Stomach freshly-stuffed with the most nutritious fast-food burger and fries he could get, Hideo was ready for his next match of the Hoenn Star Tournament. His opponent this time was...Balder Schwartz .

...

He'd heard about this guy before. A bodyguard to someone famous, apparently. Meant he wasn't going to be an easy battle. Hideo made sure to bring a tough Pokemon for this fight: his Ferrothorn, who he let out the moment he was in the arena.

Floating around Hideo was the becoming-more-helpful-as-this-went-on yellow Rotomdex, staring at Hideo's opponent. "I'm feeling like this is gonna be a tough one, Hideo," it commented.

But that didn't deter Hideo, who was ready for a tough fight.

"You got that right, little Pokedex." A man said as he walked in from behind, passing the floating Rotomdex and his owner. The black coat was floating behind him, hooked on his shoulder someone. Why was the man dressed up like a bodyguard while at the beach?[break][break]

"Nice to see kids like you taking part in this event. But sadly, and as a form of respect, I can't hold back too much." On that note, the man pulled out a pokeball. One of a fiery red color with golden alolan markings upon it. "Let's go Ash." The odd Pokeball opened, revealing a Typhlosion, slightly bigger and darker then the regular creature.[break][break]

"I'll let you take the first move Kid." Only fair to do so, since the child arrived on the field before him. But that would be the first time the Bodyguard would see how a blind individual fights their battle. It was bound to be an interesting match.

Hideo cocked his head to the side, a little surprised to learn he was the first one here. He couldn’t resist grinning when the man said he wouldn’t hold back. “I hoped you wouldn’t,” Hideo said.

Once the man let out his Pokemon, the Rotomdex immediately began scanning her. “He’s using a Typhlosion...she’s pure fire, Hideo. She’s a horrible matchup for Spiker.”

“Well, not like I expected this to be easy,” Hideo muttered to himself. Maybe he should’ve waited for Balder to choose a Pokemon first before he made his own choice, but it was too late now. He’d work with what he had. “She better at close range or long range?”

“She’s got a mix of everything; Eruption, Lava Plume, Quick Attack, Swift, and Burn Up. She’s also got Smokescreen.” Hideo frowned; no notable weaknesses, and almost all of those were really strong attacks. He’d have to stick to Spiker’s own strengths here.

Even better that Balder gave him the first move. “Alright then...Spiker, get up close!”

The Ferrothorn wrapped its tentacles around its body - and she began to spin fast, belying his massive body. As her body glowed bright from the Gyro Ball, she spun straight towards the Typhlosion, aiming to crash right into her.

The Typhlosion specie was known as one of the fastest within the fire species, equaling the speed of the more widely-spread Charizard. Thus, dodging an attack from a slow creature like Ferrothorn, it should be easy, right? Sadly, being bulkier and taller than its others species-mate, Ash was also slower.[break][break]

Plus... it wasn't her style to back down from a challenge. As the metal creature was spinning and charging in, the volcano pokemon instead lunged forward, using its claws to try and grab the Ferrothorn and keep it in place. Balder sighed as he saw his pokemon act, but that was fine. The idea wasn't bad, but it was reckless, as was tradition from it.[break][break]

Tanking the damage dealt by the Gyro Ball, the Typhlosion's flames on its back began to shine brighter and stronger. An attack was coming. "Kid, it was a bold move to go up close and personal. Especially since your flying tool gave you a run-through of my pokemon's moves. But in a battle, in a war, it's not just the moves that do a difference: it's how they are applied. How far you and your pokemon are willing to go. Melt it away, Ash."[break][break]

The Typhlosion's maw opened, releasing an intense heat and light before a surge of Lava Plume gushed out to attempt to drown the Ferrothorn and deal as much damage as possible. The usage of Eruption could've been a better option, if Gyro Ball hadn't dealt its fair share of damage to the bipedal creature.[break]

"The Typhlosion caught Spiker..." the Rotomdex stated, the disappointment obvious in his voice. Guess this opponent was even stronger than he'd expected.

Even worse, Hideo could hear that Lava Plume hit his Ferrothorn point-blank. She shouted out in pain, though fortunately, she was still standing at the end of it, but her body was looking pretty burnt afterwards.

