Another week on the fiery path meant another fiery teammate to add to their collective heat.

There weren't many more fire-types he was burning to get his hands on but rather than go elsewhere he stayed the path, because there was no place as calming and familiar to him now as this ashen path.

He rounded the bend as he'd done so many times before. Pokéball ready in hand.

With his hands at his sides the Ranger walked the sunset with a patience that matched the falling ash. He walked to the apex of the path before turning to go back down again. In no rush to be anywhere else he simply enjoyed his time in his favorite personal place in Hoenn.

He couldn't put into words the gloom he felt.

Rumor had it the League's Adventour Excavations had been a big success. A subsequent rumor was that a chosen few of the groups had faced off with then acquired the mythical species of Heatran for their very own. His group had not been one of those chosen, they had even lost a group member down there.

It was hard not to take it all personal; his failings and sacrifices in vain against "Necrozma", letting go of his revenge against Rocket so as to not die or lose Cait, his lack of skill or luck that kept his team from achieving what others had.

It felt like an ocean of inadequacy being poured on one kiloton at a time. Looking around, feeling like he was the only one to lament added isolation to his emotional torture.

Even now, next to a volcano of all things, he punished himself for his shortcomings until he saw something he hadn't this evening expected.

A charizard hovering just beyond the edge of the fiery path. He hadn't seen one since the death of his own before he fled to Hoenn. His original starter pokémon, his first non-human best friend. Raising two charmander and a charmeleon he thought of charizard often enough. Often enough that he couldn't explain the cathartic emotional response of seeing one with his own eyes.

Before he could process why, his eyes welled with tears and his throat swelled with grief. He bottomed out, falling into a sit on the ground.

Sensing no fight in him the Charizard fly away into the sunset.

Somewhere at the bottom of his misery, a flame burned still. He sat and watched the Charizard all but disappear before the burning reached his fingertips. Misery, inadequacy, and grief turned to anger, even rage.

He couldn't stop his tears but he wouldn't surrender to them. Called from his Pokéball Hiei could sense the disturbed state of his master and spread his wings to aid the madness.

Chasing down the Charizard into the setting sun, a sky battle would ensue and by the end of the dragon-dogfight Sénon would claim the Charizard as his own.

Crimsen attempt to capture Charizard!
