thread title from this song
Arno slumped as the walked through the forest, taking consistent swigs of warm coffee from his thermos about every ten steps. It was late winter, but snow clung firmly to the pines he passed by and the lake in the distance was almost certainly frozen. Arno had a distinct... itch to light the last cigarette in his breast pocket, but most of the pack was gone and Arno was admittedly trying to quit. It was weird smoking around his younger peers, and he didn't want to set a bad example... as admittedly cheesy as that sounded.[break]

Salem, Arno's Fennekin, strutted confidently alongside Arno seemingly not at all bothered by the cold. While Arno was bundled up and shivering, Salem walked comfortably with a cocky look on her face. Arno had warmed up, no pun intended, to the small fox Pokemon, but he couldn't help but feel like there was still some work to do in their relationship as trainer and Pokemon. Salem was... overconfident, and seemed to always think that she was the better in every situation, especially in battle. Honestly, Arno thought it might take a loss to really give the little creature some humility but she was an adept fighter, and despite her flaws a good travelling companion.[break]

Arno stared into the PokeTech, reading the news and checking his social media feed-- anything to keep his brain off of the cold. His other eye was looking out for any wild Pokemon that might be of interest. The sky was starting to shift into an amber color and he knew that in an hour or two, it'd probably be time to set up camp. What Arno wasn't thinking about was navigating, and after a few minutes he looked up from his screen and only saw trees. His head swiveled around, and all that surrounded him was trees.[break]

Arno took a deep breath but soon his breathing became faster and faster. Finally, he shouted.[break]

"Where the hell am I?!"

Talk to me, I love that sound,
out of words when you're around

It was...cold and there was something about it that did not sit right with her, that seemed to reach inside of her very soul and shake her to her core. A soft laugh rings through her memory, the way the chillingly gentle hand brushes through her hair, wiping away a warm liquid from her forehead as though it had not just been the one to-'wake up, wake up, it's just a nightmare' but the cold was very real, and it surrounded her on all sides, suffocating. Hadley shivers, tugging her scarf around her neck tighter and tighter until each breath let out of her mouth warms her to some degree. Whatever it was that caused that issue she pushes it to the far reaches of her mind, it wasn't right for her to ruin a perfectly fine day with whatever else might be on her mind. The sun was still up and she would enjoy the moments she had it while it lasted. She shoved her hands in her pockets, her scarf falling down slightly as she took in chilled air with a small smile on her face now. Hadley wouldn't let those nightmares reach her today, even if the cold made her ache in a peculiar way.

Hadley hunched over slightly, trying to shield a bit from the wind blowing in on all sides. But her brown eyes mostly kept a close eye on one of her newest additions to her party, a mischievous little Nickit who seemed to very much enjoy tunneling his way through the snow and trying to seem as sneaky as possible. Most of her current pokemon shied away from the cold, perhaps a weakness she needs to fix one day but it wasn't something she was ever in a rush to do, battling wasn't enjoyable to her, seeing her precious companions in potential danger was very much something she wanted to avoid but being able to keep them all warm during cold times? Hadley smiled despite herself at the idea of them all being comfortable together in even the cold, but it seemed the little fox pokemon was doing just fine in it. Hadley walked past the little mound of snow he was "hiding" in as unsuspectingly as possible and let out a little scream of her absolute, undoubtable surprise when he jumped out to scare her. He cackled in success before he ran off further into the forest with his owner trailing behind him with a fond smile on her face.

Hadley wasn't paying too much attention to the direction she was going, merely that she was dutifully following after the little troublemaker she was now in charge of, letting him enjoy time outside so she didn't really realize that she had gotten so deeply into this route until she noticed the sun slowly setting. She took a shaky breath inward, glancing around at the unfamiliar area but she supposed all areas of Hoenn are like that for her currently, she hasn't been around long enough to memorize this land yet. She clicked her tongue, visibly shivering as she tried to understand the area she had traveled in. She was good at directions, as someone who has done nothing but move around different lands for much of her life it was a skill she had been forced to learn.