As for Balder's words, Hideo nodded. Up close was Spiker's strength, between the Iron Barbs along her body and her own attacks. As long as she held this distance, she could put up a good fight. Maybe even win. But pure power wasn't going to win this.

"Yeah, I get that. When the odds are stacked against you, you gotta go hard and get creative. So...Spiker, Grab'n'Go!"

She attempted to catch the Typhlosion between two massive metallic discs, the best she could do to get a grip on his opponent.

And after that?

Whether or not she'd caught his opponent, she'd once again start to glow, once again spinning as she went for another Gyro Ball. And this time, she was aiming to send her opponent right into the ground - repeatedly if possible.

Ferrothorn tried to grab the Typhlosion, then used Gyro Ball to try and pound said Typhlosion into the ground.

Iron Barbs... A detail that hadn't escaped the man's eye. And definitely not the Typhlosion's hands as the spikes were poking at her. After unleashing the Lava Plume, the fire-type released her hold on the steel creature, backing away quickly. "Take your time and recharge Ash. Don't be rash."[break][break]

A clear order of what she should do. And he knew she could get hot-headed. Thus, she knew what she should do. The flames on her back and head suddenly went silent, non-apparent. But instead, a pitch black Smokescreen emerged from the pores on her back, covering the battle scene as she dropped on all fours.[break][break]

Using the smoke as a cover, she proceeded to move out of the way of the Gyro Ball. Surely with its movements, it would disperse the smoke so Ash made sure to get some distance between them as well, preparing to counter attack soon.

Spiker made her attack...but the Typhlosion slipped away in the cover of smoke. She rolled through, hitting nothing, only stopping once she realized such. By the time the smoke was starting to disperse, she’d seen how far her opponent had gotten from her. Not good.

Hideo’s Rotomdex relayed the situation to him - and he wasn’t happy to hear it. They had to get back in range fast, before Spiker got sniped to oblivion. “Back back in there, Spiker!” he shouted, “And show’em you can fight at range too!”

Spiker would approach the Typhlosion. But rather than roll her way in, she was “walking” with her massive tentacles - and along the way, she began to fire Pin Missiles from her mouth, more to break the Typhlosion’s concentration than to damage them; neither she nor Hideo were under the illusion that this was going to hurt their opponent much.

It would have to do for now.

The blind one was showing good diversity of strategies and had good judgement for the actions used on the battlefield. His handicap wasn't much of one in this setting, luckily for him. It's a good thing it wasn't a war field, like Hoenn had a couple of months ago.[break][break]

As the Smokescreen dissipated, the Ferrothorn was now resuming the assault, attempting to close in while shooting Pin Missiles from above. But the Typhlosion was ready to receive it all. "UNLEASH IT ALL, ASH!" Taking a deep breath, the creature reared its head back to allow for more air to enter his body.[break][break]

Once the charging was complete, the Typhlosion released it all in one fell swoop, Burning Up all of his flames as they gushed out of his maw to travel towards the Ferrothorn, hopefully burning the Pin Missile at the same time.

Even with the situation weighed so heavily against him, Hideo was giving it his all. And his Pokemon gave no less, trying her hardest.

She was not deterred by her Pin Missiles burning up to the Typhlosion’s Burn Up, even as it rapidly approached her. She enhanced herself with an Iron Defense, but it didn't do much to deter the flames, she didn’t stop scream came from her as the fire scorched her body, the flames sticking to her body even as the attack itself ended.

And she was still going, powering through the pain.

She didn’t even wait for an order from her trainer; the moment she got close enough, she’d go in for a Metal Claw, intending to crush the Typhlosion with the metal end of one of her tendrils.

It seems like the metal pod was as stubborn as the master. A last minute iron defense, followed by a counter attack with metal claw. Seems like the kids of this generation really had some backbone to them. First, the kid from the war ( Andy Blackadder ) and now this one, Hideo. Hoenn might have a nice future after all.[break][break]

Assuming it survives the future cataclysms, and rocket. "You definitely have potential, Hideo Kino. With more practice and experience, you might even become a force to be reckoned with. But for today... I'll sadly snatch this win."[break][break]

Even though the flames of the Typhlosion were gone, it didn't mean they were powerless. Thus, as the Metal Claws struck her, Ash the Typhlosion retaliated almost immediately, unleashing a shower of stars from her chest at point blank to the Ferrothorn.

