Jonah Ferrara could be accurately described as a mess. These days though, he was incredibly cautious. He'd seen for the first time a human whose power looked like that of a pokemon, and been shaken to his very core and called out for his cowardice. Though anyone bumping into him sent a chill up his spine, he tried to put on a confident face. He radiated the kind of overbearing and even menacing positivity that characterized an Andrew WK song. That boy ain't right.

Unlike his usual attire, he wore a denim-blue and white jumpsuit, with a charcoal-grey mesh trucker hat on. Underneath, there was a plain white tee, of the kind you'd get in a 6 pack at a department store. For the beginning of his shift, he was in the back, unloading the truck with an older man and a Machoke that clearly wasn't his. Some packages were actual chilled raw ingredients for the kitchen, some were shipping pallets of pokeballs, though they'd all be going into the same suspiciously big walk-in freezer.

Approaching the front, he propped open one of the glass front doors, letting the mix of warm sun and cool breeze inform the inside as well as the outside. He turned the placard in the window to say "open", and pushed in what few chairs there were. The middle of the floor was suspiciously bare, but every wall in this 1/3 of the building was packed with leather-upholstered booths and wooden tables. Then there was the counter, and behind it, a kitchen, freezer, closet full of cleaning supplies, and a cramped meeting room.

Slightly wired, he looked through the front door and saw... a g-g-g-g-girl? Awooga, eyes and tongue rolling out of his head, etc. Trying desperately to stay in the moment out of his head, he jogged out front and tried to work up the nerve to talk to Suzume Amemiya . "Hey, there! What are you up to?!" He said, kind of deflating and stalling out. Nonetheless, he had a grin on his face.

What he saw was her good side.[break][break]

Minding her business, perusing the beauty of the locale, savouring the sights, smells and senses of the city. It felt different in a way she couldn't explain- and that included the general populace.[break][break]

Someone bursts out the front door of a restaurant she'd been staring up at. The name was unfamiliar and new, she presumed, and she was distractedly attempting to read it. Of course, that attempt quickly fails the moment the wild-eyed somebody bursts out to startle her. [break][break]

And then she turns the other cheek to face him, giving him full view of the gruesome scar that sullied her beauty. It was a test, one that most men failed. They saw in her a beautiful woman and were almost always surprised and disgusted by her face when they witnessed it fully. [break][break]

She chalked it up to men being pathetic and intimidated, unable to handle a woman who might potentially take them in a fist fight.[break][break]

"Umm.. checking out food joints. You work here?"[break][break]

She gestures half-heartedly to the man's getup.[break][break]

Jonah hadn't paid much attention to the beauty of the city moving around them, in that brief moment of quiet, before she pierced it by speaking up. He'd spent more than enough time out of town, tending to forest fires, and attending to meetings on the submarine. He sort of became more like himself, or atleast he would, after getting his bearings again.

He stood aside, so as to let people in. He looked her in the eye, and again felt the calm of the city moving around them, as if they were large rocks in a stream, in a break in a forest clearing.

He'd seen quite a few boys and girls in his day, sure. But when she turned to face him, exposing the scar running under one eye, he saw a mature woman. Someone who'd lived more of their years more actively than he did, someone whose presence made the 23 year old scooped up from obscurity feel like an overgrown child. He didn't think of her beauty sullied, but rather her strength confirmed. He hadn't seen that many Rockets, but if she were one, she wouldn't be relegated to the kids table with him and Glitch.

Sobering up, he focused on her question. Did he work here. Technically, his job was to staff any Rocket-front business. Any casino where the house always won, any restaurant with a suspiciously big back room, any mining or fishing operation. He paused for a second, then addressed Suzume Amemiya . "Yeah, I just got done unloading the truck. I'll pick up a shift cooking in a minute, but I could go for a smoke right now. Do you want one, too?" He said, kind of deflating and stalling out. One of his chest-pockets bulged a little, in a square shape.

