he walks along the lilycove shore-line, starting his patrols by the boardwalk. it isn't easy masquerading as a member of lilycove police, but since he's been doing it for so long, it is for him. plus, he's not that much of a talker as it is, so it isn't that difficult. people tend to stay away from him in general, either because of his intimidating, bulky frame or the glowering glare that seems to always be a part of his expression these days. there was once upon a time when his face was bright and full of hope, a charming grin guaranteed to be on his face. but that was when he was a teenager, that was in the before. before noah, before thea, before everyone.

flynn glances at the shortline, one hand on his holster, as he stares out at the lilycove shoreline, for any potential danger. a sharpedo swims far out into the ocean, barely visible, doing hops and somersaults into the air every several minutes. at his heel is his mightyena, sitting down, her face just as somber and concentrated.

[break][break] like flynn, she - too - was at work.

"Miss Ivanova! It was so nice to see you again, thank you so much for coming!"[break][break]

Thea stands just outside of a cozy restaurant, still clutching her barely-touched cup of coffee. She didn't drink coffee, but the woman in front of her had bought it before she could object, given she'd been waiting for the woman to arrive for a pre-arranged visit.[break][break]

"Of course, Sarah, I love to hear from my students. It's good to hear you're doing well and still challenging the League circuit."[break][break]

But the woman's smile is strained, and she returns Sarah's hug with stiffness, holding the hand clutching her coffee cup away from the woman's dark hair.[break][break]

When they break apart, however, the girl becomes distracted by a commotion nearby. Apparently there is a conflict ongoing not far away, with raised voices and fists raised in self defense and aggression. A punch is thrown, blood is drawn, and Sarah screams loud enough to shatter glass. Thea winces, bewildered, just as Sarah begins to insist they call the police.[break][break]

"N-no, hold on, Sarah, wait-- you don't want to get involved in something like this, you could get--"[break][break]

Her voice trails off.[break][break]

"... hurt."[break][break]

But the woman is already fleeing, hunting down the one police officer on the street. Little did Thea know, it was a ghost she'd tucked away in her closet, come back to haunt her. She feels herself take in a quick breath, as if the world slows down along with it. [break][break]

"sir, sir! help, come quick!"

[break][break] as it turns out, flynn doesn't have to wait long. lilycove in general is a quiet city, but as of late, there has been more commotions to attend to. since the war, it seems civilians have come up with any excuse to get in trouble - which, unfortunately, becomes flynn's problem as well.

[break][break] blue's ears are on high alert and she turns just as the girl comes running up, breath heaving.

[break][break] "what is it?" flynn says without preamble, cutting to the chase. his face is gruff and unfriendly, but it doesn't seem to bother the young girl. she has other things on her mind.

[break][break] "there's a fight, you have to help, mister! quick, just come!" it doesn't take much convincing on flynn's part - it's his job after all. quickly, the two of the mare led to the scene of the crime, where a crowd is beginning to gather. it's two young men - they couldn't have been older than high school. one of them straddles the other, burrowing him into quick-fire punches.

[break][break] it isn't a matter that requires a gun, flynn is quick to assess. blue either. with a few quick strides, flynn reaches forward and forcibly pulls one civilian off of the other, and then shoved him in the shoulder. "walk it off," he demands. the boy looks shocked, then indignant, and flynn glowers. the boy thinks better of it, and scurries off, his friends behind him.

[break][break] with that out of the way, flynn turns to the injured. he offers his hand out, and pulls the other teen up with one swoop. there is still a crowd, watching, and so flynn decides to make use of them. "anyone have a medical pokemon? or a cell phone? someone call some medics." flynn's voice is demanding and firm — he hasn't yet seen Alethea Ivanova among the crowd.