The shout made her jump, eyes widening before she leaned down to scoop up her Nickit from another beautifully hidden mound of snow, the fox yelped in protest before grumbling and allowing himself to be held. Hadley moved through the trees, she was pretty close to whoever had yelled. She stopped close by him, carefully setting down her Nickit who was immediately taken with the Fennekin, staring the fire type down before jumping forward excitedly.

"I heard you yell, are you okay?"

There is genuine worry in her voice, and in her steady gaze as her hands wring together. She forgot all about the cold or the setting sun, much more focused on making sure this complete stranger was okay.

Had it always been this cold in Hoenn during this time of the year? You're bound to ask questions like this when you spend your whole life in one place. Your body gets naturally used to it, becoming comfortable over time. Like you're wired one way and a small touch lower than your tolerance just starts to get your skin buzzing. That nagging feeling of a slight discomfort nipping at your nerves just enough. Yes, it's always been this cold in Hoenn, but you've probably never stepped out of your own city to notice it.

This is probably the one thing Jon didn't properly prepare for, having given himself a bit too much credit in the 'starting out' phase. Sometimes you just pat yourself on the back a little too often and make small mistakes that you'll begrudge yourself for in the present. Maybe you'll laugh it off in the future, but right now he really wished he brought a second jacket. Or maybe a hat and a scarf, something that would cover him from the assailing winds and their chilliness. It was impossible to power walk away from them. . .

The young man wasn't really going in any direction but straight after having left his home town, trying to make an express route for Rustboro. Hands firmly gripping the interior of his pants pocket, keeping his arms tight in front of him to hold in as much heat as possible. Feet moving with powerful locomotion, each step meaningfully trying to not slip. Head tilted forward and eyes slightly darted down at the floor, covering the lower half of his face in the sports jacket's collar while watching out for any problems. Aside from make sure he hadn't stepped on a piece of the environment that was too slippery, Jon also had to look out for his rambunctious Tyrogue.

This was the first time they were in a setting that wasn't their backyard, so it was important to be extra careful. Especially with such a young pokemon in his care, one who was beginning to easily outpace him as they kept travelling forward. One who was getting ever so slightly faster with each step he took. One who was now barreling down the road with reckless abandon, having left his trainer behind. Jonathan could even feel himself be stunned for a moment, contemplating the impressive speed before the anxiety set in full force the next second.

That's when he picked up the pace to try to match his now loose Tyrogue, booking it down the same trail as he kept steady vigilance to not trip over any snow. It may not have been the first time that he's run off, but this was certainly a more precarious one. As Jon continued running full speed, he knew he had to find the first pokemon that would cross Champ's path.

Although it was in his nature to run to the first pokemon that he saw, that's not what set him off. Champ was running towards what happened to be the loudest sound in the nearby vicinity with Jon blissfully unaware. A small crises of self-importance usually causes one to ignore those small details. The Tyrogue was beginning to rear up on a couple of humans before examining the area for anything else. There was no interest in things he couldn't possibly throw yet, but there was something that caught his eyes.

While the Nickit nearby lay safely in his trainers arms, protected from his view in her cradling, there was a Fennekin right at the feet of the origin of the sound. It didn't take long before it began to shuffle up and around, trying to get an advantageous position while the two humans began to converse. All useless chatter to him, instead keeping his frame low with his eyes centered on the fox pokemon. Continuing to stagger his movements back and forth, it seemed like he was getting ready to initiate, but also remained cautious of any movements. If anything approached it, Champ would scuttle back; Give him ground and he'll gladly take it. To those unbeknownst, they'd probably not be able to tell he was just acting on natural instincts.

BATTEL
Arno's eyes darted around his surroundings-- he noticed pretty quickly someone had come for him. She was around his age, and seemingly a trainer judging by the other fox Pokemon by her side. Arno's cheeks reddened in embarrassment-- he really needed to get past the habit of yelling whenever there seemed to be any issue. He was lost, sure, but if he had put enough thought into the situation he probably could have done without embarrassing himself in front of other people.[break]

"Sorry, uh-- I'm just a bit lost. Kind of just went in a direction I shouldn't have..."[break]