If she was being honest, she hadn't chosen this particular restaurant to stand in front of out of coincidence. She was simply very, very good at looking nonchalant and out of place. Given the building's affiliation with Rocket business, she had been specifically suggested to come here. Said that it'd be a good way to get reacquainted with her peers.[break][break]

Frankly, all she cared about right now was whether or not they served food. The man's pause is not promising, and she glances over her shoulder to deflect her impatience. With a scuff of her heel, however, she's drawn back in while he speaks. Her eyes widen with renewed interest both at the promise of food, and the bulge in his chest pocket.[break][break]

"Well.. since you're offering."[break][break]

It occurs to her only now what time it must be. Perhaps she was still severely jetlagged from arriving in Hoenn that her concept of what time lunch was was still foggy. She doesn't bring it up, but the spine-tingling sensation of mild embarrassment still remains.[break][break]

Suzume approaches him, green eyes swapping from his chest pocket to his face.[break][break]

"Hail Hydreigon."[break][break]

She whispers it like a secret just between them.[break][break]

People moved in and out of the store past him, past the magenta-haired man standing infront of the doorway. She was exceptional at looking both like she was minding her own business, and yet sticking out like a sore thumb.

He stood aside, so as to let people in. He looked her in the eye, and again felt the calm of the city moving around them, as if they were large rocks in a stream, in a break in a forest clearing.

She closed in, and spoke to him. "Well, since you're offering." He nodded, and spoke just loudly enough for passersby to hear, to diffuse any suspicion. "I have a few tamato-berry salads in a cooler, if you don't want to wait for me to start a soup, grill mushrooms, start pasta, or fry up an Octillery."

She then looked back up at his face, and closed the distance between the two. She whispered in his ear in the same way that his bellisima mama or padre severo would lean in to kiss either side of someone's face. "Hail Hydreigon." What the hell was that?? He had to stifle a laugh, before addressing Suzume Amemiya in the same hushed tone. "Team Rocket's blasting off agaiiiiiiin." He said, followed by whistling an ascending note, trying to indicate the opposite of the stock cartoon falling sound. He then stepped back a little, arms folded over his ribs, and started cackling.

Suzume leans back after her delivery, and her flat expression followed immediately by her eye-roll is evidence enough that Rocket's signature catchphrase was an old and tired one. Oh, and cheesy. [break][break]

She'd been hoping that the 'hail hydreigon' would stick, but apparently, it hadn't. Instead, this guy was laughing at her, laughing. As if she were making some funny joke or she'd said something really really stupid. Someway, somehow, Suzu refrains from expressing her disappointment and instead settles on the prospect of food.[break][break]

Everything the man had mentioned sounded good, but she visibly inclined her head at the mention of fried Octillery.[break][break]

"I don't mind waiting for a quality meal. It's been a while."[break][break]

Or at least, it had been a while since she'd had real seafood native to a region. Hoenn was probably famous for it, maybe. Regardless, fried Octillery made her stomach growl in anticipation, and she always went with her gut.[break][break]

As tired as it was, it stuck for a reason. Blasting off again. There's resilience in that. Something to aspire to. Nonetheless, her attempt to breach new ground was admirable, and laughing may have been a bit too much. He gestured to her with a hand held close to his chest, promising if nothing else a reprieve from the sun glaring at the two of them. He pulled down the sleeves of his jumpsuit, tying them around his waist as he slid over the counter like a detective over a car.

Giona went through the walk-in freezer, pulling out a vacuum-sealed pouch of de-veined Octillery arms. Despite sitting in here for quite some time, they maintained their crimson hue. He picked two arms from the pouch of eight, and walked back to the kitchen area.

Setting up, he got out a plate on the counter closest to her. He dug out a frying pan, and splashed it with an olive oil of some sort. He then stood aside at a counter next to the stove, setting down a cutting board and chopping up tamato-berries, as well as lemons. The lemons went right on the plate, the berries went onto the pan and he flipped the burner on. They lost water held in their fibers, sure, but in exchange the fruit gained a nice savory flavor, and even the bronze markings on their skins that anything would have if sauteed. He got a spoon out from a wide keg of tools, just to flip em around, and eventually slide the berries onto the plate without getting all the oil on there.

Next, he set the crimson octopus arms down, and started chopping up a number of onions, as well as onion-adjacent vegetables like scallions and chives. He tossed these vegetables in with the arms, as the searing heat took moisture from the meat. He tossed the arms in the pan, trying to evenly sear the skin as its hue turned bronze, not unlike the fruit already on the plate. The octopus arms curled up and shrank slightly. They'd have a texture even leaner than some cuts of chicken, but ultimately just muscle, ruled by the flavors of the vegetables it was frying with.

He then dumped the entire contents of the frying pan onto the wide, flat plate. Giona ran to the pantry area that took up a wall of the kitchen, fetching a thimble, just the smallest amount, of a hard powder that blurred the line between cheese and salt. He then put the used dishes in the sink and poured a fragrant degreaser over them, and let water fill them.

