpans, neutralizes into something she immediately recognizes as an error on her part. She had never been one for idle socializing-- small talk, they called it. Nor had she ever given way to acts of boldness. Her flat response had clearly struck a chord, and it needed tuning.[break][break]

Warmth paints her cheeks rosier than the exertion already colouring them as she opens her mouth to respond. It hadn't been her intention to discourage him, mostly.[break][break]

He apologizes and she stands there, flabbergasted and at a loss for how to rectify the situation. She was an expert in strategic Pokemon battles and deciphering the easy-to-read expressions of children, not grown men.[break][break]

When he bows and moves to leave, Thea audibly gasps, which surprises her even further given her aptitude for keeping her expressions under control. His stiff mannerisms, the neat, knightly bow. It was all incredibly Galarian that it surprised her.[break][break]

"Wha-- you're Sir Gwyar Wledig."[break][break]

She clears her throat at her outburst, her face suddenly hot. She remembered where she'd seen his face, now. He had been the talk of the town, so to speak, amongst the women she had worked with. He was a famous trainer that the academy had looked up to as a hero or idol, the epitome of what a trainer should be.[break][break]

And here she was making a fool of herself in front of him.[break][break]

"My apologies, Sir, for being so unbelievably rude."[break][break]

His exit was stopped short by her gasping out his name. He hadn't expected that.

"... Galarian?" He asked after a moment of silence.

She wasn't from hoenn, and he wasn't particularly famous outside of Galar- seemed like an educated guess.

"Ah, no." He said, interrupting her mid apology, holding up a single hand in deterrence. "I was impudent. You've no reason to apologize."

The awkward air hadn't quite left them, and he was definitely at fault. He hadn't been recognized often during his stay in Hoenn- and he had actually liked that. It was much easier to go about his day as just a nameless pretty face.

"... Still. What a rare treat." He said after a moment, turning back towards her. "It's rare to meet another Galarian so far away from home."

His past deeds had come in to salvage the wreck he had made out of this first meeting- might as well leave things on a positive note before parting ways.

"Pardon me the audacity, but may I have your name?" He said, tilting his head slightly. He chuckled. "Since you have mine and all."

Why had she wanted him to, though? There is a feeling in her belly that she's not quite familiar with. It seems to grow stronger and warm her face further when he stops and turns to look at her. [break][break]

'Am I in awe? Is that what this is?'[break][break]

She clears her throat awkwardly when he responds, interrupting her mid-apology. But she doesn't argue, merely waits for him to continue. Their mutual discomfort is plain as day, but Thea chooses to be the one to approach him, instead.[break][break]

"I lived in Galar for a time - but I wasn't born there. Though I'm flattered to be viewed as such, regardless."[break][break]

He asks her name and she straightens her shoulders slightly, floored that she hadn't had the decency to introduce herself. This was incredibly unlike her, and she exhales in quiet surprise.[break][break]

"Alethea Ivanov-- you can call me Thea, if you want."[break][break]

Half right, then! Not too bad. She didn't seem as on guard now as she had been before. Had he jumped the gun earlier, trying to run away?

"I see. It's a pleasure to make acquaintance, Ms. Ivanov." He said.

Her offer was appreciated, but he would stick to courtesy for now. Seemed to work much better than brashness.

That or his reputation was pulling weight for him. An unpleasant but plausible thought.

His gaze shifted away from the woman to just over her shoulder, some silhouettes he recognized as not human moving about in the background-

But they weren't as interesting as the lady before him, so his attention was quick to come back to her.

... He wasn't sure what to speak about. It was usually simple to converse while on the road, but their bumpy introduction had seemingly left them in an eternally awkward standoff.

He cleared his throat.

"S- so, you've heard of me, I take it?" He said, and almost immediately wished he had bitten his tongue. Who the heck wanted to hear to someone else yap about themselves? "You must have been very young when in Galar, then! I doubt I'm a hot topic these days."

As he said this, he laughed, scratching at his cheek.

"It feels weird to be able to say it so casually." He said, admitting while smiling sheepishly. "It used to be such a sore spot for me. I can't even remember when I stopped caring."

He could laugh about it now, but it remained proof that he hadn't managed to attain the champion title in his youth.

The Eternal, invincible Champion of Galar had refused to so much as budge from his throne, both then and now.

His kind words bring a smile to her face, and she dips her head in response, a small smile placed on delicate lips.[break][break]

"Indeed."[break][break]

He chooses to use her last name, and, for a moment hearing it spoken aloud brings a pang to her chest. Her students didn't always know how to pronounce her name in its entirety, and to hear it spoken so easily from his lips-- it stings.[break][break]

Thea's attention strays from his face to fall to her feet, though the noise over her shoulder and the addition of Gwyar's attention behind her brings her eyes up and over. Nothing remains, however, and whatever moment of surprise passes her by. [break][break]

"I have. You were quite the sought-after young man all those years ago."[break][break]

But her expression displays her surprise cleanly when he comments on her youth.[break][break]

"Well-- not so young, I suppose."[break][break]

She clears her own throat, eyebrows knitting together at her half-hearted attempt to defend herself. And for what? Why did it matter? It didn't she supposed.[break][break]

"You may not have made Champion, but you inspired many young, strapping trainers to rise to the challenge. You're still a hero to the up and coming, you know."[break][break]

In the background, so as to not interrupt their conversation, an unsuspecting Sableye is taken down by what looks to be a simple pokedoll. The Mimikyu takes advantage of its innocence and the wild Pokemon's curiosity, smothering the Pokemon with an aggressive play rough. It doesn't stand a chance, and the Pokemon would be brought to Alethea eventually for capture.[break][break]

The blonde stared at her in surprise, before letting out a strong laughing, his arms falling back to his hips.

"Sought-after? Are you sure? It certainly didn't feel that way!" He said, still chuckling as he brought one hand to his mouth, shoulders quaking. "Most men and women I met just tried to beat my pokemon into the ground!"

Of course, that was mostly his fault.

In a quick interview between matches were he hadn't been so much paying attention as he had been trying to plan his line up for the next opponent, without realizing it he had absentmindedly said...
