First appearances are an influential part of today’s society. They are dictators of beginnings. A friendship? An enemy? Start with a well-received joke. A firm handshake. A laugh or a smile. It’ll decide the future. Many thrive for good first impressions. They want to like and be liked. Adored. Looked up to. Many are this way.[break][break]
But not all.[break][break]
Jackson is the embodiment of terrible first impression. He’s sharp-tongued, dismissive, irritable, and short-tempered. Although an individual may find pieces of good pierced deep into his heart, the surface image shows the word a dryly sarcastic and short-tempered man. His actions are often irregardless of those around him, snapping and cursing no matter who he’s in the presence of. Few are allowed into his personal space, both physical and mental, and even fewer are shown the protective and caring side of an older brother who’s lost his family. The world has tainted his mind, broken his heart, and built a thick wall of protection around his thoughts. He’s secretive, storing his secrets in a box locked tight with a key lost years ago. Jackson trusts no one, and others would be well to do the same to him.[break][break]
In an alternate world, with a family that loved him and a brother the was still alive, Jackson is curious, friendly, and well-liked. He’s handsome and popular, with girls constantly throwing themselves at him. In the real world, Jackson is none of these things. As a result of his tragic upbringing, Jackson has the tendency to expect the worst of everyone. While he was younger, he was constantly looking for a reason to keep hating his mother and, as he grew older, he’s begun seeking out reasons for why he shouldn’t trust other people. He’ll jump to false conclusion quickly, with all forms of kindness or assistance assumed to be hiding an alternative motive. He harbors contempt for people who still manage to smile despite all the evil in the world, misplacing the hatred for himself onto others. Desperately, somewhere deep inside, Jackson craves to be someone that his younger brother could have looked up to. However, all he can do is blame himself and lash out at everyone else.[break][break]
Without control, Jackson feels as though he has nothing. He hates not being able to control his life. He hates not being able to control his brother. Or his mother. Or his ‘destiny’. Without his own control, everything seems to spiral out of control, thrashing in a sea of death and darkness. He lost his brother because he couldn’t control him and he ended up bruised and broken because he couldn’t control the leaders choosing his destiny. Although Jackson is described as angry, one must remember that it is a secondary emotion. It’s the emotion that protects him and covers up his vulnerable feelings. When he feels trapped, like a tiger forced on display, his mind spins him to anger as he grasps to regain control and protect himself.[break][break]
Most people will have the misfortune of seeing the short-tempered and sharp-tongued side of Jackson. However, he is not all bad. For children, so innocent, and for others who cannot protect themselves he is much more. They are the ‘few’ allowed into his personal space and the ‘even fewer’ to receive the protective and caring side of an older brother. Jackson has been through abuse that no child should ever have to suffer. Abused and beaten and tortured as a child, he has had innocence ripped away from him by a neglectful mother and an abusive mother. Within him, he has the desire to protect children from the same fate. While he's awkward and often misspoken, he would lie down his life to protect someone who cannot do the same for themselves.[break][break]
history
[break][break]
Since the moment of his birth, Jackson Barrett has been dogged with misfortune. Rarely a moment has gone by where he hadn't wished to replace the circumstances of his birth, or reverse it altogether. Recklessness comes from a lack of the fear of death, which is something he'd often wished for before anger reigned more fiercely. While the lucky ones are often said to have come out of the womb with a silver spoon in their mouth, Jackson came out with the broken end of a short stick.[break][break]
A local of Hoenn, Jackson was born to two active members of a massive organization that most will know as Team Rocket. They stole Pokemon and created chaos in every waking moment (and many of the night). To Jackson, who grew up in the organization, it all seemed normal, at first. His mother, 18 year old Elizabeth Barrett, was desperate for attention. She, too, was born with the short end of a stick and sought out acceptance from anywhere she could find it. Elizabeth was a runaway teen; a drug addict obsessed with the fantasy of success - riches and fame. Jackson's father was 36: Julian Padilla. He was a power-hungry executive who had Elizabeth convinced that sexual relations with him would grant her greater power in the organization and access to more drugs. Unsurprisingly, he blackmailed her, instead. As soon as Elizabeth wanted out of the sexual arrangements, he threatened to reveal her intentions within the organization. Or kill her.[break][break]