The man and the Mightyena both send an uncomfortable shiver down her spine. It's the way they run in tandem, following after the young girl. The cool, calm demeanor in the face of a supposed emergency. It leaves Thea positively stunned into silence as she watches the man break up the situation with ease.[break][break]

'Walk it off.'[break][break]

Had she heard him say that before? It sounded so.. familiar.[break][break]

Cold lavender eyes linger on the back of the officers head a moment longer, just long enough for her to be stunned into disbelief, maybe even horror. The colour in her cheeks fades away as Flynn turns to bark orders at the crowd, seeking out assistance for the man still on the ground, groaning and bleeding.[break][break]

Sarah returns to her side, gushing over a. how hot the officer is and b. how pale and frightened Thea appears to be. The woman's hands are all over Thea's face, concern written in the crease between her brows. But she pulls her hands away and instead strokes the students cheek.[break][break]

"No, no I'm fine, Sarah. Come on, you should get back home."[break][break]

Unfortunately, Sarah is definitely not interested in doing that, and is actually the reason the officer finds a Pokemon capable of helping. Sarah's Chansey appears from her belt, and the young woman wastes no time getting back into Flynn's personal space, peppering him with questions and flirtations (as subtle as she can manage). The Chansey gets to work stabilizing his cuts and bruises, stopping the bleeding.[break][break]

As far as he was concerned, Flynn was at work -- and when he was at work, he was focused on little else besides it. It was for this reason that the Lilycove Policeman spoke out to the crowd, paying no attention to who might have been in it's midst. The rest of the crowd seems to only stare at him in stunned silence, as if they are almost as useless as the two boys that were beating each other up. Fucking mob mentality. Flynn's lip curled in distaste, annyoed, and about to pull out his own phone when finally a woman spoke out from the crowd.

[break][break] It's the same woman from earlier, and this time she has a Chansey. Her pokemon does quick work of healing the injured civilian, who looks sheepish and awkward to have to be the center of such attention. Flynn, for the moment, is distracted and still does not take notice of Alethea Ivanova , his eyes narrowed with concentration to make sure that the boy is in good shape. He asks the boy questions about his name and where he's from, all the while either ignoring or avading Sarah's questions or flirtations. When she places her hand adoringly on his bicep, getting up all in his personal space, he looks away and continues talking to the boy. The only clue that he has even noticed is the slight flush on his features — a mark of the old Kristopoher, who is somewhere still inside. Once he gets the boy's name and number, he sends him off too, and it's only then that Flynn looks around. Where had Blue gone?

[break][break] Unlike Flynn, who still remained ignorant to the existence of Alethea Ivanova , Blue is not. As soon as the civilians were taken care of, her nose takes to the air and her expression brightens as she smells and notices Flynn's old friend. As a dog, she has absolutely no idea of the animsity between them — or so it appears. The canine sprints towards the crowd, making a few members jump away with unease and wags her tail excitedly as she presses her cold nose against Thea. She is not so uncouth that she jumps — though she certainly wants to — but she certainly does give a friendly bark in her direction.

[break][break] It is her bark that makes Flynn's head snap up, and his gaze suddenly fixate on the all-to-familiar blond woman who his wolf is accosting. Teal eyes snap instantly to blue, and the still-breathtaking woman it belongs to.

[break][break] Flynn nearly loses his own breath.

[break][break] "...Thea?"

It is as if time stands still, and the is the only one capable of moving each individual piece. But instead of doing that, instead of turning to leave, pretending he didn't exist, she finds that she, too, is frozen. Her feet are locked in place, her breath catches in her throat, and she can't tear her eyes away.[break][break]

"I--"[break][break]

He says her name, and Blue is at her side, panting. The dog's hot breath tickles her fingers, and she reaches to stroke her fur, as if this is familiar, as if she's done this before. And she had, numerous times, long before Blue had evolved into the beautiful Mightyena she was now. [break][break]

But panic surges in her chest, and Sara seems horrified and disgusted all at the same time that this super hot police officer she's literally hanging off of is slack-jawed and wide-eyed for her former teacher. [break][break]

"Yeuch.. didn't see that one coming."[break][break]

Dejected, Sara returns her Chansey and waves awkwardly at Thea before making her exit. Thea waves back, though there is no life to the way her arm rises and falls to bid her former student farewell.[break][break]

But her attention never strays from Flynn's face. There is a sadness there, a sense of confusion, maybe even fear. Somehow, however, she finds her courage and her words. Her hand withdraws from Blue's head slowly, as if she feels as if she isn't allowed that courtesy, that friendship. [break][break]

Because she doesn't.[break][break]

"Hey, Kris. You... look well."[break][break]

It was like the whole world dropped away, and he could see no one but her. The sounds of the beach and boardwalk, the chattering woman next to him, the whispers on the surrounding crowd when they see the way that Flynn's face falls apart at the sight of her. His face, while formerly pinched together with barely held together annoyance, goes through a million different emotions. Disbelief, shock, relief, anger. It is like someone has thrown a window into the glass that is his heart, shattered it into a dozen pieces, and then someone placed the rewind button.