As tough as she was, even Spiker had her limits. One could only take so many fire attacks to the face in a row and be lit on fire before her tendrils became wobbly on her advance. But she still powered through, even managing to get her Metal Claw in.

Ironic, then, that the one non-fire attack his opponent used - one that Spiker's metallic body even resisted - was the straw that broke her back (metaphorically speaking). Those Swift stars just seemed to deplete what little strength she had left, and she hit the ground with an unceremonious *thud*.

Hideo sighed, but still smiled. It was a loss that pretty much everyone here foresaw, but Spiker did well despite the unfavorable matchup. "I plan to~" Hideo said, drawing his Ferrothorn back into her ball. "Even if I lost this battle, I don't plan to stop here."

He had more matches today, after all. But that also was in the sense that he was going to keep getting better, getting stronger until he could rise to the top. "After all, I'm planning to be Champion someday!"

His mind flashed back to the discussion he had with Andy Blackadder earlier. Freedom was going to be his first step towards that.

The Ferrothorn was now defeated. By the one attack it was resistant to. That almost felt... Anti-climatic in a way. But after all of this assault, it was understandable for it to collapse. The Typhlosion roared in victory before suddenly losing its footing. It caught itself back up, but it seems like the damage of the battle was now catching up.[break][break]

Balder called the creature back and advanced towards the blind kid. "A worthy goal, endeavor even. Maybe you'd be able to trash kyle lopez easily in a fight, given more training and the appropriate team for it." The man gently patted the head of the blind kid and looked at the rotom-dex. [break][break]

"How many badges do you have collected so far?"

The match was over, but that didn’t mean he didn’t have some time to talk with his opponent - he had a while until his next match.

Hideo grinned, getting support for his eventual battle against the current Champion, kyle lopez . “I plan on it!” he said. “It may take some time ‘till I get enough badges to challenge him, but I’m sure you’re talking to the future Champion of Hoenn right now!” And patting the head of the future Champion - seemed Hideo had the habit of getting those.

As for his actual progress towards doing that?

“Just one so far. The Honor Badge, over at the Mauville Gym. It’s run by Dou-“ Wait, no, he shouldn’t be so informal around someone like Balder. “uh, Mr. Sullivan.”

Wait, no, he had a rank. “Sorry, I mean Liutenant Sullivan. He had a non-traditional challenge where I had to sneak around a base and ‘assassinate’ a guy. Not a real assassination mind you - I just had my Grapploct hit him with ink.”

He could recall trying to explain all this to Razz Kingsman . “It was meant to test our ability to make judgements on the fly. My attempt wasn’t perfect-” He did get distracted going after nothing, and his attempt to distract some guards almost caused a car crash. ”-but I did well enough and made the right decisions. So that’s how I got the badge.”

But once he finished his explanation, there was a sigh. “Doug - I mean, Lieutenant Sullivan - told me I could get another badge if I was able to challenge a gym leader in this tournament...but I didn’t get any luck setting up a match. So I guess any other badges, I’ll have to get the good-old fashioned way.”

But he didn’t actually feel too bad about that; earning badges meant proving he was an exceptional trainer. Getting them from winning a one-off tournament just wouldn’t feel the same to him.

"How about you? How many badges do you have?"

The Honor Badge... A badge he had never heard of. But the test that Hideo described... That was worrisome. Why would there be an assassination objective for a Gym Challenge? That sounded like a Rocket training in disguise, if anything. Hell, why would you expose kids to this form of challenge? Something to bring up to Dahlia it seems.[break][break]

"Just one huh... Well, with the prowess you've shown today, I'd wager you'd be able to get a few more already. Here." Balder grabbed something from his pocket and placed it in the kid's hand. "Totem Badge. It's not worth anything anymore, but back when I was a gym leader, it was the Badge I owned. While it gives you no benefit, it does show that you have my support, which few have."[break][break]

Then, the blind child asked what badge the Bodyguard had accumulated. "Hmmm... Officially, 2 badges. Something I'm slowly working on. But as you've felt, the amount of badges are not representative of one's strength. It's possible for someone with no badge to be stronger then the official Champion."
