The warm summer sun slowly setting in the evening sky is a beauty to behold, Kim enjoying the sight on Lilycove’s shore as his Kirlia and Gothorita sat to each side, enjoying the chilled sweets from a nearby seaside shop.

“That guy looks suspicious.”

“How?”

“He’s wearing a black hoodie and a face mask on the beach when it’s 91° out.”

“It’s fashion, Anni.”

“Could be a lead though, I can Sync-.”

“He has a Vanillite under the hoodie, they’re having a day out.”

“Oh…”

The mental exchanges continue as the three survey those walking by, awaiting for FERNANDO SILPH to arrive before he continued his investigations any further than he already had.

Whatever leads to rocket Kim could get his hands on as of late were taken with haste, most of them having the man leave empty handed. But something about this recent one has Kim confident he won’t end up the same way; and to ensure his success he needed a bloodhound to sniff out his game.

[attr="class","spiral"]The initial resurgence of Team Rocket meant little to Fernando. Whatever organization that sprouts from their carcass is nothing more than a name without a face. While the others flounder to hunt aimless phantoms, he bides his time on his own endeavors.

To hunt a prey with no fight is not a hunt at all.

Until they take action. The excursion, the glass workshop, the blast that had rendered him and Zac Ramsay out of the fight, the needless deaths of those around them, is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

So he entertains the notion of spending his time picking at the peons, looking for perfect bait for fish worth his time and appetite.

“Kim,” Fernando breaks his taste for surnames out of familiarity and affection. Despite the summer’s sun, Fernando adjust the sleeve to his linen button up, rubbing the butt of his thumb over his Comfey’s head affectionately as it goes back to being his personal bracelet.

“Ferny~” Kim says in a light and kindly tone, adjusting his stance slightly as to turn to the man upon his arrival.

“Let’s trim the fat. I got a lead on some rocket activity in the city. Says they’re operating out of a couple businesses here in Lilycove. I’ve been sanctioned to raid the places that I narrowed my search down to so we’re going to hit them. I plan to be lowkey, no busting down doors and catching people off guard, we’ll walk in, move through the buildings, inspect them for anything that can be connected to rocket activity, and go from there.”

Kim’s efforts are calculated and meticulous in the endeavor to drive out rocket from whatever holes they may be operating out of.

MOMENTS LIKE THESE MAKE UP THE BUBBLES OF FERNANDO’S ADMIRATION. Kim’s ability to codeswitch between a universally beloved clown and a councilman of distinction happens on the fly. At first, such a leap would give him whiplash, but now he knows better. All he can do is buckle up.

“Sounds good,” Fernando answers, effectively trimming the fat of their conversation.

The fact that this operation requires nuance spells good for his expertise. Ever since the bomb in Fallabor, Fernando’s made a slow shift to prepare for small-scale, urban combat. Avatar be damned, his days in Slateport, during the invasion, were his peak in terms of combat.

“I’ll follow your lead. How big is our search radius?”

He smiles and brushes away the joke with a quick whoosh of his hand.

“They’re spread out, just dots on the map of Lilycove; a smart move given how easy it would be to pinpoint them if they were clumped together.”

Amber eyes avert to the Kirlia, the pokemon finishing her treat timely and looking back to her trainer expectantly.

“The nearest to us is a block away, but from there on out we’re teleporting. Your body familiar with it?”

A quick wave is given for him to follow, the path before them not long but enough for a bit more chitter between them.

"TCH," Fernando clicks his tongue in disgust. "It's only the third most used move in the region."

The news doesn't surprise him. Any congregation too large would have already been busted. While Rocket activity slowly comes to a spike it's not as if the League has only sat on their hands. It's an everlasting game of tug-of-war where as the League cracks down Team Rocket learns to become more cunning lest they get caught up. Constant evolution, as he envisioned.

"We'll have to be quick. TELEPORT is fast but word of mouth travels faster."

A slightly smug smile sits on his lips, head tilting up just slightly as he nods in concurrence.

“Then you don’t have to get yourself ready for what’ll eventually happen.”

As they near their first destination: a niche flower shop, Kim offers a shrug at his peers' words, the same smile plastered on his face.

“Which is exactly why Bella is here.” He gestures towards the Gothorita. “I’m sure you’re familiar with magic room to a degree already, right?”

Kim does the honors of holding the door open for the four of them allowing everyone to enter before he did; the councilman flipping the open sign to closed as he entered himself.

“Hello~” Kim says to the person at the counter in a fluttery tone, sliding the sanction for this specific location over the desk. “This is a raid~”

In an instant, the shop is locked down, the building encapsulated in an invisible box now entirely cut off from the outside world.

“Two story building, no basement. Downstairs is the shop and there's a small storage room behind the wall behind the desk. 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms upstairs. Look around thoroughly, Fernando, and if you find anything incriminating, shout out to me and we’ll have backup here to sweep up behind us. I’ve got downstairs covered, you get upstairs.”

