The power of a sense, that you know another gym leader that entered your gym meant a lot. It was always intense because it became who was the better gym leader. “ooh Maverick is coming?” he asked himself as he got word of the interaction. Luckily he had met the man before, and he was friendly, if anything a little standoffish? At least that was the vibe he got, but friendly nonetheless.[break][break]

“Oh hi!” he waved as the man finally entered the stadium sized gym, that was...you know far too large for its own damn good. “So you wanna battle right?” Billi’s cheeks puffed up, as he stood in his leggings, and loose tank theme after his rotom. “You can choose any of my three pokemon with the same maturity as the three you’re using!”

So… this is what it was like for a gym leader to challenge another gym leader. Well… what it was like being the one to challenge another gym anyway.

He had to admit, it didn’t bother him as much as he thought it would. In Maverick’s eyes, he was just another trainer wanting to earn a badge of another. He supposed, it would look bad on his part of he lost another gym leaders battle. But in reality, it would have no effect on his gym or how his gyms stands. It would just destroy his reputation as a ‘advanced skilled’ trainer. And ultimately, hurt his own ego more than anything. The man let out a stiff light chuckled to himself, finding it funny at the thought that technically this was his first ever gym challenge in Hoenn despite being a gym leader himself.

The scarred man entered the massive stadium without much thought, expression placid as his gaze flickered over the arena. As per usually, Azula trotted royaltyy by his side. The place was rather huge, wondering what kind of battles Billi expected to have here to have such a emissive place. At the mention of his name, warm orbs fixed on a familiar face offering a small smile and a quick wave. “Hey there Billi,” he greeted, taking to his spot on the battlefield opposed of him, “Yeah. I would like to battle if that’s alright with you.” The man rose a bow, his request for him to pick pokemon throw him off guard and insulted him deep down. Of course, he knew billi meant no harm and rolled it off.

“Nahhh,” he shook his head back and forth, letting out a stiff single chuckle while keeping his expression flat, “I’m not interested in picking your pokemon. You pick your pokemon. I want to see how a bug specialist handles his creatures.” He met his gaze again with determination, a hint of a smirk tugged at the edges of his lips. “And if you don’t mind, maybe you can tell me at the end of the battle whether I win or lose how my bugs are.”

Reaching into his pockets, the man plucked out three poke balls and held them up. Each of them between a finger. “Three pokemon right?” He wiggled his fingers, forcing the balls to move with them in a wave. “Single battle?” He closed his hand, moving them so he picked one ball at random. Truthfully, the man didn’t really care if he won or lose. Yes, winning would be nice but he wanted to test his creatures and see how they fair with a man who specialized in said type.

With a simply press of a bottom, the ball burst opened to reveal his first creature. The centipede like creature lifted her head off the ground, tiny legs and the mandible wiggled. Bitty eyes flickered over the area before fixing on Billi. His flaming antennae and telson grew in intensity when the creature let out a huff, returning to their natural size after. Maverick let out another stiff crackle. “This is Aithne. Believe it or not, this will be her first battle with me.” Normally, the scarred male didn’t do such things. He would never risk sending out a pokemon in an important battle without working with it first. But today, was different. “Risky... I know. You need to take risk every now and again, right?” Whether he gave his opinion or not, the man gave billi a firm nod. “We are ready when you are. Who gets first move?”

Maverick was the right gym leader to join in and battle, and it was a little intimidating! Many people have walked through these walls and didn’t concern Billi if they won or not. Now this battle was always something that would be whispered about, and people would label him as the pushover gym leader, which let’s face it he was! But he brought heart and soul to pokemon! A genuine connection and that was how he choose to live his life.[break][break]

“Oh okay! If that’s what you wanna do!” he raised his brow checking out his giant centiskorch. Just admiring it with his eyes, and gave a wide smile, “He’s a big boy!” the gender really didn’t matter and it took his professional side of his brain from preventing him from scratching it’s underbelly and giving it honey for a snack., “If you want that...then I can….”[break][break]

Turning around he allowed his eyes to find one of his pokemon. Looking up, he found him, floating around basking in the sunlight. “hEy come down here,” he waved as the Volcarona flew it’s way down, it’s wings shimmering with heatwaves as it came to the battle field. “So I’ll use a Volcarona! Seems fair. Fire vs Fire,” he nodded stepping back.[break][break]

“Any huge destructive moves aren’t allowed in doors okay?” he mentioned as he turned, “I hope you have fun in this battle,” he winked and stepped back as the buzzer went off. “Volcarona.” he paused, ”Whirlwind,” it spun the wind around itself keeping the wind currents moving swiftly to deter close combat.

Billi admired his centiskorch much like when Maverick admired dark creatures that he was forced to battle against. Although unseen, this put a smile on his face. Not because the bug trainer liked his bug, but more that a man who was a fellow specialist in his own typing knew when he saw a good one and wasn’t afraid to admit to it. He liked that about Billi and already earned a ‘brownie point’ so to speak with Maverick. He has started to earned Maverick’s real respect.

To no surprise, Billi summoned a bug creature of his own from amongst the ones scattered throughout his gym. Warm crimson colored orbs observed the Volcarona as his master beckoned it to come down to battle for him. The fire and bug type seemed well taken care of as he greeted his master and his master was ready to fight. Maverick was very interested in seeing how a volcarona from a true bug master should be. After all, Mav had one too. And just by looks, it seemed much stronger than his. Maverick gave the man a small nod in return, accepting the chosen creature he had picked.

As the petalburg gym leader took to his side of the field, he made a comment that no destructive moves were allowed in this gym. This puzzled him for a moment, wondering what moves were considered ‘destructive’ to him. He hoped he didn’t have any of those. Maverick didn’t think so. It would be funny though if he would be declared loser at fault for accidentally using a ‘destructive’ move. But, Maverick had little to no time to think about it. Before he knew it, the buzzer rang and Billi called out the first move.

A sudden boost of wind whirled around the area in the matter of seconds, forcing the man to shield his eyes from any dirt or debris that was stirred up from the gust. Luckily, the sudden increase of wind didn’t seem to bother his fiery centipede. But this did help his flying bug, boosting its speed if anything. This was going to be an interesting battle. Let’s test the speed boost to see how much faster the pokemon is.

“Venoshock!”

The flaming bug lifted her head up into the air, shifting her body so it was more aerodynamic in the wind. She let the toxic substance filled her mouth only for a moment. When ready, she spited out multiple purple poison darts from her mouth at the opponent. Her aim was to hit the creature, already some of them veered off course due to the wind. If any of them did make it to her opponent, the poisonous globs would explode into a poisonous cloud on impact. For Maverick, this was merely a test.

The battle had begun with Billi making the first move, the wind redirecting the venoshock away from the bug, though it’s eyes stared. “Hurricane,” Billi grinned, as the wind wouldn’t do much damage inside the building because it was built to withstand it. The volcarona dodged the other stray shots before it’s wings began to beat with the power of a hundred jets and whipped up the hurricane speeds.