Arno looked down to see Salem standing her ground for a bit with a growl. With a look, Arno communicated that things were fine, and the Fennekin loosened up. It jumped in excitement with the other fox pokemon and began sniffing it excitedly. It gave a few excited yips as Arno looked up to the woman he had perturbed. She seemed to be about his age, which could be a rarity for trainers. He put his hand forward with a smile for a friendly shake.[break]

"I'm Arno, from Petalburg and this is Salem. Are you a trainer too?"[break]

Arno waited for a response, but heard something in the distance... the distinct sound of footsteps, apparently belonging to someone or something steadily approaching. Salem paused in her revelry and her ears perked up, apparently hearing the same thing Arno did. Both trainer and Pokemon searched for the direction the sound was coming from, only to find a Tyrouge steadily approaching from the southeast. Arno drew a Pokeball, only to notice a human following the Tyrogue, attempting to catch up to it-- probably a trainer. He looked younger than either Arno or the other trainer, and pretty desperate to catch up.[break]

Salem barked annoyedly toward the two before seemingly noticing something else. At roughly the same time, Arno noticed it too-- there was a bird in the sky and a Pokemon with heavier, slower steps approaching from the north. The flying pokemon dived down for an attack, but Salem dodged with flying colors. It was just enough time for Arno to notice what it likely was-- a Mandibuzz. Still, Arno eyed toward the north, interested in the creature that was hiding in the shadow of the forest.[break]

Finally, it revealed itself-- a small blue turtle Pokemon, a Chewtle. While Arno wasn't particularly interested in the Mandibuzz, he looked toward the Chewtle with interest. Maybe the Pokeball he drew would be useful after all...[break]

"This guy looks like a good addition to the team, right?[break]

Salem yipped in agreement as she took a battle stance, letting the Chewtle take the first step.

Talk to me, I love that sound,
out of words when you're around

Hadley grew up in the bustling city, the biggest one in all of Unova and in her travels across the world it still stands out as the largest one with so many people and it was easy to lose yourself in all the moments, the sights, the sounds, the noises. Hadley loved that city, she thrived in the environment where no one could recognize her, where you simply fade into the crowd and become one with so many strangers. It felt like belonging but also it felt as though you were insignificant, she always felt that way though but no one was that way to her, Hadley loved and cared too much about the whole world that she could not stay still, couldn't move as one anymore and broke apart from the only life she knew because she felt what is now a familiar itching inside of her soul. She wanted to escape, to meet others and help them, to feel a connection even if it is only ever one sided. It never mattered to her if someone else didn't care because her heart was large enough, her mind was open enough and she could never ask so much of another person to ask them to want her around.

The man in front of her seems to get red, she is unsure if it is from cold or embarrassment but Hadley finds herself smiling affectionately at him anyway, pleased that he seems perfectly healthy despite the fact that he had yelled out, of course maybe it was a good thing he did since he admitted that he was lost. She glances around the area as if trying to fully examine where they were all while her Nickit was happily trying to play with the other pokemon. His tail was flicking back and forth as if trying to seem fully innocent before the mischievous fox flicked a little harder than before, playfully aiming to spray some snow at the Fennekin's direction, egging her on a little bit.

"I can see why, it's pretty easy to get lost in an unfamiliar land. I used to do the same all the time. I can help if you'd like?"

She offers with a kind if not slightly hesitant tone, she knew that sometimes offered help wasn't always taken very well depending on how proud the other person was but she figured she would offer it anyway. Hadley blinked when his hand was offered to her along with his name, she reaches out and grasps his hand, her slim, cold fingers wrapping around his. Human contact was not something she got often anymore, not since-her mind pushes the thought out of her head because she should not be getting distracted right here. Arno had just been kind enough to offer his name after all, and she realizes she might have been holding his hand a second to long before she pulls away, a little nervous.

"It's nice to meet you Arno, and Salem of course, my name is Hadley, I'm from Unova. This is my little companion for the day, I just got him and haven't really been able to figure out a nickname yet. And I don't think I'd consider myself much of a trainer, I don't battle much, if at all."

