Zelene grew up in the bustling and heavily populated Goldenrod City of the Johto region. Her parents made for quite the odd couple. Elan Sutton was the Senior Computer Engineer of a large tech company, and he met her mother Zoe at a bar one night after work. The two of them hit it off and he was talked into getting a tattoo at the tattoo parlor she worked at. Zelene's mother was a Tattoo Artist. Elan started dating Zoe and eventually they got married after a year. A year and a half later Zelene was born.

Zelene ended up being an only child because her mother had a condition that put her at risk for ectopic pregnancy and they didn't want to take the risk again. She had a pretty decent childhood, though her father was absent a lot due to work. Her mother's schedule was more flexible and she was able to be home more often. Thanks to her mother's naughty Smeargle assistant by the name of Ollie, Zelene got her first tattoo at the age of twelve. She was a very heavy sleeper and the Smeargle managed to paint two markings on Zelene's forehead with green tattoo dye before anyone could stop him.

When Zelene finally roused from her sleep the resounding scream wakened both of her parents. Ollie was seen running from her room in a her as her parents rushed in to find out what was wrong. Her parents were understandably furious with the Smeargle. Zoe managed to figure out that the Smeargle had just been trying to practice since he assisted her with her tattoo artist job, but she hadn't given him permission to practice on their daughter. Elan was going to book his daughter to get it laser removed, but Zelene shocked her parents by declaring she actually liked it after having had a chance to get a look at it. Elan didn't want to let her keep the tattoo, but her mother gave in and touched it up for her since the edges had been a little uneven.

Zelene got made fun of at school for it at first, and initially Zelene was able to ignore it. It took a far more serious turn later on. There was a girl in one of Zelene's classes who was jealous of her. Considering where Zelene's father worked, he was able to get her a cutting edge cell phone and laptop. Zelene sometimes took them to school with her and Caren wanted those devices too but couldn't afford them. Caren loudly made cutting remarks about Zelene's tattoos and compared her to all kinds of different pokemon.

One day Caren followed her into the girl's bathroom and grabbed Zelene by the head, just as Zelene was at the sink washing her hands. Caren shoved Zelene's head under the running water and scrubbed at her forehead. Zelene turned her head to try and see what was going on and got several mouthfuls of water from the running tap and started coughing. Finally she was able to push Caren away and Caren told her she was only trying to help get the ugly snot off her forehead before running off so she wouldn't get in trouble.

Zelene dried her face off with paper towels but went back to class crying and when he teacher asked why, she just said she didn't feel well. The teacher decided to err on the side of caution and just sent her home for the day. It didn't take long for her mother to get the whole story out of her once she got home. Her mother wasn't the only one who had a pokemon assistant at work. Her father had a pair of Porygon that often helped out with scanning his programming code for errors. He told Zelene to take one of them with her to school and it could record anything that was happening. It wasn't long before the Porygon caught some of Caren's bullying on camera and the video files were emailed to her teacher. The teacher forwarded them to the school principal, and Caren ended up with two weeks of detention. She learned her lesson and stayed well away from Zelene after that.

Ironically the fancy devices that Caren had wanted so badly actually became neglected. Elan officially gave Zelene the Porygon since he only really needed one. The Porygon was incredibly helpful for everything from taking notes, to storing homework files, recording video, and quickly searching up information. She took it with her to most of her classes when she was allowed, and stored it in a pokeball when it wasn't. By the time she made it into high school years later, her father was able to upgrade her Porygon for her through a brief trade back and forth. It evolved into a Porygon2 and became even more helpful....though it also started acting odd. Sometimes it would flash lights during class, and it annoyed her professors enough that she ended up keeping it in a pokeball more often.

Eventually Zelene graduated from high school with above average grades. Her father hoped she might show interest in programming given how attached to the Porygon2 she was, but she had other ideas. She wanted to see what her Porygon2 was capable of and see how it would develop now that it was showing signs of having its own personality, since it had been more like an inanimate object before. She thought it had seemed discontented being cooped up so much in its pokeball. Zelene told her parents she had decided to become a full-fledged trainer. She shocked her parents even more when she announced her plans to go to the Hoenn region, since she wanted to encounter pokemon she had never seen before. That was the excuse she gave, but the whole truth was she realized she had become too dependent on her parents and she wanted to strike out on her own. Her dad was fine with it since the company he worked for had offices in Hoenn and he could always check up on her regularly through the Porygon2. He was able to buy her a plane ticket to Hoenn and that's how Zelene's journey began. [break][break]