[break][break] His face falls apart and puts itself back together in a matter of seconds.

[break][break] If someone hadn't known him, hadn't known what to look for, they may not have noticed at all.

[break][break] Blue notices. Confused, the Mighyena turns to look at her trainer, only absently feeling the fingers tangled in her fur that feel so, so familiar and yet so far away all at once. Her tail - once wagging - slows to a stop. She glances between both Thea and Flynn, like a child between it's parents, confused, afraid.

[break][break] "Hey, Kris. You... look well."

[break][break] It's like her voice draws him back to the present. Anger, barely contained, flashes in his stormy green gaze, like a crackle of lightning. His voice is clipped. "Blue. Heel." With a voice that broke no room for an argument.

[break][break] He turns on his heel then, heading back towards the shore of the beach, not wanting to - no, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a response. Blue pads towards him, then stops, head jerked towards Alethea Ivanova with wide eyes.

[break][break] Was she going to do something? Or was she just going to let Flynn go, a second time?

She can pick apart each and every detail in the way his face falls apart. The disbelief, the shock, the relief, the anger. It flashes like bolts of lightning against the surface of his face, and she can feel the pain that it brings him, just looking at her. It gets worse when she opens her mouth to speak, because all of that washes away in an instant.[break][break]

He calls Blue away from her, and though her eyes don't stray from Flynn's face, it's impossible to miss the whine, she uncertainty, the way she hesitates between them like a child caught in the crossfire. Thea sucks in a breath when he turns around, pulling away without saying anything at all. There is a burning in the pit of her stomach when she sees only the back of his head.[break][break]

Thea stands there, unmoving, just watching the man she once loved pull away. It felt wrong, if only because it had been her to do that originally. It had been her who had turned away and walked off. [break][break]

But it was Blue who pulls her out of that downward spiral, that inability to speak up, to object. The Mightyena's wide eyes and hesitation encourage her to take a step forward.[break][break]

"I'm sorry."[break][break]

Half the crowd has already dissipated once Sarah has left, once the trivial dispute between the two boys was discarded. However, a few more follow suit, returning to the privacy of the cafe once they see the confrontation between the two strangers is about to occur. There is a few who linger, namely two young children who are suddenly interested in this drama, like watching the reel of a sitcom reality show. Most, however, realize that whatever exists between these two people are meant to be private, not for prying eyes to see.

[break][break] "I'm sorry."

[break][break] The words make him stop, stilling him. Fists clench at his side as the emotions rage with him, torn between anger and disblief. She was sorry? That was all she had to say, nearly a decade - maybe less - of them being apart? That was what she had to say after she'd destroyed him? Them?

[break][break] His face is pure unadulterated rage as he turns back towards Alethea Ivanova , stormy eyes flashing like lightning. "Sorry?" he says, repeats, like a mockery. An ugly laugh. "For what? Do you even know what you're apologizing for, Alethea?"

The bystanders who remain are background noise, fading out of existence. It is just her and him, two people lost, angry, confused.. afraid.[break][break]

And time stops a second time when Flynn stops. But this time the cold between them is devastating, unbearable, terrifying.[break][break]

She can't breathe, she can't think. She can't even react, not when he spits her words back at her with such frigility. He is angry, beyond angry. He is furious.[break][break]

And she is powerless to stop him, to defend herself. Perhaps she doesn't want to. The vileness in his laugh is jarring, and it feels as though she is looking at a stranger. But wasn't that what they were now? Strangers? Hadn't that been exactly what she'd wanted for them?[break][break]