Hadley wasn't much for violence of any kind, some of her pokemon were a bit more...spunky than others and were comfortable with fighting but most were content with simply being her constant companions and protectors when needed. It was hard to explain exactly her position in the world, but she traveled to see everything and to help others with her practice. The world she lived in had enough people willing to fight, Hadley was content to patch up those in trouble over being the one that causes pain. Suddenly the peace was broken when a Mandibuzz dived down towards the two smaller pokemon, the Nickit barked and dashed out of the way, causing him to finally notice the Tyrogue, the masked fox's eyes narrowed in suspicion as his fur stood on end, claws sharpening and focus on the new enemy rising.

Hadley eyed the Mandibuzz that was still circling above them, trying to make sure it wouldn't go for any of the pokemon again before allowing Arno to catch the little Chewtle that had also appeared around the same time, she pulled up her scarf again and smiled slightly at his words and not wanting to distract him she turns towards her Nickit who was still in his fighting stance.

"What's wrong-?"

Her words got cut off before the fox darted forward towards the Tyrogue, paws glowing purple and aiming an Assurance at the fighting type sneaking around much to Hadley's horror. Oh no, this is a mess!

Nickit used Hone Claws! (+attack, +accuracy)
Nickit used Assurance!

No matter how bad things were, they could get worse. Probably adventuring rule number one at this point. If not, then you could just replace it with murphy's law by now.

Jon already had enough problems with his Tyrogue running off, he couldn't think about how things could get worse. Thankfully, for him, nature decided to simply show him instead of letting him ponder the possibilities. A very large buzzard-like pokemon had swooped down in an attempt to find its lunch for that day, causing little panic to the two further up. The young man tried to push his legs and move faster, but that wasn't a great option. He managed to slip on the frosted road, a rather awful turn of events for him now.

The teenager could just calm down and think about how there are two other people there, but there was no real certainty that either would do anything about the Mandibuzz that circled over head. Jon's cheek stung a bit from how his face landed on the ground, one of his knees or shins bruised from the collision. It didn't take long for him to get back to his feet, not worrying too much about being wounded at the moment. He had to make sure that another dive wouldn't snatch up his pokemon and fly off with it. Pain was momentary, the bond they had should last forever.

Assuming it didn't end today.

While his trainer continued running right after, Champ was still trying to figure out a way to engage with the other two pokemon that also dodged out of the way of whatever ambushed them. The sudden fly-by caused him to jump back defensively, making sure to land properly while returning his attention to the brightly colored fox. It had stopped playing with the dull, browner one now, beginning to turn its focus onto another wild encounter. It would be the perfect moment for him, had it not been for the Nickit getting in his way. Still hunched in his normal ready position, the Tyrogue made no effort to shuffle away from the oncoming attack.

Before the creature of dark plumage arrived, he had been surveying the two playing canines, no larger than himself. He figured it wouldn't take much to try and latch his arms around one of them for whatever thought he had in his head at the time. The fox pokemon approached with paws drawn, ready to place them upon him and knock him over. Champ was already low to the ground when it came for him, not at all worried about what would happen when it pressed upon him. He shot forward in that moment, aiming to get his shoulder up against its belly as his arms reached around.

The three fingers that the Tyrogue possessed clasped around the back of the Nickit, clamped down by the pokemons palms. He was never concerned with getting hit, expecting to interrupt the attack as he lifted his body now. Likely stretching the hind legs of the brown fox as he rose, there was a slight hesitation now. Champ. . . wasn't entirely sure what his end goal was, having not tossed anything from this position before. Didn't stop him from trying, same as every other attempt he made in his life.

"NO! NO! NO! NO!!" A desperate plea could be heard further down southeast as Jon was soon to arrive to the scene. He really didn't want a bad first impression, especially considering he would already have one for letting his pokemon get out of control. The young man was also adverse to his Tyrogue's compulsion to throw whatever it could get its hands on.

His problem persisted as Champ continued to try to lift the other pokemon over its shoulder, much to the dismay of its trainer. Seems like it got enough of an idea and wasn't deterred by hearing the consistent negative response over and over again. It was just time to practice, even if this wasn't an applicable move in a legal pokemon battle. Lifting the slightly smaller creature was going to make him stronger one way or another, intent on getting it to land on its back. The Tyrogue wobbled its hips from side to side, using momentum for its aims as it went to pick up and fall back. This may not end well if it ended up fidgeting while the scuffle pokemon undertook its endeavor.
