Sootopolis had changed. Some things for the better, or course. There were more shoe stores, more expensive restaurants selling foreign food, and more beach shacks selling summer polos and cheap drinks.

Sinnoh may be the home of Arceus, but it was no place to spend the summer. Somehow the idea of a beach party hadn't made it that far north yet.

Bill had travelled four continents in the years since his disappearance, and he could confidently say that there was still no place like Sootopolis for comfort and summer weather.

It was home, and he was finally back.

Overhead, postal Pelippers and other, swifter messenger birds flew between the houses. As Bill watched, a massive Corviknight took flight from the upper rim of Alta Vista, swooping down to almost dip its cargo in the central lake before pulling up and landing halfway up the far side of the crater.

Bill let out a breath, and gently pulled in another. It was a gorgeous day in Sootopolis. Now where did that old ice cream place get to?

Bill walked into the old ice cream place. It had changed a lot in the last decade. Expanded a little, and the woman behind the counter looked...younger. "Miss Rozale?" Bill asked, and she turned. "You look just like your mother," he said. It wasn't quite true. The teenager's hair was substantially blonder than her mother's. Much lighter than her father's had been too.

Bill and the girl talked for a while. Her mother was still running the shop, at least in name, but the daughter was the face. A beautiful face too.

He left, wandering down side streets and alleys, all as familiar as the veins on the back of his wife's hands.

It was the hour of fading light, and he found himself, quite by design, in the park. There was another creature there. Not a human, but also not a machine. It beeped softly, its cry unabrasive and almost familiar, like a default notification tone on a foreign phone.

Bill took the alien back home , to the heights of Sootopolis.