Not long afterwards, Elizabeth Barrett was pregnant. Nine months later, after a failed abortion, she gave birth to a baby boy: Jackson Barrett. Elizabeth never told him who his father was. And Jackson never assumed that a family was made up of more than a single mother.[break][break]
Given the fact that Elizabeth was immature with zero interest in motherhood, everything went relatively smoothly for her and her son during the first six year of his life. Jackson was talkative, energetic, and naturally curious about life and how the world had worked. He was always asking questions and exploring the world on his own, more due to the fact that his mother would often leave him home alone while she pursued missions with other members of Team Rocket. This is how he met Yamper. His only friend then and likely his only true friend today.[break][break]
In an alternative universe, Jackson might have grown up to be an engineer. Or a scientist. However, as time passed, all the good things must come to an end. This spark of changed occurred several months after he turned six. During another solitary exploration, Jackson happened upon a raging argument between his mother and Julian. Elizabeth was screaming vulgarities at Julian, who held her firmly by both wrists. Their heat-filled conversation played through numerous new discoveries of Jackson. The old man he always tried to avoid was his father. His mother didn't want him. His mother actually hated him.[break][break]
And - his mother was pregnant.[break][break]
That was the last thing Jackson learned from the conversation before his mother noticed his presence. It was also the last thing Jackson learned before he experienced the first punch of many from his father.[break][break]
Nine months passed. Nine months filled with fear and loneliness and mistreatment. Nine months running from a father who had previously ignored his presence, but who now sought him out as a release of anger and aggressive power. His own emotions, which were once filled with fascination of the world and its making, began to mirror his father's as he built a barrier to protect his young heart. At such a young age, Jackson was now abruptly aware that nobody would protect him.[break][break]
As such, when his younger brother was born, Jackson latched on quickly to the innocent child. If no one would protect him, Jackson would. Except, Adam was different. Adam latched onto their mother, at first. But age and independence eventually separated them the way it had happened for Jackson. So, it was no surprise that Adam and Jackson eventually grew fiercely attached to each other. They went everywhere together and Jackson protected his younger brother with his life. He crafted stories and fantasies of a better life for both of them, offering time and time again that he would eventually take them to a better place.[break][break]
But Adam fell into the trap of the organization. When Julian suddenly disappeared and his mother tried to step back into their lives, Adam welcomed it with open arms. He was still young, of course. Jackson was not. The anger and aggression he'd developed over the years had removed all traces of the love he once felt for his mother. Julian's abrupt departure made things better for Elizabeth Barrett, whom was finally making her way up through the ranks.[break][break]
Once he turned 17, Jackson was coerced into joining the official ranks of the organization. It was his mother's hope that a position within their ranks would curb his anger management problems and give them something to have in common. Instead, Jackson used it as an outlet for his anger. He would constantly get into fights with the others and, as a result, found himself in trouble more times than not. His mother's position was all that saved him from being kicked out, or worse. His younger brother's loyalty was also a contributing factor.[break][break]
For years, Jackson remained in this situation. Gradually, he learned self-control to tame his anger, but his snark comments expressed all the rage still swirling through his mind. For years, Jackson would have continued in this situation if it wasn't for the sudden collapse of Team Rocket and the victory of the legion in the war they fought. His mother was killed fighting for her beliefs and many high-rankers of the organization dropped off the grid. Jackson was one of the lucky few who escaped, despite being in the midst of the chaos. His brother, on the other hand, was one of many who went missing.[break][break]
New anger raged inside Jackson. His entire life, as much as he hated it, was destroyed. His mother was dead. His brother was missing. All he had left was Miro, the Yamper of his childhood who had since evolved into a Boltund. For a time, he had no destination. Maybe he would go to school. Or maybe become a police officer and fight against what he'd experience as a child. However, the call of Team Rocket was stronger than one he could control. When he heard of the organization working underground from an old acquaintance who had stayed within the ranks, Jackson found himself being drawn back. While the leaders of Team Rocket have changed, as have their rules, Jackson still holds resentment for those who choose to affiliate themselves with the group. It is, after all, his only hope to possibly find and reunite with his lost younger brother. [break][break]
