Of course he knew how to read braille. Fucking rich people. How did they even have time for all the things that they did? Between learning new languages, playing on a classic instrument or two, and all the social gatherings she assumed that Fernando had to take part of as a child - Katherine could only assume that he had little time left for himself.

Maybe that explains why he is the way that he is.

“Of course you did.”

She scoffs before rolling her eyes, somehow both impressed and annoyed with what he said. Around Fernando, these feelings tend to blend with each other.

And while it certainly seems like he has a chance to respond, he doesn’t. Not really. Her attention, and presumably, his as well, are stolen by the panicked priestess that runs to disrupt their peace.

Katherine is trained enough to figure out what the woman was attempting to say. Fire.

Where, why, what? It matters little. In cases like this, responding fast seemed to be of the top priority.

“And I thought that it’s only Hoenn that has such bad luck,” She exchanges a couple of hushed words with her date for the tour before retrieving a Pokeball. She is as prepared as you’d expect from a seasoned gym-leader and an experienced criminal. Leaving her house without a full team of pokemon was out of the question.

Always.

Drifblim announces its arrival with a resounding 'whoosh', twirling in place before swooping into action. Katherine, naturally, breaks into a sprint to follow after it. Fernando is left to choose whether if he’s interested in aiding her or simply evacuating people.

The water ensures that the fire is unable to spread, but some points clearly need a rougher treatment. Liquid alone seems to only do so much. And as great as the pour may have been, delicate flames needed delicate treatment. And it comes in the form of a continuous, rapid ICY WIND that both drops the temperature and spreads ice in a cone - spraying the fire with bits of ice and snow.

It’s far from enough to quell the fire itself, but it’s enough to slow it down even further, forcing it to melt the snowy parts of the attack, and allowing the RAIN to finish the job.

Unfortunately, the source of the fire has yet to be found, and Katherine’s author is incapable of thinking of it, leaving Fernando to figure it out himself.

The smoke spreads within the building, forcing Kat to cover her mouth and nostrils with the sleeve of her sweater.

“Fernando. Do we head inside?” It could be their only shot at saving the building— but is taking such a risk even worth it?

Katherine is undoubtedly more reluctant to sprint into the raging inferno. There is no legendary trailing behind her, no mythical creature that dares to follow her steps and put themselves at risk along with her. She’s alone. She’s always been alone, and it wasn’t going to change overnight.

She has lived her life conforming herself to such a fact.

And yet, there’s a certain sense of security that shrouds her when she watches Fernando act and run into action.

Her mind is telling her not to trust him, but her body acts on different feelings and thoughts she dares not confront.

The inner turmoil is put to rest when Katherine faces the fire and demands from her ghostly partner to lend Tapu Fini its help. The pokemon continues to breathe an ICY WIND, following the pattern of the deity.

But Katherine, unfortunately, is not as immune to the smoke or trained to deal with it. There isn’t a mist that clings to her being and protects her, and her shortness of breath becomes evident when she starts to cough violently, gasping for air.

When she falls to the ground, only one thing is on her mind: it was a mistake.

She’s unable to resist being carried by him in her current state, but if she could? It would’ve happened by now.

Even when her lips part and words almost crawl out of her throat, her lungs demand otherwise and she coughs again, forcing her to use her hand to cover her mouth. Her ghost follows after Fernando and his pair of legendaries, unable to voice concern for its trainer but staying near enough to show it with their presence.

Despite how Katherine may feel, all she wants to do is proclaim that she’s fine and that Fernando needs to let go of her, but her body deems her needs more important than her wants.

Fortunately, she retains her consciousness thanks to the efforts of the Shaymin at filtering the air. She breathes, little by little, air that hasn't been contaminated and polluted by smoke and ash.

Regardless of the fact that normally, Katherine would’ve responded with a snarky remark, no words part from her lips. She’s carried by Fernando until he deems it fit to set her down some place, likely to receive some treatment she’d end up despising. The worst part of it all isn’t that their vacation wasn’t ruined— it was that she let herself ruin it for the sake of other people.

Pathetic.