He set the thimble of cheese (?) on the plate, and brought the plate out to a booth near the door, trying to get the little bit of ambient sunlight to hit the plate. Giona sat down across from the plate set out for her, and steepled his fingers. "There isn't much fat in the meat of that animal, so it's even more important to steep it in the flavor of whatever fruits and vegetables you have on hand."

TL;DR: italian finger kiss emoji. also, experimenting with a font color that may be easier on the eyes, but still technically purple.

Suzume regards him thoughtfully, following not far behind. Her attention slides past his expert approach in clearing the countertop to survey the room. Slowly, carefully, the woman shrugs her own jacket off and sets it along with her purse on a nearby chair. From what she can see, she is the only one around.[break][break]

"Is this place even open?"[break][break]

But all inflection behind that statement fades with the smell of his cooking and the rhythmic sound of his agile hands. She slides into a seat nearby to observe, resting her chin in one hand. Her other hand drums an absent-minded tune on the counter, and she glances up when he speaks.[break][break]

"Mmm.. it smells and looks fantastic."[break][break]

Her stomach growls in anticipation, a noisy, unbecoming sound for the woman. But she seems not at all concerned, and it takes all of her self control to swap her attention from the colourful plate to the young man.[break][break]

"Compliments to the chef, hmm?"[break][break]

Giona dug the braid out from under his trucker hat, letting it hang next to his face. He grinned, watching Ms Amemiya dig in with gratitude. He sat upright in the booth, careful not to either slouch, or lean into the booth. Either would be disastrous for the twenty-three year old's back muscles. He seemed to cool down from the rush of controlling every aspect of the meal, eyes going half-lidded.

"Well, this is my new post for now. I've always been a staffer at Rocket-fronts, but... I used to be in a landscaping company. Y'know, if you're also a grunt, I think I could talk to my uh... well-connected friends about getting you set up here."

He tented his fingers and leaned forward slightly. His elbows drifted down to the table, and Giona gestured with an outstretched thumb to the back. To the 2/3 of the bistro normally off-limits to people. A brow that until now only existed to draw attention to his eye arched, preempting his question. "Do you need something to drink? I have a few sparkling waters and wine coolers in a little chest in the back."

TL;DR: doing the andre steakhouse finger tenting technique.

Suzu, on the other hand, exhibits no sense of poise or back-protecting posture that the young man does. She is slightly bent over her plate, eagerly enjoying the delicious meal. Her attention flicks back up to his tented, patient anticipation, and she pulls herself back up to only slightly awkwardly dap at her lips with a napkin.[break][break]

"Landscaping right into cooking, huh? Interesting pathing, but I can get behind it."[break][break]

But she widens her eyes at his offer. Her first instinct is honestly to decline, but after a moment of hesitation and consideration behind the scenes of her blank expression, she purses her lips.[break][break]

"I'm, uhh.. definitely not good in the kitchen."[break][break]

And there is no way you'd want me on the floor bussing tables.[break][break]

But that thought goes unspoken, given the discomfort behind her pinched expression. What with her ugly scar and natural resting bitch face even when she does smile (thanks, fucked up face), she assumes that her reluctance is a given.[break][break]

Giona gestures behind him and she follows his thumb to the back, glancing back at him quickly.[break][break]

"Just a regular, still water is fine."[break][break]

Frankly, she knew nothing about wines or sparkling waters. [break][break]

Giona nodded, as she turned down his offer. For her to come all this way just to meet someone on the ground... He wouldn't have time to ruminate on what that meant. If she was sent to inspect the place, or not. He stood from his seat and jogged through the door separating front of house from the back.

He returned with a hand pushing the door open. In the other, he held the closed bottle of water, and an opened wine cooler for himself. Thumb in his drink. The faint smell of white wine and pears bubbled to the top, a sweet and bitter soda that was just syrupy enough to go down smooth.

"Well, I'm sure an administrator in the area can find a place for you."

A place for you. For someone who stuck out like a sore thumb. She seemed nice enough. Like she wouldn't cause a stir on the submarine. He had a weak grin, of the sort that didn't reach the skin around his eyes. Giona passed the bottled water to her, and downed a 1/5 of his drink.

He glanced aside at the glass double-doors, and felt relieved that they were closed. That there was a tight seal keeping people outside from knowing of their business. Giona looked back at her, thinking for a moment. He wasn't very bright, she'd be able to see the gears turning in his head. "So! How long have you been around? Like, have you been on the submarine?"

TL;DR: advancing a dumb question, of the sort that a civilian could never hear.