The councilman slips on a pair of gloves as he moves through the shop, checking over and under every nook and cranny he can before moving onto the next.

MAGIC ROOM IS A MOVE UNDERAPPRECIATED. Seeing Kim opt for something that isn’t one the front page of every battle book lights Fernando’s expectations with high hopes–dashed the moment the setting changes.

Their window of time is small. No matter what Kim says, Fernando needs to operate under the worst case scenario. When they enter, Fernando immediately dismisses their concerns with a wave of his hand. Their mugs should be familiar enough, even without Kim’s announcement.

He immediately dislodges his Pokeball to release his trusted Kecleon. It fades with its COLOR CHANGE, a mere speck in the backdrop as Fernando snoops around. Unfortunately, he proves the unlucky between the duo, unable to find anything of note as he sifts through each room.

Kim’s eyes quickly sift through each nook and cranny, hands spacing cramped areas to better view them for any sort of incrimination.

But when all was said and done, he could come up empty handed.

“Clear.”

He announces, awaiting Fernando to regroup before Kim clears the Magic Room and promptly teleports them to their next destination: the middle of a bustling coffee shop’s dining room.

Kim forgoes the previous song and dance to get right down to businesses, the simple phrasing of, “This is a raid.” enough to bring those present to a standstill; the Gothorita once more isolating the shop off from the world around.

“Stick with me, Fernando, it’s a small shop, no need to split. Ana, escort the civilians to one side of the shop. Starfish, give her a hand.”

With his orders given, Kim moves through the shop, expecting Fernando to follow; the Kirlia nudging those present out of their seats and towards another seating area with the mental persuasion of psychic. And for those that choose not to budge, a shadow slinks across the ground, a Gengar placing them under a Hypnosis and commanding them to move by force.

Sticking close to Fernando, Kim speaks under his breath.

“At the very least, magic room will cut us off from the outside while we’re here, but even if we come up empty handed in one place that doesn’t mean they still aren’t affiliated with rocket. We have to be as fast as possible.”

Kim’s eyes scan the vicinity as they walk through, eyeing the workers and their movements as well as their stations, hoping to find some hint of rocket within the facility.

“We have one more places I want to check after this one but stay sharp while we’re here.”

LIFE IS FRAUGHT WITH FAILURES. Fernando is no stranger to the bitter emancipation of victory. It leaves his tongue, bittersweet with an arid dryness that leaves his throat scratchy. But it is an experience he has lived his entire life through. Pressure mounts but never concaves.

“Affirmative,” he answers between slotted eye lids. He attempts a half-hearted smile to reaffirm the worries of every worker they scrutinize but the mission comes first. Always the objective.

So far, nothing amiss, but that just means their scope narrows down.

The thought crosses him mind—what if they’re too late—but he knows better than to dwell on the unforeseen.

Fernando scoffs to himself as he turns to Kim.

“Clear.”

“Clear.”

There is a disheartened tone that accompanies the singular word uttered, Kim’s expression bordering both rest and worry.

While it puts the mind at ease knowing these shops had not fallen in line with Kim’s speculations, it also unsettles the one who speculates; Kim’s mind still racing with thoughts of self doubt and second guesses that fall in line just as quickly as his assuredness did.

As they make their way back to the entrance, Kim is quick to tilt his head town slightly, apologizing to those caught in the wake of his briefness.

“Sorry for the disruption, folks. Your orders are on me for the rest of the day, keep a tab handy for me, please and thank you.”

With a clap of his hands, Kim wraps up, each of his pokemon returning to his side before teleporting to their final destination.

In a blink, they stand in the middle of an empty hotel lobby. It’s silent, and a quick gaze around would only put one more on their toes.

A hotel: acclaimed by most if not all who had walked in through its doors as a warm and inviting stay with attendants waiting at your beck and call was now empty, a dark void seen clearly out from the once renowned gold lined glass entrance doors.

While his eyes slowly scan the surroundings, Kim speaks over to his partner.

“I think… we might have just been caught in a trap…”

The lights gently dim as the vibrancy of a hallway’s lights shine much brighter, a nonverbal ushering sent their way.

“Do you wanna fall into the bait or find our own way? Either way, I think we’re gonna get fucked over.”

Kim’s demeanor remains calm despite the precarious situation they found themselves in.

“NEVER BETTER.”

Fernando seems unfazed by the sudden distortion. Being caught in a trap, while ominous, spells a better end than barging into several places only to come out empty handed. But that’s only because there’s no sense of danger. He still believes himself to be in control.

“I follow your lead,” he answers with a cheeky curtness.

Fernando’s MISTY TERRAIN starts to bleed around his ankles, pooling at his feet. Over time, he’s gotten used to controlling the limber wisp. It coils around him like another appendage, leaving him armed with two surprises for when the time comes.

“Unless you want to just tear the whole building down.”
